Profile
Aemelya was born to human parents deep within the shadow plane. Her parents, merchants by trade, led their caravans through the ever-shifting ether that separates the material and shadow planes. Her mother was ruthless in her pursuit of coin, while her father had some reservations. It was during one of these journeys that Aemelya was born; all her time in the shadow plane left her infused with the essence of shadows. Her father blamed her mother for the damage to their child, as it was her idea to do business in the shadow plane. To preserve their marriage and never remind them of their rift, Aemelya was left behind to die. The only thing was, Aemelya survived. Concealed and protected by the shadows, after three days and nights, she was found by a traveling merchant clan and adopted, not as a daughter, but as a worker. As soon as she was old enough to work, she was sent to pack and organize crates with her peers. The merchant clan moved the working children from caravan to caravan as they were need, so even though she was surrounded by "aunts" and "uncles" and "sisters" and "brothers", she never formed any lasting relationships.
Instead, she found company in the shadows. To be precise, her company was the shadows. They were always there when she needed them, and they seemed to respond to her. The fact that shadows are fluid and coy only added to their appeal. Although her peers spent lots of time in the shadow plane, they were still only humans and half elves, goblins and dwarves; they didn't have quite the same connection as she did.
Her connection would soon be tested on a routine caravan trip to the material plane, as the perma-winter began to set on the material plane. The merchant clan sought to profit off the food shortages by shipping in food from the shadow plane, but the scheme backfired. Hungry bandits ambushed the caravan, killing many merchants and guards. As the bandits began to burst into the cargo hold, Aemelya hid in a crate in the corner. Although the raiders searched every nook and cranny for food, they never reached Aemelya's crate; the shadows had hidden her once again.
Once the bandits had left, Aemelya was left to wander alone in the wilderness, but by chance or fortune, she was found by a mysterious fortune-teller. She was brought once again to a caravan, this time headed towards her destiny.
Appearance
The influence of the shadow plane is obvious on Aemelya's appearance. Her skin is an unhealthy pale color and her hair is darker than midnight. She's dressed in a respectable children's robe, nothing more than necessary for moving crates. She's quite small for her age and seems to blend into the background when there isn't much light.
Personality
Without having real parents, Aemelya doesn't have very strongly defined morals, only the sheer tenacity for survival. She's quite shy and fickle, just like the shadows. Despite that, she's curious about her background and her identity; this natural curiosity sometimes overcomes her natural instincts.
