Description:
19 yo | 5' | 110 lbs
Aja is a young woman who might be considered pretty – petite, firm brown skin, and red-brown hair. But her skin is drawn too tightly over her bones. Her sightless, milky eyes are eerie but made worse in conjunction with the scores of ashen pictograms tattooed across her face. It is generally agreed upon by her neighbors that the series of them that appear like tears pouring from her eyes and dripping down her cheeks are the most unsettling of all. It’s likely why she is sometimes called the Banshee of Blacklake. Then there is the pronounced limp, the shuffling gait, and the constant tapping of her cane – both as a source of support and to prevent the blind woman from bumping into things. Tap Tap Tap, at all hours of the day or night, Tap Tap Tap. But something about Aja is captivating (CHA:18) to many of the locals. She speaks and people just listen… whether she is making her eerie prognostications, laughing at odd moments, or having conversations with – most people fervently hope – just herself. Backstory:
Aja was once a normal girl, the second daughter and third child of a well-heeled family with a pedigree and bloodline that was sorcerous – prosperously so. For nine generations, Endymions had been born and raised in Neverwinter. They were as woven into the fabric of the community as anyone could hope to be. Though it was a bit boring for the gossips, no serious scandal had ever been attached to their name. Nine generations of affluent, boring, and scandal-less came to a sudden end when the Endymion family home and three adjacent structures vanished in a roiling, utterly silent, ball of silver fire that lit up the city that night. Aja was eight… and also the only survivor pulled from the wreckage of the shattered home. One of her legs was ruined despite the best efforts of the healers and her eyes… they were burned out from the horrifying brilliance they witnessed. An editor at Neverwinter Nights pithily dubbed the event the ‘Fall of the House of Endymion’. In the year after the destruction, rumors began to swirl, each more baseless than the last. Was it a magical experiment gone wrong? Was it an attack from a jealous business rival? Was it a family murder/suicide? Was it the work of devils? Was it the Gods’ punishment for a debased family that secretly cannibalized the city’s orphans? Aja was out of the hospital by the time that last rumor made it onto the pages of Neverwinter Nights… that foul rag as she had begun to think of the paper. As one of the newer of the city’s orphans, it was a particularly cutting claim. But she had little time to dwell on much other than her own survival. The explosion had taken much of the family’s wealth and then there were the competing business interests who wanted pieces of the family business and injured people wanting reimbursement from the estate, and others who thought the family funds should be used to build something new on the ruins to ‘give back’ to the community… The carrion birds and vultures swooped in while Aja recuperated. And when they had picked the bones clean, there was very little left for the blind and lame girl – a modest inheritance at best, if she could manage to hold onto it. And so Aja became a ward of the city which offered little but an infrequent meal and sometimes a relatively safe place to sleep for the night. She focused on the present, burying the recollections of her happy youth and the mystery that ended it all. It was a couple years later when her gifts began to manifest that she started to ponder about that night. Are my gifts sorcerous? If they aren’t, how did I get them? Why? Did something happen that night that made me what I am? Did someone do this on purpose? Aja had no answers… But, with the assistance of her ghostly friends, she’d get answers eventually. It was just a matter of time. Until then, she had to eat. Being a soothsayer as well as a non-judgmental local healer for people’s various ‘indiscretions’ paid the bills. Advancement Plans:
