House Chandros was a lesser family in Cheliax. They stood in the gap between noble and merchant houses. While technically a noble family, they had little clout. It was fortunate for them when their eldest heir married Eleutheria of House Pisti.
There had always been rumors in Eleutheria’s family that they bore celestial blood, she’d never paid much mind to it. They’d certainly never made it public knowledge. When she and Dunixi birthed their first child, all of the family rumors returned to her quickly. The child had feathers for hair and his face was perfect. Absolutely perfect. Some might have said “angelic.” That word is what Dunixi feared when he killed the midwife. Extreme measures started Aeschylus’ life and they continued for years to come. The child was hidden away and one of Dunixi’s bastards took his place. Over the course of his youth, Aeschylus was burned with acid to hide his beautiful face and his feathered hair. He was generally kept out of site. When he turned fifteen, still looking like a youth of six, he gave his parents further grief by growing a pair of feathered wings. His father cut these off, brutally, ignoring the child’s screams and his mother’s pleas.. Years later, his mother retired with him to the countryside to raise him in seclusion. This took him out of sight of servants and the public, and removed him from his father’s reach. She taught him what she could of faith and service, loyalty and friendship. This last was an alien idea to the boy who’d spent his life separated from others. He studied all of the time. He put to memory his father’s tactical manuals and journals of conquest. The library was well stocked and he was hungry for stimulation wherever he could find it. Iridescent tears of blue, red, yellow and green cascaded down a rough cheeked face. Sweat pour down his brow as he finished burying his mother. She’d died, peacefully, in the night. Age had finally caught up to her. Aeschylus was forty-two years of age and hardly looked like he could sign on to serve in a mercenary company. He set out, that day, to find his future. He didn’t know where he was headed, but he knew exactly where he did not wish to go. He put his back to Egorian and set out for parts unknown. That night he had a dream. As much a vision as a dream, really. He saw a five winged angel. At the same time it was a burning heart, wrapped in chains. The angel flew on two wings, two covered his eyes and his final wing covered his right foot. The other foot, exposed, was a cloven hoof. No words were spoken. Aeschylus simply knew where he must go, what his purpose was. After days of walking, he found new lessons and a new home. The temple he’d found was one with clerics of several members of the Celestial Host as well as Sarenrae, the Dawn Flower. After they deemed his training as a servant of Ragathiel, he was called into service for life. As he took his oaths of service, he forsook the name his father gave him and took on the moniker Deimos. Another boon granted to him was the restoration of his wings upon the swearing of his vows. Years have passed since Deimos took on the mantle of service. It’s nearly been a decade. He has served well and readily whenever called by his lord. His first calling was one close to his heart. Perhaps a test from the Angel of Vengeance. He was called on to kill his half brother. Dallin had done well for himself over the years. He’d gathered power and acquired a position as a Hellknight Signifer. He regularly called on the power of Asmodeus to express the will of Cheliax and House Thrune. He was a good servant, but he was just that, a servant. When Deimos and Dallin clashed, Deimos was a young man, in his prime and with all the fervor of one whose life is just beginning. Dallin was bent and broken, past his sixtieth year. While he had the wisdom of ages to draw on, he was not as hale and hardy as he once was. Brother fought brother. Fiend fought Archon. Good fought evil. In the end, Deimos walked away and Dallin arrived in Hell just a few years sooner than he expected. Deimos has climbed the ranks of service and in doing so has earned the title of Arbiter for the Angel of Vengeance. His calling now takes his west, to serve once more. Only Ragathiel knows where he shall be needed and what he shall be doing there. Appearance:
Arbiter Deimos is scarred about the head, face and shoulders. Over the years the scars have come under the same influence as his face originally did. The scars have aligned and contorted themselves until they match each other perfectly. His face is once again completely symmetrical.
His eyes are a crystalline blue, bright as the clear sky, and often reflect the pain that he’s felt for years. He has no hair and no beard. Both were burned away when he was but a child. A scar from when he was training at the temple to the Celestial Host crosses one cheek and a twin to it is slowly forming on the other. Feathered wings, as white as freshly fallen snow, sprout from his back. While they are not yet strong enough to carry him, he certainly hopes that is the case someday. To soar like his ancestors would have in service to the gods. It is rare that one sees Deimos’ features for he wears the mask of his slain brother. The mask has been remade, after a fashion. The blackened steel it once was is now burnished. Beautiful blue eyes have been painted on where one might expect ports in a standard helm. Most prominently, the holy symbol of Ragathiel is emblazoned on the crown of the helm. Deimos’ armor shines in the sunlight. Like his helm, it is burnished steel. On almost all of his body the metal is plain, shining steel. The sole exception is his left foot, where the greave and sabaton are painted red and black, respectively. Personality:
Years upon years of hardship built a stony foundation in Deimos’ persona. It was only through the love of his mother, and later the friendship he found with the clerics and acolytes of the temple that he found reason to smile. He is getting more and more practice at this as time goes on. He tries not to glower, but sometimes he just cannot help it.
He is stern, but not naïve. He is fair and just and swift to act when called upon. |
