5'10" 135lbs Age:34
Ayaal stands out… always has, always will. Her body is so slender, it’s striking, particularly with her long, slender limbs. It’s like she never got out of her gawky teenage years, despite being nearly halfway to her 40th year. Her face doesn’t help. It’s not that she isn’t sort of pretty but her features are sharp and every bone in her face is angular. Kids used to joke they could cut themselves on her nose. And then there are her eyes… an unnatural, vivid green. They seem to glow in the dark. And her look is so intense, it is off-putting. Really, the only vaguely normal and definitely Varisian part of her is her hair – a wild, unruly mane of black. Ayaal wears a thick cotton monk's gi in red over a black, pleated, hakama. Atop both, slung diagonally across her chest, is a simple, almost military, grey cassock of her faith. Slung diagonally in the opposite direction is a worn bandolier. And Aya is never without her well-used bow. In combat, she always wears her War Bird Helm to lean in and own her heritage, who she is, AND to hopefully scare the sh!t out of her opponents as well as leaving a lasting impression on anyone who sees her. Her green eyes shine unnaturally from the mask. Alt Physical Features:
> Ayaal's mane of black hair turns silver in moonlight.
> Nearby bells ring when Ayaal walks by... which irritates her. So, she actively avoids locations where she knows bells are present. Personality:
Ayaal doesn't preach or try to convert anyone. Public speaking or being on any sort of stage makes her wince. Besides, she leaves the flowers and beauty speeches to the priests with congregations, soft beds, and time to be patrons of the arts. That’s not her role. Her Order brings the fight where it needs to be brought… so other people can enjoy peace and art. If she manages to convert anyone (which she doubts), it will be through her mostly quiet example. That said - among close companions - Aya is high-spirited, funny, irreverent, and bawdy. The Order beat lawfulness into her but Aya has always had a ’wild heart’ (Plumekith tend toward CG) and that impetuous streak has never fully left her. And (secretly) she likes to indulge it from time to time.
She doesn’t know where the Garuda crept into her family tree. Often Aya jokes that she isn’t sure when some Angel in her family line f@<ked a horned owl. But she has fully embraced this history as a part of her identity. She sees enemies as field mice and she is the owl that watches, stalks, and silently swoops down to kill them decisively. (Emphasis on PER, Stealth, and Acrobatics.) Background:
Ayaal always stood out. While other babies were pink and plump, she was lanky and sharp-featured (Plumekith Aasimar). It was clear from the get-go that something dormant had crawled down the family tree to emerge in her. Varisian families (like Aya’s) were often on the move and frequently dogged by superstitions. And while her siblings played with her like a ‘normal’ child, other kids and families were leery. She took more than her fair share of teasing and poorly hidden attempts to ward off evil. It made for a lonely childhood and teen years. And there was a period when Ayaal decided she might as well do evil if she was going to be seen as evil, so she ran with a rough crowd. (Trait: Criminal) Worse, in a family of entertainers, Ayaal was the only one encouraged to pursue interests outside of the limelight. She understood her parents’ whispers, they made less money with Ayaal in plain view. So, she became the ‘backstage’ crew and the caravan cook… where her skills could be appreciated while she went largely unseen. And that was just the way it went for awhile.
When asked about her relationship with Shelyn, all Ayaal can say is "It's complicated." Even as a little girl, she was always drawn to the Eternal Maiden (Trait: Touched by Divinity). But that wasn't unusual, was it? She was Varisian after all - Shelyn was a cottage industry among her people. You couldn't swing a dead cat in a caravan without hitting a couple aspiring bards and entertainers. And though she often had dreams of songbirds... Shelyn's blessed always seemed to be so talented. They could sing, dance, paint, play an instrument, or write a friggin' poem. Aya couldn't do ANY of that. Ayaal's miniscule talent (Prof: Cook) wasn't screaming 'Shelyn's favorite'. So, she kept her dedication to Shelyn quiet and stayed on the move with the caravan while earning coin as a cook. A 'chance' meeting on the road with a warrior-priestess of Shelyn changed all that. She had to be one of the nastiest looking hags Aya had ever seen. She drew more hard looks than Aya did! And her only talents were a gift for sharp-tongued criticism and displaying artistry at delivering a decisive, single-handed, beat-down on a group of highwaymen. Nine Hells thought Aya, maybe I can do that! She followed her ‘wild heart’, dropped her ladle, and apprenticed with the old lady (Class Combo: Cleric/Monk). In her six years of apprenticeship - and even after she took on the mantle of a warrior-priestess - Aya never learned the old woman's name. They were just 'old lady' and 'stupid girl'. Though, after 5 years, Aya was pleased that she was promoted (grudgingly) to 'girl'. Despite the friction of their relationship, Ayaal credits the old lady for many of the most important lessons in her life… specifically, how to turn a perceived deficit into a benefit and accepting who you are, warts and all. Aya spent a couple years as an itinerant priestess putting boot-to-ass for Shelyn before the dreams returned. This time, they were more like nightmares. The songbird was battered, sometimes wounded. It always flew North to circle over a beseiged city, fortified by walls within walls. The city's defenses were taxed, pressed on all sides by waves of demonic foes pouring from a great rent in the land miles away. The bird enters the city, settles on a haggard tree in a small courtyard garden and begins to sing. After the second sleepless week of these dreams, Aya headed for Kenabres - the location could be no other. Roaming the city, using her dreams as a guide, Ayaal soon found the courtyard. Every day, around her duties, she returns to the courtyard waiting for the bird to appear and give her further guidance. background Q’s:
1. What is your character’s name? Ayaal 2. How old is your character? 34 years 3. What would somebody see at first glance (i.e. height, weight, skin color, eye color, hair color, physique, race, and visible equipment)? Her body is so slender, it’s striking, particularly with her long, slender limbs. It’s like she never got out of her gawky teenage years. Her features are sharp and every bone in her face is angular. Her eyes are an unnatural, vivid green. 4. What additional attributes would be noticed upon meeting the character (i.e. Speech, mannerisms)? Ayaal was born somewhere on the roads in Varisia, in a caravan of entertainers. Varisians adopt the ‘it takes a village’ approach, so everyone in the troupe raised her. 6. Who are your parents? Are they alive? What do they do for a living? Her parents, Aemon and Artisya are traveling entertainers and are still alive. 7. Do you have any other family or friends? She has two brothers and a sister. They are entertainers with the family troop. She doesn’t really have friends. 8. What is your character’s marital status? Kids? Ayaal is unmarried and has no kids. 9. What is your character’s alignment? LG with some chaotic tendencies 10. What is your character’s moral code? So, she’ll do her best to protect the innocent but – big picture – she believes she can best protect innocent lives by taking out the bad guys. 11. Does your character have goals? She doesn’t have any lofty goals at the moment. Given what they are facing in the Worldwound, her ‘goal’ is to kick ass until she gets taken down. 12. Is your character religious? Ironically, for a cleric, Ayaal would say she is more ‘spiritual’ than religious. 13. What are your character’s personal beliefs? For Ayaal, the Shelynite church has two sides. The first is the lovely, artsy, clergy that inspires people and is dedicated to the arts of Shelyn. The other side is the clergy doing the hard and dirty work to make borderland areas safer that allows civilization to spread... and with that spread moves the arts. She’s trying to determine how she feels about that. 14. Does your character have any personality quirks (i.e. anti-social, arrogant, optimistic, paranoid)? Unlike most Shelynite priests, she isn’t the belle of the ball. She tends to be shy until she knows people well, isn’t a particularly charismatic speaker, and dreads any sort of public speaking. 15. Why does your character adventure? Being a warrior-priestess is her calling. 16. How does your character view his/her role as an adventurer? Ayaal sees her role as a bit of offense, defense, and support. 17. Does your character have any distinguishing marks (birth-marks, scars, deformities)? She a birthmark on the back of her hand.
