I read in another thread, essentially, that being a "tourist" rather than a thematically appropriate character concept is to be preferred. I want the player's guide to sell me on why being some random schmuck would be more fun than the awesome concepts I read about. Frankly, the idea kind of killed a little of the fun of it for me.

If you can't be a character with ties to the Dark Tapestry in THIS adventure path, when will it EVER be appropriate? Thinking of interesting ways to connect my character to the DT was half the fun.

Also, having my character's history handed to me... bleh. If that's the way it's going, I hope it's handled well. Having my character's history/memories not match up with reality? Done that. It wasn't fun then. Maybe it would be now, but I'm already kind of annoyed with it, because the DM had a bad case of, "let's not give you enough information to base any decisions on, then punish you for making 'wrong' decisions." Oh, and, "it was all a dream." If I ever have to play that again, I am out. What a waste of my time, basically nullifying everything that I worked for.

OK, that turned into a rant. Sorry.

Andrei sighed, wiping his hand on his pants. "Well, I suppose it is enough that we have witnesses, neh?" He smiled at the townsfolk, looking for some faces in particular, but he knew the chance that his family were there was small.

"Let's collect our fee for a job well done, what do you say, my friends?" The sentiment seemed to have a lot more sincerity behind it than the first time he'd used it.

male human fighter 5

Andrei slapped Jawn on the back and grinned at the others, even as he went with Cerinwë to ascertain that the monster wouldn't rise again.

(Assuming it is dead:)

He fished up the thing's head and nodded to Mijanor. "As you said, the mayor. I tell you, the look on his face when he sees this, it will be a fine thing."

male human fighter 5

"Grab onto the flotsam!" Andrei yelled to the townsfolk, hoping it would be enough to aid those who couldn't swim. He didn't consider leaping into the water to help them - his armor would have dragged him down immediately, and the wretched monster wasn't dead yet.

He continued to press the attack, cursing his lack of foresight at not getting between the monster and the dock when he had the chance.

attack 1: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (8) + 15 = 23
attack 2: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 28

pot.dmg.1: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13+2d6 ⇒ (1, 1) = 2
pot.dmg.2: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8+2d6 ⇒ (1, 3) = 4

male human fighter 5

"Go back to whatever hell you came from!" Andrei yelled, chopping at the monster and parrying its retaliatory tentacle strikes in a strangely graceful dance, trying to distract it from Jawn.

attack 1: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (17) + 15 = 32
attack 2: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21

pot.dmg.1: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11+2d6 ⇒ (2, 3) = 5
pot.dmg.2: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13+2d6 ⇒ (4, 3) = 7

male human fighter 5

Andrei felt the surge of energy rolling in a wave from Mijanor, and his eyes cleared of their haze of pain. Determined to kill the vile monster the idiot Keepers had summoned, he redoubled his efforts.

attack 1: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (5) + 15 = 20
attack 2: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26

pot.dmg.1: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15+2d6 ⇒ (4, 6) = 10
pot.dmg.2: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12+2d6 ⇒ (4, 1) = 5

If Jawn moves in, Andrei will 5' step north to help him.

male human fighter 5

Andrei tore himself free of the thing's tentacles, staggering under the impact of their blows. If they didn't deal with it soon, he knew, he wouldn't live to see the sun rise over the misty wilderness again.

"My thanks to you and your god, Mijanor!" he called, no trace of his thoughts in his tone. "Once we've put this monster down, I'll raise a tankard to the both of you!" He drove his sword into the beast's hide again.

attack 1: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (4) + 15 = 19
attack 2: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27

pot.dmg.1: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13+2d6 ⇒ (4, 4) = 8
pot.dmg.2: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11+2d6 ⇒ (3, 6) = 9

I'll 5' step if it helps Jawn.

male human fighter 5

Sorry guys, I came down with a massive fever and was stuck in bed with the mocus. :(

Andrei waited for Cerinwë's magic to stop sparking before slashing at the thing again, his face set with black fury at the murderous monster. "Let there be an end to this evil, let it die on the end of our swords!"

Full attack:
attack 1: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (18) + 15 = 33
pot. dmg.: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12+2d6 + 1 ⇒ (5, 6) + 1 = 12
attack 2: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22
pot. dmg.: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12+2d6 + 1 ⇒ (4, 1) + 1 = 6

male human fighter 5

Rolling for hps: 1d10 ⇒ 3

Andrei is leveled up as well.

male human fighter 5

By all means, let's kick some ass!

male human fighter 5

Andrei is fine with everyone else taking first pick. If no one else wants it, he'll take the cloak, but he won't kick up a fuss if someone else wants it.

male human fighter 5

"It is a sad thing when the madmen are the ones let loose in the sanatorium. Let us ensure that no more of his sort," Andrei nudged the fallen mage with his foot, "are torturing the patients of this place before we look for clues. It is the least we can do to see that they do not suffer any more than necessary."

He shrugged. "It will also ensure that no one takes an opportunity to backstab us while we're busy looking."

male human fighter 5

Following Mijanor's example, Andrei attempted to bull his way past the guards in pursuit of the mage.

Overrun: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25

If the armed guard goes down due to Cerinwë's magic missiles first, Andrei just chases the mage. If he catches up to him, he attacks.

potential attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 28
potential damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10

male human fighter 5

His mouth open in a silent yell, Andrei hacked away at the guard, trying to get through to reach the mage before he decided to run.

attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14
potential damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8

male human fighter 5

Crit damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9

Since intimidation didn't work on the guards previously, Andrei didn't bother with it now, instead chopping at them to bring them down with the greatest speed possible.

male human fighter 5

Same deal as last round: pursue and destroy. Hopefully the guards are still caught in Cerinwë's Web.

possible attack:1d20 + 10 ⇒ (19) + 10 = 29
possible damage:1d8 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7

possible crit:1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13 Not enough, right?

male human fighter 5

Andrei dashed after the bloodstained mage with his sword held ready, a stream of colorful curses revealing where he had run. He took the stairs two and three at a time, hoping to catch the villain before he could bring any backup to bear.

Keep after the mage, and make another attack if he catches up.

possible attack:1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27
possible damage:1d8 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8

male human fighter 5

Cerinwë: Oui, I mean yes, you're right. ;)

"A secret passage! Mijanor, with me!" Andrei charges full tilt after the mage, hoping nothing nasty has been prepared for such an eventuality.

If Andrei catches up to the mage he'll make an attack.

possible attack:1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19
possible damage:1d8 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8

male human fighter 5

Here's hoping!

Will save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18

male human fighter 5

In full agreement with Cerinwë about the obvious butcher they faced, Andrei charged forward to attack.

attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (6) + 10 = 16
possible damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9

male human fighter 5

Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17

male human fighter 5

"Peek inside and see who is in there," Andrei suggested in a whisper.

male human fighter 5

Andrei grimaced at the poor victims of the torturer; it was clear there was little more they could do to help them. "We will do what we can to see that you are given the healing you need," he promised, trying to reassure them. As he walked by the headless corpse, he gave it a final angry kick. "Crove has much to answer for," he growled, glaring at Rupman. "Again I ask: Where can we find him?"

I vote we try the northern passage closest to us next.

male human fighter 5

Still enraged by the cruelty he'd seen, Andrei nevertheless held his attack when Mijanor offered the blue creature a chance to surrender. "One move, and you'll look worse than these poor sods," he promised darkly, his sword held ready to deliver on his promise.

Readied attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30
possible damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13

Roll to confirm crit:1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17
possible extra damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11

male human fighter 5

Even as the others spoke, Andrei burst in with Mijanor and without hesitation laid into the blue humanoid. "Die, you filth!" he hissed, enraged by the evidence of torture he'd seen ever since coming to the asylum.

Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13
possible damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12

If the torturer is an aberration he has +12 to hit and +2d6 damage.

male human fighter 5

"I agree," Andrei said quietly, nodding at Cerinwë. He moved up to one of the western doors, ready to open them and face whatever lay beyond at his companions' signal. Looking at them, he asked, "Is everyone ready?"

Maybe we should just open one door and use the other for cover until we know what's behind them?

male human fighter 5

Andrei obligingly brought out his everburning torch and passed it to Jawn. "Yes, let us see what lies below this crazy place." He gave the patients a pitying look; however mad they were, they didn't deserve this treatment.

He's prepared to lead or follow Jawn downstairs, whichever seems better. If the inmates attack, though, he'll try to knock them out with the flat of his sword again.

male human fighter 5

Andrei approached the lunatics warily, staying well out of reach. "Where are the orderlies?" he asked in a reasonable tone, edging past to give a quick peek around the corners beyond them.

Do the inmates appear hostile?

male human fighter 5

"Back up, let them come at you one by one," Andrei suggested, moving back to give Jawn room. Raising his voice, he addressed the guards. "We have business with Crove. If you keep us from it, you'll have to answer for it to the mayor. If you keep fighting us... well, there are worse things than facing the mayor, neh?" He raised his sword and beckoned them on, wearing an evil grin.

Andrei takes a 5' step back. If Jawn withdraws, he'll keep the guards busy.

Intimidate attempt: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30

male human fighter 5

Glancing back to find that Jawn wasn't using the soft approach with the guards, and seeing that more were on their way in, Andrei hammered his foe with the flat of his blade again, hoping to drop him so that he could aid Jawn instead.

Attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25-4
potential damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11

male human fighter 5

Andrei attacks the guard just north of his position, still going for nonlethal blows.

attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25-4
possible damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12

male human fighter 5

initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17

Andrei will run as far towards Jawn as possible this round. If anyone shows up to block his way/is hostile, he'll try striking them with the flat of his blade again.

attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23-4
possible damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9

male human fighter 5

Andrei wrinkled his nose at the man, dragging him into a chair. "This poor sot looks more like a vagabond than anyone that belongs in an asylum, unless this is how all their patients look." He glanced around at the myriad books lining the walls. "Unless you think there is something worthwhile hidden amid all this, perhaps we should move on."

male human fighter 5

Andrei glanced back at Mijanor. "Keep an eye on our little worm, and the rest of us will deal with this fellow."

Initiative:1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Andrei intends to hit the man with the flat of his blade.
attack:1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17-4
possible damage:1d8 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11

male human fighter 5

Andrei shoved Rupman forward with a scowl, his sword not quite threatening the man... though it was clear that it might at any moment. "Well? Where is this friend of yours to be found? Are there traps to avoid?"

Intimidate, if necessary: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 15

male human fighter 5

Andrei wiped off his blade, but kept it in hand. He nodded at the others' words. "I think it best that we stopped this one before he could cry an alarm, but you are right - perhaps any others are best captured rather than killed." He glanced at the doors, then looked to Jawn. "Are those doors safe, my friend?"

male human fighter 5

Gah, my internet connection was crapped out all day! Sorry guys. :(

male human fighter 5

Andrei followed his comrades into the fight, his new sword at the ready.

Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19
possible damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11

I'll try to get out of the doorway with a 5'step asap, preferably heading down to block the doorways possible.

male human fighter 5

Andrei accepted the sword with thanks to the poor soaked halfling. "Soon I must open a shop to sell all these swords, neh?" he joked, fixing the sheath of the sword to his back. He patted his scimitar regretfully. "Poor Rushenka knows that she may not protect us as well as this new blade might. But the other scimitar - ah, that might make a hook big enough for so big a mouth as our friend the worm here." He glared threateningly at Rupman. "Our survival is your survival, so you had best be silent unless what you say may be of help to us."

To the asylum?

male human fighter 5

In that case, so long as no one objects to me using it:

crossbow attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16
possible damage: 1d8 ⇒ 3

male human fighter 5

Having no bow, Andrei could only look on as the others fired.

Didn't we find a crossbow recently? I don't see it on Jawn's loot list. Not that it's too useful without bolts, but...

male human fighter 5

"Does any one of us use a sword besides myself?" Andrei asked, looking around. "Whatever its enchantment, it did not suffice to keep its owner alive. Of course, leaving it is a waste..."

male human fighter 5

Wiping off his blade, Andrei resheathed it and gave the dead body a disgusted look. "He should have surrendered. Why did Hyve not surrender, Rupman? And this piece of the spawn you spoke of, does it still remain within him now that he is dead?"

After hearing what Hyve's notes said about the potions, he grunted. "Maybe we could use them against the spawn, if you think it safe. Will you take them?"

male human fighter 5

"Vatra!" Andrei's blade ran with fire once more as he fended off the Keeper, then pushed the attack.

AOO: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 26+2 flanking
Possible damage: 1d6 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11 + 1d6 ⇒ 2 fire

attack: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (7) + 11 = 18+2 flanking
possible damage: 1d6 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11 + 1d6 ⇒ 6 fire

male human fighter 5

If Andrei can move to cut him off from being able to flee down the tunnel, he'll do that, taking an AOO if necessary. In any case:

Attack: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (4) + 11 = 15

male human fighter 5

Init:1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23

Andrei leaped into the shallow water, running to close with Hyve.

attack: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19
possible dmg: 1d6 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10

"Surrender now, and we will not kill you out of hand," he said, wearing a nasty smile.

male human fighter 5

Andrei grunted agreement. "It seems dwarves are as wise as they are a boon in battle. Come Jawn, you go down first, then I will follow, then we will take the mage between us all, neh? That way there will be two of us to watch over him at either end of the ladder. But let us go quietly... and that goes for you too," he said to the Keeper with distaste.

Andrei is also willing to go down first if you prefer.

male human fighter 5

Andrei has his sword out and ready, but that's about it.

male human fighter 5

I would like to bump up Andrei's AC closer to Mijanor's with the ring if everyone is OK with it.

Andrei shrugged, deferring to the group consensus. "Then let us be about it, before the thing has time to lay more of the city to waste." He murmured a command to his sword, and the flames died out once more. "You," he addressed the Keeper grimly, "come with us, and try nothing stupid."

male human fighter 5

Andrei moved a little away for privacy to discuss the matter. "If Crove is the ringleader, let us find him first. He is at the asylum, yes?" Lowering his voice further, he added, "If we have both of them there together, it may serve as irresistable bait for the spawn."

Is there anywhere in the city without access from below, where the spawn would be forced to come into the open?
