Description:

Athalaric is a somewhat gawky boy of medium height. He has shoulder-long, wavy dark hair and dark eyes that often flicker nervously. Although not unattractive per se, he clearly feels uncomfortable around people, speaks little, and when spoken to, he answers with a insecure voice. Maybe due to this obvious insecurity, his outward appearance is rather bland (he likes to think that it is designed to present very little reason for critique). He wears dark, unobtrusive robes, and soft boots so as to make no sound when moving. His fingernails are meticulously manicured and he takes a bath at least once a week.

Backstory:

Athalaric was born to a group of traveling folk (some call them gypsies). His father was the leader of that group, strong and charismatic. His rough laugh was catching, he was able to prevail in fist fights and arguments alike, and he always was able to secure a good deal for the group whenever they came to a to town. Athalaric's mother was a mysterious-looking beauty with flowing dark hair, eyes to drown in, and a lovely singing voice. His two brothers came very much after his father, strong and jovial, well-liked in the group, especially by the girls.

Now, Athalaric was different. He was neither strong nor confident around other people. He had his mother's hair and eyes, but not her voice. He was a bright lad but that did not seem to count for much. He had been curious as long as he could think, wanting to everything. How many stars there were, why they were traveling and other people weren't, and what the nature of fire was. Naturally, that made him a perfect target for the mockery of other children, especially his brothers. That drove him into reclusion even more. He liked the company of books so much more than sitting around the campfire, drinking with the others.

On his 17th birthday, the group passed trough the town of Clearvale-by-the-Lake.
In the window of an old bookshop there was a sign - Apprentice wanted!
The owner was an old and taciturn wizard who did not seem to like the boy at first but took him in nevertheless.
His family assumed that this disappearance was just one of the usual pipedreams and that would he come running back to them as soon as he was hungry enough. So they moved on but Athalaric never ran back.

Life in the shop was hard from an objective point of view. Athalaric had to stack and sort books and scrolls, pamphlets and maps. There was nothing that the old wizard did not keep. Athalaric had to sweep the floors and dust off the tomes, shop for anything that was needed - from bread and beer to quills and candles, and all he earned was food and shelter, and the occasional copper that a satisfied customer might drop into his pocket. But to Athalaric all that was worth it because after the shop was closed every evening he could sit down and read. And he read everything. Gnomish recipes and elven fairytales, halfling travel accounts and guides to distant locations of the world. He also tried to understand some of the magical writings and as his master noticed his apprentice's interest in the arcane, he taught him the foundations of the wizard's trade.

One day while searching through some scrolls trying to find the answer to a particularly vexing questions that his master had challenged him with, Athalaric discovered a manuscript titled "On the nature of the faerie folk: Inhabitants of the forst world - A treatise by the honorable Traven of house Dulapont." It was exactly what Athalaric had been looking for. But when reading the work, he noticed that it fell a little short of his expectations. On the very last page, he found the note: "Clearly, this interesting topic warrants further research and exciting new and relevant findings will be published in a continuation of this article soon."

When Athalaric presented his master with the manuscript and asked about the missing second part, the old wizard frowned.

"Oh yes, Traven Dulapont. I remember him. Quite reknowned that one. He also came into my shop many times and requested very specific books... Only after that tragedy that happened, he never showed up here again... I suppose that this second part that he speaks of was never published. However, he may have some drafts at home..." The wizard hesitated and then grabbed a leather-bound tome from one shelf. "Here, take this to the Dulapont's estate. Tell him it is a gift from an old friend and send him my best regards. Maybe he will receive you and, if you are in luck, he will share some of his unfinished research with you..."
