Background
Ata was sold into servitude on his 5th birthday. His new 'family' treated him well and used him fully to get things done. His family got paid half now and the other half on Ata's 15th birthday. Standing Gracious, Ata's 'mother', has never loved him but has not mistreated him. She is a shrewd merchant who has no problem with having accidents happen to help keep her money from going where she doesn't want it going. Standing Gracious works with The Guild on occasion and is in good standing with them. Standing Gracious sent Ata to help with the caravan in Kalamere hoping that Ata would not return knowing how dangerous an assignment it is.
Standing Gracious would sometimes send Ata on assignments for her Guild dealings. During one of his earlier assignments Ata worked with a desert scout named Water Willing, he is a member of the Guild. Water Willing took a liking to Ata and on more than one occasion offered to train Ata with the limited time they had together. After a year or two Water Willing started asking for Ata when assignments warranted it, he even would make excuses to have more time with Ata to increase his training. Ata was an excellent pupil in living off the land and he was an excellent marksman with thrown daggers or javelins. Ata came to think of Water Willing as his big brother, looking forward to their assignments and training together.
When Ata was 12 he was on a caravan run when it was suddenly enveloped by a desert storm. Ata became separated from the caravan. Sandflakes in Shadow, a mischievous desert spirit, had created the storm, as he had been want to do on more than one occasion, to see what the mortals would do. When he was in a 'mood' the panic of mortals was most amusing to him. This time was different though, Sandflakes in Shadow, had seen Ata in a vision. His vision was quiet cryptic and left him more than a bit frustrated. When he had seen Ata with the caravan he thought now was the time his vision had shown him and he would see where it took him. The storm lasted over two days with Ata finding a bit of shelter in an empty badger den. Ata had lost some of his equipment and supplies making things a bit more difficult then he would have wanted. When the storm had calmed Ata found himself somewhere unfamiliar. Ata made his way home, hoping he was going in the right direction. A few days later Ata came across a very weak and thirsty yeddim, one of it's eyes had been clawed out and there was a couple of dried, and crusted with blood, claw wounds. Hoping this yeddim could get him to some type of civilization Ata used the last of his water to feed it and clean its wounds. Ata's hopes were answered, leaning on the yeddim, they made good progress for two more days. That evening Ata saw the lights of a caravan and made his way in that direction, crawling the last couple of miles before sunrise.
In Ata's barely conscious state he imagined the yeddim fading away and leaving in its place a tall, thin pointy haired man in white robes. "You have shown me something this day boy. We will meet again in time." Then Sandflakes in Shadow faded away. Ata was recovered barely alive by the caravan and taken home. Ata didn't notice the new tattoo he had on his shoulder until a few weeks later, it showed a palm tree, in the desert with a white shadow, bent over as if blowing in the wind and refusing to fall.
Ata has met Sandflakes in Shadow a couple of times each year. Sandflakes in Shadow has appeared more frequently the closer it gets to Ata's 15th birthday. Sandflakes in Shadow is still awaiting for what his vision had shown him those years ago. In the meantime Ata has grown on him quite a bit.
Ata's birthday is in 2 weeks. (Or whatever the GM feels like it is...) ;)
