"Amadeus Ra" was born Joseph Van Horne in Middlesburg, West Virginia. At an early age he yearned to move beyond the coal mining destiny that plagued the town. He attempted sports and education, but found himself mediocre at both. What he excelled in was being weird and acting. Realizing that he could use such skills to make himself wealthy, he moved away from Middlesburg and headed to New York.
He arrived there as Amadeus Ra, reincarnated Egyptian Pharaoh and spiritualist. He specialized in fleecing old widows of their fortunes, conducting fraudulent seances and otherwise putting on performances. He associated with all the prominent occultists of the day, then made headlines by denouncing them as frauds while promoting himself as the genuine article. Along the way he accumulated a great deal of occult knowledge, almost against his best efforts. It was no great surprise that an heiress would hire him to investigate, and if said heiress is attractive, well then... Perhaps it is time for Amadeus to take a bride.
Pillars of Stability:
1. Clarence Herndon, Amadeus' attorney and financial adviser. Clarence is his spiritual guide, which is sad, because he's a slimeball. But he's a slimeball who knows all of Amadeus' secrets and with whom he can be himself utterly. There may be a romantic aspect to their relationship, but neither would dare call themselves homosexual.
2. Lucianne Beldoir, who is herself a con-artist of the highest caliber. She took a young Amadeus under her wing when he first came to New York and actually gave him the name Amadeus Ra. She is a combination of lover/mother to Amadeus, simultaneously mentor and temptress.
When I think of Amadeus, I think of Stephen Fry as Lord Melchett in Black Adder, a large imposing man, with someone with a great deal of feigned civility.
