Uhmm...anybody out there?

Odd question for the group: can familiars gain class levels?

I understand that, to qualify as a familiar, you have to be a normal, natural animal (unless we're taking the Improved Familiar Feat into account...but that's a whole new ballgame). Still, after adventuring with her wizard/sorcerer for years, should we be giving XP to familiars as if they were NPC henchmen/cohorts? And if so, when they level up, can they take character classes?

I've never thought of that before until tonight. Maybe I'm missing an obvious rule, but I can see no game mechanic that prevents this. Even if it's kosher, I'm still not sure I'd allow it--an Epic-Level Wizard's familiar would have a stat block most PC's would kill for--but the question still begs answering.

Thoughts? Speak up rules-gods.... ;)

All,

When I previously asked if anybody was interested in a NE Ohio Greyhawk game, I got a few replies asking for information about my campaign. I have since created a website that gives some details about my personal World of Greyhawk:

https://home.comcast.net/~antithesis/

It's still very much a work in progress, but this should give you the general feel of my game. If you have any comments about what you see there or are interested in getting in touch to game, please e-mail me at: antithesis@comcast.net

Thanks!

Just wanted to share a little anecdote with everybody.

All the way driving down to Columbus for Origins, I was bending my wife's ear about Erik Mona. I had my nose out of joint something fierce concerning his last Dragon editorial, re: "what a good time it is to be a Forgotten realms fan". It's not important what I was so upset about, but suffice it to say that I was all set to run into the exhibitor's hall, find the Paizo kiosk and give Erik what-for about it.

Well, I found the him and the hall and let some (toned-down) vitriol (I'm always embarrased getting loud and irate) out.

I was somewhat surprised by the response I got. Mr. Mona thoughtfully listened to my complaints and actually empathized with me, for the most part. He nodded sagely as I ranted and offered thoughful, reasoned insight in return. Five minutes later, I walked away from the kiosk with some perspective.

For those of you that have never met him, I'm posting this message to tell you that Erik truly cares about Paizo magazine readers. It was clear to me upon meeting him that he is an intelligent guy who seems to have never lost the magic of what the gaming experience is. He really does listen to what we readers have to say and (even though his hands are sometimes tied) tries his best to shape Paizo's magazines into what we want them to be.

Erik, thanks for your time at Origins--and I'm sorry if I came across as a jackass.

...seeing as how #3-5 are available in the online store. How about reprinting/reissuing #0-2? Erik? James? Guys?

Do I have to beg? Promise to subscribe? Buy you the adult beverage of your choice at Origins? ;)

All,

Just a notion that's been running through my head lately, after recently converting over from 2nd Edition. I'd like to know how everyone feels about it:

Are we pricing younger gamers out of the hobby?

$32.95. $27.95. $22.00. These are the prices that stare at me from the backs of the books I'm contemplating buying. I have a relatively good, stable job, so for me, the anguish over buying sourcebooks isn't too great. But what about younger gamers (and when I mean younger, I mean anywhere from 12-24 years old)? Most of the demographic I'm talking about don't have high-paying jobs. In today's economy, as bad as it is, are we pricing a generation out of the hobby entirely?

I realize that with smaller companies making higher-quality products, prices will jump. I also realize that these prices aren't too far off what you'd pay for a normal fiction hardcover nowadays. But I still think the point is salient. Is it time to reconsider what our hobby is costing its enthusiasts?

Thanks,
