Several years ago, Amy was involved in a nasty accident involving several balls, a stampeding herd of cows, several ducks, and the contents of a smithy. It had to be seen to be believed, but the end result was a horribly smashed jaw that made it difficult to eat, much less do anything more interesting. This was even more of a problem for her, though... because Amy was born with a small amount of arcane talent, and spells usually required a degree of verbal activation to be used.
Part of her salvation came in the form of a specially grafted jaw, a strange fixture encased in ceramic that she ultimately ended up taking. Unfortunately, there was only so much it could do - she could eat, but any sort of talking was difficult, and even now she almost never speaks.
That might be for the best, because Amy is generally willful, caustic, and sarcastic in conversations, believing it's the duty of other people to take care of the minor details. She's not totally above flinging a few magic missiles towards a threat, but she's too lazy to bother unless it really seems important. She can be nice to those who show her kindness first, and she has a bit of a soft spot for kids, but as far as she's concerned, she's mostly just along for the ride. It wouldn't be unusual of her to set up a chair and have a cup of tea while watching others fight for their lives (and, indeed, this would be the place she'd cast spells from).
Incidentally, years of being unable to speak have taught her how to use the [Silent Spell] metamagic far more effectively, and she no longer has to spend a higher spell slot or extend the casting time to use it. When the sorcerer's ability to avoid most materials is added in, the end result is that she's able to do most magic with no more than a gesture.
