The Brothers Backstory:
"Born and raised in Alkenstar, son of a duchy military leader, we were both sent to Alkenstar's main military academy -- Tirion a year or two behind his brother. One class involved studying potential military threats to the Grand Duchy of Alkenstar, and Tirion had the bright idea of looking beyond Geb and Nex (which is all most students consider in this exercise). He realized major magic powers have been demonstrated in other parts of the world -- the World Wound is a basic example -- that could wind up being a threat even to our little obscure corner of Golarion. Everyone in Alkenstar knows our gunpowder weapons may have an advantage against these threats -- they cannot be dispelled, for one thing! Tirion convinced his upperclassman brother to raise this issue with school leaders, and an academic discussion group formed to consider if Alkenstar should be looking at sending gun-toting troops to places like the World Wound, in case the gunpowder advantage was needed against some of the magic-wielding threats that emerge in various places. Bandy and Tirion were, of course, part of that group. Military leaders actually took notice, since some of the points the group published were legitimate. Duchy leaders commissioned training for teams to be formed and prepared for such missions -- and of course, the brothers volunteered to go into training to be part of such a team! During part of the years-long training, our particular team also looked at alternative combat training techniques, and the two of us discovered this exotic Ninja instructor that was heavily influenced by methods from Tian Xia. Some of the techniques bordered on magical abilities, but they were not disturbed by the lack of mana in our homeland, so we enthusiastically pursued that course of instruction! With even the hint of a rumor that a Runelord could potentially return to Varisia, Duchy leaders decided a team should investigate that region for risks, from whatever major magics might be there. Over a year ago, our particular team was selected to investigate that particular potential threat region, and our training then focused on learning about Varisia and the ancient Thassilonian Empire. Tirion studied the Thassilonian language, and that of giants as well (since it is said the Thassilonians employed giants as slaves and guards). Our training finally completed a few months ago, and -- after some bureaucratic delays -- Duchy officials actually funded this expedition." Bandersnatch, like all in the Duchy understands, appreciates and uses guns, but he has always felt that there is something to be said about a little "snicker" and a little "snack" He left the serious gunfighting training to his brother and he focused on battling with his two blades, enjoying the sounds they make as the whistle through the air. After all, as he tries to explain to his thickheaded little brother, there is an art to the blade, there is no art to point and shoot. |
