About A'isha Al-Rajhi

Background:
Stepping down from the wagon, A'isha began to make her way through the town of Ravengro. She concentrated slightly, though nothing registered. She could not sense the presence of any undead. This had better be worth it. There was nothing left she wanted to go back to in Katheer. Nothing at all.

A'isha Al-Rajhi was born to parents of the clergy of Sarenrae, and raised in the city of Katheer in Qadira. As her parents were high priests, they had a higher quality of life than other members of the faith. They took their obligations very seriously, as their position required greater dedication and devotion than was expected from a regular member of the clergy.

As A'isha was given all that she desired, she had time to pursue other interests that would not be otherwise available. She was often present when the merchant came to take orders for items that would later be blessed for church use. It was in this way that she first met Alek Oltorev. He was the son of the bodyguard of the merchant who came to sell. They quickly became friends and spent a lot of time together. Her father soon came to the conclusion that this man would be responsible for protecting his daughter (being a high priest made her a target from various people looking to extort her parents). He was hired and charged with A'isha's safety. This man became her favorite guard due to his son, Alek. Over the next few years she would spend many hours with him as she had few friends due to her parents status (they were quite selective of whom they allowed to associate with her).

At the age of 15, A'isha's parents began to groom her to eventually become a faithful cleric of Sarenrae. She was instructed on religion and nobility and how they would pertain to her role in the church. A'isha gladly accepted this since her family and the church were of the utmost importance to her. Little did she know that she would soon have an experience which would alter her path in life.

That year, one of the city leaders died, and her parents made preparations for the funeral. A'isha attended the event as this would be her first time witnessing her parents officiate in the rites of burial. She watched dutifully since she would eventually be performing such duties when she came of age. During the ceremony, she noticed Alek fidgeting and looking quite distracted. After the the event was completed and the people were leaving, he practically ran to another part of the mausoleum. She followed to see what was wrong. It turns out that his father wanted him to become a bodyguard as he had, but Alek wanted to become a city guardsman.

They were discussing this when they heard some sounds coming from a nearby chamber. Investigating, they discovered a man with odd-looking robes standing near a burial table with a dead body on it. The man was making some strange gestures and speaking words she did not understand. This went on for a few minutes when, impossibly, the body began to move! It stood next to the table and remained there. The man spoke again, and this time she could understand him.

"Guard this room. If you see anyone, kill them. And don't let them escape." With that said, the man departed. The zombie remained motionless while watching for intruders.

A'isha knew she had to do something about it, but wasn't sure what. Looking around, she spied a ceremonial sword with a suit of armor in the hallway. Grabbing it, Alek and A'isha dispatched the zombie. He was upset, frightened and wanted to go home. Once he was gone, she put the sword away and made her way back to where her parents were. What she didn't know was that a fast zombie was nearby, and had been too far away to assist the first. It followed her to the chamber where her parents were finishing the final burial preparations.

She stopped to examine the tools that they used for the wrapping of the body.

Turning, A'isha intended to ask a question. Before she could say anything, the zombie had already moved across the room and was about to strike her father. She watched in horror as Father reeled from the blow into the table nearby. The zombie pressed the attack and continued to hit him with blow after blow. Mother was screaming hysterically. Coming to her senses, A'isha bolted from the room to grab the sword she had used just minutes before. She ran back to the chamber to save her parents.

She was not prepared for what she saw. The room was covered in the remains of Mother and Father. She was horrified by what she just witnessed. The zombie turned and made for her. It was going to kill her, it was...."No. NO!!!"

With a strength that belied her size, she swung the sword in a blind rage. The zombie tried to attack but was stopped by her furious swings. She yelled in anger as she cut the abomination down.

Then, just as suddenly as it had begun, it was over. She stood there panting heavily staring at the corpse of the thing that attacked her. Hearing a noise behind her, she turned while holding the sword defensively.

"There is no need for that, I am not your enemy." It was a Paladin. And judging by his symbol, he was of Sarenrae. The adrenaline subsided and she began to cry.

"They're gone. What will I do? I have nowhere to go!" she sobbed.

The kindly paladin took her in his arms and held her gently. "Easy now, you're safe."

That night she stayed at the temple. She cried and cried till she couldn't cry any more. Finally, sleep came. But not like any sleep she had had before. Her dreams were nightmares. She was trying to save her parents, but never quite making it. The zombie kept killing A'isha over and over. As the dream repeated itself for the last time, the zombie came at her once more to kill her again. This time, something was different. There was a light in the room that was not present before. Looking down, A'isha saw that it was coming from a symbol she was wearing. The symbol of Sarenrae, and it was glowing brightly. Looking up as the horrific creature made its way to her, she held out her sword and a bright beam of light shot out from the tip, striking the zombie in the chest. The room was filled with a bright light for a brief instant, and then subsided.

Blinking, A'isha looked around and found the zombie gone. Her parents were standing in the room with her.

"Mother, Father?" running, she went to hug her father only to pass through him. She stopped and turned to him. "Why? Why us? We did nothing to deserve this fate!" she yelled.

"No, we didn't. Bad things happen sometimes. But you are still here. Sarenrae can use your strength. You have what you need to survive. You know where to look. You have but to turn your head and...."

And then she awoke with tears streaming down her face. She went to the paladins and told them of her desire to serve Sarenrae cleanse the world of all the undead abominations. This was her way to honor both her parents and her deity. Her path had begun.

It wasn't until 12 months later that a man came calling. He called himself Professor Petros Lorrimor, and he was interested in her experience with the undead. He knew just the right questions to get her to remember all the details of her encounter. Every bit of it came flooding back. This time though, she was preparing. Her training in the divine would assist her in her efforts to cleanse the world of them. The man was very insightful. He gave her information about their weaknesses, their strengths, and helped her to better understand how to fight them.

Over the next 5 years he would keep in contact with her, telling her of some of his travels. He continued to tell her about the undead and his experiences abroad. He was a most unusual man.

It wasn't until about 4 months ago that his communication stopped. She hadn't heard from him, which she found unusual given a man of his social talents. One final letter came. Professor Petros Lorrimor was dead. It gave instructions to make way to Ravengro in the nation of Ustalav. As her training was complete, she gathered her belongings and stepped out to make her way in the world.

"It will be a long trip." she thought as she boarded the caravan. "A long trip indeed."

Interested in the conditions of the run-in and the means by which you avoided death or injury, he met with you and maintained frequent correspondence until several months ago. The scars of your experience and his continual reminders of the encounter prompted you to hone your skills lest you someday face the same type of creature again. The professor assisted you in this endeavor, providing you with insight into the anatomy and defenses of the creature that attacked you.
Years of study have improved your combat effectiveness against your chosen foe. Choose a non-humanoid creature type (and subtype if outsider). You gain a +1 bonus on damage rolls against creatures of this type.
