Aspen’s family has been caretakers of a remote nature shrine to Gozreh for the past ten generations. The shrine focuses around a giant tree, which for some reason has well outlived the normal lifetime of its species, is extremely isolated and only really visited by wizards, alchemists and others trying also to live longer than normal. These supplicants often leave trappings of wisdom: books, notes, sometimes even the odd ancient piece of armor or weapon; thus, despite the remote location, there were always books around.
Aspen was the youngest of five siblings, Oak, Birch, Hawthorne, and Maple, (the forest he grew up in was VERY interesting.) By the time he was born, his brothers and sisters had already taken over or were training for most of the positions and left little for Aspen to do. One day he found a book about heroes and adventures and was enamored. From that day, he found all of the books he could on armor, shields, weapons, bows and how to make and use them. He made all that he could and used what he found left at the shrine.
Despite his acute interest, Aspen still had to go through the training to be a cleric and to be able to run the shrine as needed. This instilled a fear and devotion to Gozreh and, contrary to his ambitions, he did learn how to please his god.
As per family rule, he left the family when he came of age to spread the faith of Gozreh and the Tree of the shrine. He left with a tidy sum of money and a sprig of the tree that had taken root. For the next few years, he spent time making his own armor and weapons and working for different people as a shield, a fighter or just a deterrent. He always carried his sprig from the Tree, but he never found a place to plant it and paid little attention to it as well.
The isolation of the shrine did have some repercussions for Aspen. He became cripplingly shy of new people and spent very little time interacting or spending time with people outside his family. He is actually so shy he mostly just hides in his armor and wears a helmet and scarf in so that only his eyes show.
