appearance:
Andrei stands just over six feet tall, with a well-muscled, athletic build. His somewhat ruddy skin is a clear hint of his Varisian heritage, but his hair is darker and straighter--more Chelaxian--than a full Varisian's would be. He keeps that hair cut above the shoulders and pulled back, with a neatly groomed mustache, all in keeping with Korvosan Guard regulations, even though he's no longer serving. He wears a well made breastplate that looks to be of dwarven make, and carries a large wooden shield that's nearly black in color and lacks any heraldry. He also carries an impeccably maintained bardiche that appears too large to wield while using a shield.

background:
Like most Korvosans, Andrei is a bit of a mutt. He inherited his strongly Varisian name from his mostly Varisian father, Viorec Markescu, but he has Chelaxian blood on both sides. His mother, Liana, even has some Shoanti blood. His grandmother, who lived with them when he was small, always insisted he speak Varisian with her (which likely sparked the interest he has in languages even now), but he always thought of himself more as Korvosan than as a member of any ethnic group.

From childhood, he took after his orderly mother when it came to organization and schedules, and found himself attracted to Abadar and his church for the structure and stability it provided. His more whimsical father, who loosely held the Starsong as his patron, was skeptical at first but when he announced an interest in exploring the priesthood Viorec gave his blessing. He began his training in adolescence and it did not go particularly well. He had the ability, Banker Crispin was certain, to learn some divine magic, but he struggled to master the prayers and showed no aptitude whatsoever for channeling energy.

Things turned around, however, when his training called for him to serve with the watch. His eyes and ears proved keen, and he took to the shield and spear he was issued like a fish to water. It wasn't long before his training had shifted completely away from the priesthood to military service. The discipline it demanded suited him perfectly, and he quickly learned a variety of polearms, and the techniques for using them with shields. He excelled so much in this training that he found a position serving his god and his city as a member of the Korvosan Guard.

He enjoyed keeping the streets safe and orderly but began to notice more and more some of the great cities problems, including the plight of orphans. One in particular--a boy named Iozef--could often be found in the alleys near his apartment. He took to looking after the boy: giving him food frequently and clothing when it looked like he needed it, even letting him sleep in his apartment when he needed to. Then one day, without any warning, Iozef disappeared. He asked his superiors to investigate but one street urchin wasn't sufficient cause for them, so he launched his own investigation that quickly consumed all of his free time. He heard rumors of a shadowy figure--Gaedren Lamm--who preyed on the cities orphans. He implored his boss again, to no avail; so, he resigned his post to seek justice on his own. He used up what contacts he had left hunting Lamm, only to discover that he had already been dealt with by another group of people who had been wronged by him in one way or another. Now, he's following up on a lead about who those people might be, in the hopes of confirming their success, and thanking them.
