Background:

Akhom’s parents were itinerant Osiriani adventurers, his father Wayullah a wizard and his mother Ruqiyah a paladin, both of them devotees of Sarenrae. Fleeing some troubled past in Osirion, the pair travelled into Katapesh, spending sometime in the north, before heading south to Fort Longjaw. There they saw out the heat of high summer, aiding the fort’s inhabitants in defending the region.

When his parents came to Solku in 4694, they were veteran gnoll fighters after one season at Longjaw, holding a healthy hatred of the beasts. Akhom’s mother, though pregnant, gladly gave her vows to the Order of the Dawn Vigil, as did his father.

Once Akhom was born, Ruqiyah became captain of a scouting unit, one that his father would often accompany. Akhom was often left in the care of the wider community of Sarenrae’s people, and he grew up proud of his parents, the brave gnoll hunters. Lady Chanar Cynore (only just made the leader of the Dawn Vigil) was distant but approved of the boy, seeing him grow tall, strong, and true. Akhom gave his heart fully to Sarenrae at an early age, following gladly his parents’ example.

When Akhom was seven, his world came crashing down. His parents were out scouting, when they ran across a huge gnoll army – the army that was to start the Seige of Solku. Wayullah was shot by advanced gnoll archers as the scouting patrol attempted to fall back. Ruqiyah, though grief-stricken, summoned the strength to recover Wayullah’s body and lead her patrol home to Solku safely.

Akhom was distraught to see his father dead and his mother in such heart-rending grief. However, when his mother pulled herself together and began assisting with organising the defences of the city, he too rallied, for the first time feeling real hatred. Desperate to contribute to the defence of Solku, Akhom attempted to grab a shortbow and take to the wall with some of the older children. His parents’ close friend Neelak, skilled instructor of the bow, stopped him, telling him to flee with the other small children and elderly, but Akhom wouldn’t have it. Understanding that the boy would get himself into serious trouble if his desperation wasn’t channeled, Neelak gave him a small hand crossbow, swiftly instructing him in its use, and bidding him to get to the wall away from the imminent hand-to-hand combat.

Akhom survived the siege, though his mother died alongside the valiant knights of Iomedae in the Battle of Red Hail. Neelak also survived, and took it upon himself to become Akhom’s unofficial guardian, though many members of the Dawn Vigil were simultaneously proud of the boy and full of sorrow at his loss. A phase of rebuilding began for Solku, and also for Akhom.

Akhom trained for 8 years with Neelak, who by this time was well beyond his fortieth summer. The young devotee of Sarenrae grew tall, quick and strong, his skill matched by his faith in his shining goddess. While the fires of hatred burned within him, Akhom remained a generally cheerful and enthusiastic boy, struck by only occasional bouts of moodiness and depression. He clove to the teachings of Sarenrae though: that rage and hate were debilitating weaknesses, and that only through temperance, compassion, and strength of mind, soul and body could the light of Sarenrae shine forth.

As he approached his coming of age, his sixteenth birthday, Akhom began to feel a restlessness grow in his soul. Neelak noticed something was awry with the youth, but said nothing, hoping that Akhom would talk when he was ready.

A week before his birthday, Akhom had a dream. An angel of Sarenrae spoke to his sleeping mind, laying out choices before him. A whirlwind of possible futures spun before him, many filled with darkness, all filled with death, but typically he found that the paths with the easiest choices ended up darker than the paths that required his sacrifice and struggle. As he woke, clear memory of his dream faded, but it seemed his sleeping mind had made a decision – he must leave Solku.

It took a couple of days, but Akhom went to Neelak, explaining his decision. Neelak struggled to understand the boy’s reasoning to begin with, and disagreed, reminding Akhom that he was sure to be fully inducted into the Dawn Vigil soon after coming of age. Finally, however, Neelak realised that Akhom’s decision wasn’t based in reason – it was based in faith. Akhom felt that Sarenrae was calling him elsewhere, and though he had no idea where, why, or what for, he had to go.

Walking away from his conversation with Neelak, Akhom looked towards the brightly burning sun, asking his goddess to give him a sign, a reassurance that he was making the right decision, and some idea of which path to take. Lowering his eyes back to earth, he rubbed them, trying to restore his bedazzled vision – and crashed right into a dwarf.

Akhom knew Gruthic as a trader that visited Solku annually with his family, and he had known the dwarf since shortly after his parents passed in the Siege. After apologising and speaking briefly with Gruthic, it became apparent that Gruthic’s situation was different than the other times they’d met. The dwarf was still trading, but was now out on his own, and in some ways was finding life a little tougher for it. After some congenial arguing over the respective merits of Torag and Sarenrae, Akhom told Gruthic of his plans to leave Solku.

Gruthic and Akhom left Solku shortly after the youth officially became a man in the eyes of Sarenrae. Though Akhom is not yet inducted into the Dawn Vigil, he still carries his squire's buckler, and goes with the blessing of the Order.

Personality:

Akhom is a devotee of Sarenrae, but his personality is shaped by his faith rather than wholly dictated by it. Despite his implacable hatred for gnolls, he is a lover of life, and does not kill easily or without reservation. He is also a typical youth - he has a hunger for experience, including things such as thrills, stories, the acceptance/admiration of older folks, and to discover himself in relation to such adult situations as romance, drinking and other recreational drugs, and group decision-making.
He is swifter to laugh than complain, and his anger usually passes quickly, and is difficult to incur in the first place. He has, however, issues with losing loved ones as a result of his early experiences, and, youth that he is, tends to express his fear in terms of anger.

Appearance:

Akhom stands tall at 6'3", and his naturally rangy build is corded with long, lean muscles. He keeps his head and face closely shaved, and his features are strong and handsome. His skin is a deep chocolate brown, as are his eyes. His most striking feature is his large, strong, perfectly formed teeth. For one of such a young age, he moves with a remarkably feline grace.
Akhom's voice is a deep baritone, smooth, warm and resonant. It tends to add to the illusion of him seeming older than he really is on first appraisal.
