2 weeks with no word from the GM...

Male, Dwarven Storm Druid: 1 | Hp: 14 /14 | AC:18 T:12 FF:16 | CMD: 14 | Fort:+3 ,Ref:+2 ,Will:+6 ,(+1 will vs god, -1 vs shamans) | Init:+2 | Perc:+8

Barrack moves into the first floor with the others keeping his shield at the ready. As Sobrian begins advancing up the stairs, Barrack positions himself at the base of the stairwell.

Barrack steps up next to Torrent in a display of solidarity with her.

Whether it's a trap or not matters little. We need to investigate the tower. Whether it's to find the gnome, recover the intelligence, or to simply learn more about our opposition.

With that the dwarf hefts his shield and starts moving towards the door.

As the group had been moving through the city Barrack had taken the time to evaluate his allies and their actions. In the end he found himself worried by their lack of pragmatism. Sometimes you had to make sacrifices for the greater good. While he was impressed by their abilities and understood their desire to protect their home he also knew that sometimes you had to make the difficult choice of accepting you can't save everyone. For the most part the dwarf simply stayed in the background and watched for more direct threats. But seeing the elven magician run into a blazing fire to save a wardrobe that would most likely get looted tonight drove him to speak.

The invasion is here and we need to make a choice. Do we stay here playing hero trying to save people's clothing from fires or do we get on with this mission? Because every time we stop for these heroics we make it less likely that we'll be able to save the whole city. I commend your respect for life... But with us leaving the city, we have to accept that allot of people will die tonight, and we have a bigger task at hand. So for the love of your home I ask that we try to keep a lower profile before we really do draw the attention of something we can't handle. If we really do manage to piss off one of those wyverns we'll most likely all die and everything we are trying to accomplish will fail.

Having finished his little tirade the dwarf looks at his fellow travellers to see if any of the direness of the situation has sunk in.

Seeing Torrent and some of the others head upstairs Barrack curses under his breath and starts following the others.

Seriously? We don’t have time to put out every fire in the city! These fires make a great distraction for our mission tonight!

Upon reaching the room with the fires Barrack starts repeatedly casting Create Water in an attempt to safe guard the lives of the others, continuously muttering under his breath.

Hearing the strange noises Barrack Stares at the ceiling in wonderment.

WHAT IN BLAZES WAS THAT!

Then turning to see his allies begin the process of leaving he follows Rose out the door clearing the way for the guards to enter.

Aye you better get your men out of there fast, before the whole place goes up in flames.

Male, Dwarven Storm Druid: 1 | Hp: 14 /14 | AC:18 T:12 FF:16 | CMD: 14 | Fort:+3 ,Ref:+2 ,Will:+6 ,(+1 will vs god, -1 vs shamans) | Init:+2 | Perc:+8

Yep... not much battle prep I can do... and it seems a bad idea to stick my nose out too far...

Barrack looks up at Sobrian on the other side of the door way and gives a nod. The bulky dwarf does a surpisingly good job of preparing to jump their company, pressed against the wall to remain unseen by anyone entering the room.

. My apologies if I wasn’t clear. I had intended for Barrack to be supporting Sobrian at the stairs. Figured with one of us on both sides of the doorway we could be flanking buddies.

Drawing his axe and sword Barrack readies a strike for the first hostile to come through the door.

During the discussions Barrack has been standing behind the bar quietly listening as he nursed his drink. Not really sure of his new companions he quietly accepted the coins.

Well I guess I'm involved now,

perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25

Between the sound and his new allies quick responses it was more than obvious something was about to go down. The burly dwarf quickly crossed to the door opposite Sobrian in a surprisingly surreptitious manner.

stealth: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (18) - 1 = 17

Barrack drinks finishes his third cup of ale while Torrent explains the situation. When Kiana makes her suggestion Barrack purses his lips and thinks.

. Seems to me that plan would leave us a little vulnerable. Flying one or two of us would be no problem, but this big company would require enough trips that it's all most guaranteed you would be seen eventually. Not to mention that who ever goes first and last would be left all by themselves at one point. Seems to me picking us off one at a time when we're vulnerable, is what the guards are best at.

With that Barrack turns to Torrent.

Getting out of the city is something that I would definitely be interested in. But how do we know that with these mages of yours were not just trading one occupying army for another...

With that the dwarf gets up and heads towards the keg to refills his mug while waiting for an answer.

gm:
. Barrack looks at the sign and his heart starts thudding.

What if the inn is being watched right now!

The dwarf stares at the sign his mind rushing... then he gets an idea.

Well Blast it... they had the only decent dark ale in the city!

Hopefully the loud declaration would serve to mask his real reason for being here, at least a little. With that the dwarf walks towards a nearby alley and faces the wall to relieve himself. It was just a tactic to buy some time while he surveyed the situation for signs of ally or for,and thought of a better plan.

gm:
Barrack prolly made a point of entering the city gates around dusk. He was figuring any day laborers from the city who had business outside the city walls would be coming home around then. So hopefully he could just blend in with the crowd.

GM:
The Dwarf sedately moved through the town doing his best to keep a low profile. The truth was he had no idea how to do that but for the most part to him it meant look like you had some place to be and not look anyone in the eyes. He felt uncomfortable and was worried it showed.

Barrack generally tried to stay out of the city as much as he could. The streets were tighter than he really cared for reminding him of the underground caverns of his youth. Not to mention the smells. Not five minutes ago he had passed a man relieving himself in an ally. The dwarf had of course dutifully ignored the man wondering if he were drunk or just a homeless vagrant. He so wished to be in the mountains looking down on the city. The air was cleaner, and the only sound was the wind through the trees.

But it was necessity that drove him into the city. He needed to regain contact with the resistance. It was either that or hide out in the mountains and wait for all this to blow over. He had almost chosen to do that... but in the end it was a combination of anger at the imprisonment of his friends and the annoyance at what the arrival of the armies would do to his wild home that compelled him tonight.

He figured 20 more minutes and he should be at the "Poison Apple". Hopefully he wouldn't be stopped along the way by guards. Hopefully Torrent would be there tonight. Hopefully there would be something he could do to help his imprisoned allies. Hopefully the Poisoned Apple would have some proper Dwarven ale and not just the weak brews that the humans seemed to drink by the bucketful.

Only time would answer all his questions. For now all he could do was keep his eyes forward and look like he had someplace he had to be.

Of the PCs, that basically means Saltstone is likely the only person she might have traded more than single syllable conversations with.

Must have been a fun first meeting. I can just see Barrack wondering what in the world is that flying bird with the table, and why does it seem to keep flying back and forth. He prolly did his best to avoid her the first time but made a point of asking some of the locals who are a little more up on local gossip if they knew anything. Once he found out she was new to the city and was generally rude to most folks he would most likely have made a point of making a peace offering to her the next time he saw her. Might help out if we have that relationship established.

The other PC I think Barrack would have made a connection with was Beauregarde. A little drink that reminded him of the home he left behind would be something that Barrack would be interested in, not to mention Barrack would most likely be happy to forage particular ingredients for the Brewer (wild mushrooms etc...).

P.S. I think Our Dwarven Alchemist is the only player not to have checked in yet.

Thankyou for the invite. Looking forward to playing with everyone and seeing how we come together as a group.

I like the background. Did Barrack take the alternate racial ability Surface Survivalist? ("Some dwarves have dwelt so long above ground they have lost their ability to see at night. However, their adaptation to extreme environments allows them to treat wind conditions (when determining whether or not they are checked or blown away) and either hot or cold climates (choose one) as one step less severe. This racial trait replaces darkvision.")

It seems like it'd fit your character's background, and druidic status quite well.

Thanks... I like the character allot and was pretty excited to see another WOTBS game.

I think this was the first character that took optional race traits with and I may have gone a little overboard. I took a bunch of different ones that I felt helped flush out the character including Surface Survivalist, Mountaineer, and Rock stepper.

My personal playstyle has always been more of a storyteller... let the story shape and drive character development instead of forcing the story to fit my given character. But I have a few ideas of where he's going to go...

Socially:
Barrack is pretty gruff guy who has chosen seclusion for himself for a long time... and honestly he's gotten to a point where he wouldn't mind a little company for a change. To me his story is more about what kind of friendships he might make with the other pc's and his inner turmoil about wanting to help and be around other people but still not really wanting to be around people.

Mechanically:
He's learned to rely on his physical sturdiness and will start out as a front liner. As time goes by he'll shift in to a caster role. At some point in the future you can count on him transforming into a sparrow and hiding in a tree while dropping lightning bolts from the sky.

family:
I have no idea what an encounter with anyone from his family would be like. He kind of split the first time he had a chance and hasn't been home since. It's not the most dwarven way of living and it could be an interesting scene to encounter a brother, cousin, or maybe even eventually have to stop off where he grew up. Not sure where the story leads to or what kind of chances for this there could be but it would be a fun encounter to see.

The winds of change are blowing over the mountains. A storm is coming and there is nothing that Barrack likes more than a good storm.

I would like to submit Barrack Saltstone. He's a character I made for another Burning Sky campaign where the GM disappeared before we finished the first scene. I went ahead and touched him up so he would be more in line with your build rules.

He is a Dwarven Storm Druid with ties to the resistance thanks to the small community of trappers, hunters and mountaineers that call the local mountains home. His attitude towards religion is that the Gods are far away but Spirits are close. He'll constantly be in touch with the spirits and asking their guidance.

Background:
As a young dwarf Barrack was miserable. He had weaker eyes that required more light than other dwarves and suffered terribly from an everlasting depression. What's more is he was sensetive to the voices of long past ancestors. He could hear the influence of spirits, and would often stare off at things others couldn't see. His parents thought him sickly and debated for a long time what to do with him. It was decided that he would stay home where it was safe...and dark. For years he lingered in the dark damp caves of his people always feeling like something was missing...

When he was a mere 20 Barracks great uncle passed away and it was decided Barrack would be allowed to leave the family hold for the first time in his life. This would involve a journey to another dwarven city and a quick passage above ground. This short time above ground changed Barracks life. As soon as he was above ground he felt like he could breathe, not to mention see. The cold crisp air breathed a life into the young dwarf that his family had never seen before. He had never imagined a sight so beautiful as the golden sun floating above silver clouds in an azure blue sky. The wind blowing across his brow was not the smoke laden dank air he had grown up with . It was clear and crisp and spoke of places far away. Barrack knew in that moment that what he desired more than anything was to live outside in the open air.

AS soon as he reached the age of Adulthood Barrack left home never planning on returning. He left for the mountains where the air is clear and crisp, and the only sound in his ears is that of the voices carried on the wind. In time he came to call the mountains outside of Gate Pass home, and occasionally would stop in the city looking to trade... and perhaps make the occasional contact with another human.

When he had heard the news of possible war, from a local trapper, Barrack knew better then to ignore what he heard. The last thing he wanted was entire armies camping in the foot hills and doing who knows what to the wilds in the area. He would be glad to see neither the Ragesians or Shahalesti anywhere near the mountains he calls home.

For this reason the dwarf has left his home in the mountains to come and see how much truth there is to the rumors.

Barrack looks up at the ceiling... And cocks his head as if listening to someone whispering in his ear.

It would seem we have visitors. Guess we better get ready for them.

Move action ===> finishes his drink as he stands up
Move action ===> straps on his shield

I am the last hero in initiative and go right before the enemies.

Setting the city, we want to protect, on fire seems a bit counter productive. If we use fire as a distraction it will need to be VERY controlled.

Do any of you know anything about Erdan Menash... I don't know much about him but I have heard that he's sympathetic to causes like ours... Maybe he would be able to give us a writ to get out of the city...

Male, Dwarven Storm Druid: 1 | Hp: 14 /14 | AC:18 T:12 FF:16 | CMD: 14 | Fort:+3 ,Ref:+2 ,Will:+6 ,(+1 will vs god, -1 vs shamans) | Init:+2 | Perc:+8

I always prefer more players so that if someone drops or goes on vacation things don't just break down.

Male, Dwarven Storm Druid: 1 | Hp: 14 /14 | AC:18 T:12 FF:16 | CMD: 14 | Fort:+3 ,Ref:+2 ,Will:+6 ,(+1 will vs god, -1 vs shamans) | Init:+2 | Perc:+8

So we need to get out of town without drawing too much attention to ourselves... All the gates are barred... Either we go over the wall, under the wall, through the wall or around the wall. We can do so stealthily, fight our way through, trick our way through, possibly bribe the right person, use a diversion, or any combination of all those. The disguise is an interesting idea... But someone would still have to talk us through the checkpoints. What other ideas do people have?

Knowledge local: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13 see if Barrack knows of any breaks in the wall or if their is some sort of sewer outlet outside the city or if he knows any of he guards.

muttering quietly to himself... Orc Skull ram... Damn fancy name for a log if I ever heard one

Barrack enters in shaking the snow off his cloak... He turns his head and listens...

perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20

It would seem the new year has begun

He makes his way to the table and begins filling all the mugs from the tankard. He takes the last two tankards. Handing one to Torrent and keeps the last for himself.

He raises his mug into the air...

A toast... to old friends and new allies... May the spirits protect both.

In a hushed tone...

It does not seem a good idea to me to begin a clandestine meeting in a location that may already be watched by... certain authorities... by announcing to the entire city that we're here by ramming down the door with a tree.

Male, Dwarven Storm Druid: 1 | Hp: 14 /14 | AC:18 T:12 FF:16 | CMD: 14 | Fort:+3 ,Ref:+2 ,Will:+6 ,(+1 will vs god, -1 vs shamans) | Init:+2 | Perc:+8

Hey thanks for the invite to the game... I got a fair amount of polish I need to apply to this character but I will definitely have it all done tomorrow.

Barrack never felt comfortable in this stupid city in this stupid valley. More than anything he just wanted to be back up in the mountains where the air was clear and the only sounds were the wind in the trees and the occasional sound of the wildlife. In this Damnable city all the noise of all these people made it difficult to even to hear the handful of spirits that made their home here.

As he moved through the night to his final destination he used a simple torch not wanting to draw attention to his ability to cast magic. Up ahead he sees someone who he has met out in the wilderness more than once.

Caelrahd... its good to see you. Glad I'm not the only person here who knows how to survive outside the City Walls. Ah and how is our friend Ashyra.

Barrack leans over and pulls some smoked meat from his belt pouch and slides the food to the wolf.

Thinking Dwarven Storm Druid of the Resistance. The winds of change are blowing over the mountains. A storm is coming and there is nothing that Barrack likes more than a good storm.

Kind of like the religion idea you threw out where people view the Gods as far away but Spirits are close. He'll constantly be in touch with the spirits and asking their guidance.
