About Alexander Ribaux, a/k/a Phoenix
When he was two years old, his Varisian traveler family were murdered and he was sold to pay for his father's gambling debts. He narrowly avoided a life of slavery when he was noticed by a childless Taldoran noblewoman who prevailed upon her husband to "adopt" the traumatized boy. He was raised as a child of privilege in the capital of Taldor, but his early experiences with watching his family burn made him prone to nightmares and upsets. To assuage his night terrors, he was given a companion, an Ulfen boy of his same age named Tarik. The two became fast friends and despite his adopted father's wishes, they now consider one another to be brothers.
At 14, he left Taldor to travel to Varisia to try to rejoin his people, but too many years away made him unwelcome. He was unable to find any family member who would claim him, so with his chosen family (Tarik), he now wanders rather aimlessly, seeking to do good wherever the wind blows him.
He has head the voices of the dead for as long as he can remember. In fact, it was those voices that told him to leave his family's houseboat and hide in the forest before the attack came on that fateful night. He knows that some people find his connection with the spirits of the dead to be creepy or unsettling, but for him, it's as natural as breathing, and he frankly doesn't care what other people think.
