Backstory:
Alexa's father was a wealthy nobleman, a member of one of Korvosa's prestigious Dock Families, who had an affair with an elf woman. When his elven mistress died, Sander Marcane was left with a young daughter that he didn't want to deal with, but he had enough of a conscience that he was unwilling to abandon her. So he provided for the child to be sent to a boarding school and later, when she showed an aptitude for magic, funded her education at the Academae.
Being very bookish and passionate about magic, Alexa was happy to absorb herself in her studies and not make any trouble for her father's family. However, just a year before she would have graduated, Alexa was caught up in a scandal. Her crime was being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but she was accused of murder, on a night out with some fellow students. Although she protested her innocence, there was a supposed eyewitness and evidence was found on her person. Eventually, the charges were dropped when the witness was found dead, and Alexa was released. But the event damaged her reputation enough that her father, who had always been distant, was afraid of scandal falling too harshly on him, so he cut her off. Without her father's money, Alexa was forced to drop out of the Academae (and her reputation there had been badly tarnished anyways).
Thanks to a friend of hers, Alexa was able to discover that it was most likely Gaedren Lamm, a notorious criminal, who framed her and ruined her reputation. She wants to get revenge on him, and also hopes that if she can find hard evidence, she might clear her name and be acknowledged by the Academae.
