About Aldous Preklikin

Appearance:
Although in truth a lightly-built, middle-aged Half-Elf with piercing green eyes, Aldous goes out of his way to hide his more 'otherworldly' features, trying to pretend to be human. Fortunately, Nature has blessed him with a predominantly human guise; only those who knew the circumstances of his birth (and therefore know the truth), or those who spend a great deal of time with him, might observe that at times (generally when tired, excited, or frightened), his voice shifts from a baritone to being more lyrical, and that he has particularly high cheek-bones, and ever-so-slightly pointed ears.

Naturally blonde, Aldous fastidiously dyes and bleaches his hair to achieve a two-tone 'black-and-white' look that he feels is distinguished. He generally dresses in a comfortable explorer's outfit, which has plenty of pockets for small nick-knacks, notes, and the occasional lost apple.

However, whenever he summons his Companion, whether for advice, or simply for the comfort that its presence provides, he wears a brightly-coloured red-and-gold scarf tied around his head (to hide the strange rune that appears).

Background:
The son of an Elf investigating the hinterland of Varno, and a local lass that he took a shine to, Aldous was frail and slow to mature in comparison to the humans that he lived amongst. Because of his non-human heritage, he was shunned from an early age, and sometimes bullied, by the superstitious locals who viewed him as little better than a Changeling. After one particularly vicious beating, Aldous cried himself to sleep, and had a strange dream - a being of unimaginable age and power whispered to him from beyond the stars, promising him assistance if he but opened his mind...

...From that day forward, whilst he was still shunned (this time for very different reasons), Aldous had a companion to look after him; something which made life that little bit more bearable.

This gave him the confidence he needed to seek his own path in life, and he struck out on his own, to seek his fortune away from the small-minded pettiness of his home-town...

Of course, Aldous does not realise that he is acting as a conduit, allowing an alien intelligence to maintain a presence in this reality; an intelligence that undoubtedly has its own agenda. However, since it requires him to maintain the link, it remains a devoted companion...

Aldous encountered the Professor many years ago, when he was researching the nature of the Dark Tapestry, and whilst Aldous himself was unable to provide much insight, his Companion proved to be a treasure-trove of information, and a working friendship quickly developed between Aldous and the Professor; in fact, the Professor was even able to put in a good word at the Caliphas Observatory for Aldous, which gave him the foot in the door he needed to pursue a life spent gazing heavenward, interpreting the subtle dance of the stars...

He was deeply saddened to learn of the death of his friend and mentor, and vowed to make the perilous journey necessary to participate in the funeral; the final act of loyalty and friendship that he can provide to someone who had meant so much to him...
