Are there any homebrew Pathfinder classes for the Warmachine Warcaster? I've somewhat made my own version using the summoner as a base, but I'm not the best at this kind of stuff so I would appreciate any nudge in the right direction

I've been using a Defense system ever since d20 Star Wars was first released. I've kept it basic:

1. Armor Bonus from Armor and Natural Armor is converted to DR. They stack. However, DR maxes out at a total of 10, unless a class feature grants natural DR which allows DR to exceed 10.
2. Defense Bonus equates to the BAB of the Character.
3. Only 1/2 Defense bonus applies to touch attacks.
4. DR from Armor and Natural Armor only applies to spells and spell-like effects if the target succeeds at there Save to the spell or spell-like effect, but only 1/2 of the DR applies. Exception: DR DOES NOT APPLY TO TOUCH SPELLS, unless it's DR gained from something akin to the Barbarians class ability.
5. Magical bonus to Armor applies to both the Defense and the DR, even against damage from spells.
6. Critical Threats, bypass the DR granted by Armor and Natural Armor.
7. Light Armor costs as listed. Medium Armor costs 3 times listed cost. Heavy Armor costs 10 times listed cost.
8. If a character succeeds at a Feint or uses the "Aim/Hone In" action, using a move action, they get a single attack that if it hits, critical threat or not, bypasses DR granted by Armor and Natural Armor.
9. Defense does not apply if denied Dexterity bonus.
10. Shields provide a Deflection Bonus to Defense.

This is what it has evolved into after many a session over the last 7 or 8 years. It works for my games. I hated the AC bonus thing since 2E. I always thought armor should provide DR rather than make it harder to hit, especially when you start getting into armor that weighs 20, 30, 40 or more pounds.

So this looks like a system I would like to run. I'm trying to find some hybrid of the Savage Worlds Wounds system to incorporate with Pathfinder and this looks promising. Has anyone else tried this, and did it work out? Is it balanced for mages and other light armored PCs?

anyone have any advice on incorporating a wounds system in place of HP all together? for example, each PC dies if their wounds total 4 and it would take over 10 points of damage to cause one wound, 20 points of damage to cause a second wound etc... If somebody has tried this would you let me know how it worked out?

I really like your defense system, thanks for sharing

Setting off tomorrow morning, arriving early afternoon.

* Looks like we're all set for Call of Cthulhu, run by my friend, at 1730 or so. Pre-gens provided. If you want to get in to the game please meet up in the "upper lobby" (above the bar/grill, near where the registration desk will be on Friday). Not sure exactly how many slots are available but I'm thinking four beyond the two already filled. If a bunch more potential players show up maybe we'll break off and create another group.

* Star Wars: Escape from the Death Star will take place starting at 1800-1830 on Saturday during the banquet and may continue until the wee hours, depending on how things go. I'll hopefully have ten pre-gens to choose from, with the intention of having up to about eight people actually play. This year the hangar bay will feature my newly-built Firespray-31 patrol craft!

Looking forward to seeing you guys there.

Is this game happening Thursday night or Friday night? If it's Thursday, I'd like to play if you're good with a newb to CoC although I've read through some of the basic rules

I have PFS characters running the gamut of levels or I would gladly run something if people can come up with a mod they'd like to play.

Would anyone be up for running 2-04 Shadows Fall on Absalom?

Edit:

If you want to get a game in tomorrow before the dinner contact me off list tonight or in the morning tomorrow. I'll see about herding some cats.

I'm also looking at going to the meet and eat. I could play tonight, but it might be too short notice to get something together so quickly.

If people want to meet and grab food, that might be fun, but games are sometimes harder to organize.

true true

anybody want to play tomorrow (thur) during the day?

I'm still up for a game tonight if there is enough people to play something

I'm really early for Paizocon and would love to get my game on. If others are here and looking to play a game during the day, post here. I'm pretty content playing any RPG available (as a player).

I can GM a Pathfinder or Savage Worlds game as well.

If enough gamers respond we will need to pick a place, but we have the time: noon, Thursday June 9

Hi,
A few years ago a fellow gamer mentioned to me an alternate rules system for leveling up where character level maxed out at 6th level. I believe you then gained perks as you advanced, but it kept the 'power curve' pretty flat.

Is there anyone out there that has heard of this or knows where I could find more details about it. I've searched the web but not having any luck so far.

I just want to appologize to anyone who had to read my inappropriate post last night; I took some sleeping medication and should have gone to sleep, not type on the computer.

I'm truly sorry and very embarassed for my offensive language

Well, even I have to say no. Alchemist uses inqredients like spell-casters do, the potions acts in same way as spells do but they don´t share the same qualities in this case thus they used the wording here 'they are almost identical to teh spell in everyway"

About the formula: they do indeed write them up and study like spellbooks... but if now just we say to something like fantasy / real-life situation based-> recognize spell-> you need spellcraft=trained only skill and chemistry = high level mathic (well depends) and not everyone can do it, write formulas done etc without training and understanding

I see your point here but I will have to say also no. It just wont add up´to magic or spells

some interesting points; I'm not decided either way, but I could still see myself accepting a good story on why an alchemist/ fighter could make an eldritch knight or something....

I think their is enough refferences to alchemists possesing magical powers to make this statement a little naive, or at least anything but clear cut facts. RAW- The Alchemist uses his level as the caster level to determine any effect based on a caster level"

Any other thoughts? We have one comment from the extreme side against it, any others who view it less black and white.

I personally think the alchemist is more magical that just a chemist with glass vials. The book does state "the alchemist doesn't actually cast spells, but they are almost identical to the spell in everyway. I'm looking for more feedback, I'm not convinced either way, I just know I don't share the black and white view froma previous post.

The feats are a work in progress, but the summoner and eidolon are pretty solid.

Not that this is correct but using herolab it gives a CR of 15. I think by looking at the guidelines in the Bestiary it actually looks like a CR 10 or 11 to me.

Thank you!

Well, I just looked at a Black Dragon, Ancient at CR 16, and it looks like it would slaughter my 15HD eidolon, so I'm thinking a 15HD eidolon might be more like a CR 14 or 15.

I'm running a 'capture-the-flag' one shot encounter for five PCs who are making their own monsters based on the eidolon build for a 20th level summoner. Just looking for what a fair fight (what CR) would be.
I'm somewhat new to this so I'd appreciate any advice. As of now I'm going to go light (48,000 XP worth of monsters) on the party becuase I don't want to slaughter them, and if it's too easy I'll add the 'invisible' reinforcements.

Aybody know what an Eidolon's CR would be? I'm running a one-shot encounter with a party of Eidolons and I'm having trouble determining what CR the eidolons/party would be (so I can determine the appropriate encounters). We are using Eidolons based on a 20th level summoner, and from looking at the Bestiary, my best guess is a CR17. The few I built are really high on the charts for atk, dmg, hp, AC, but it just doesn't feel like they should be a CR 18 or higher. Any thoughts? I know there is not a right answer here, because every eidolon is built differently, but I was hoping there was some mechanic in place someone discovered that is smarter than me.

5 people marked this as FAQ candidate. Staff response: no reply required.

I'm pretty sure I'm right but I got voted 7 against 1 by my PCs so I folded like a rookie, but I wasn't sure so I usually side with the players until I know

So the question: If a creature has DR 10/ evil, does a attack from an evil creature bypass this reduction just because it's evil? I thought it had to be a specifically aligned evil weapon from spell, sla, enhancement, etc...

I do understand that any weapon or attack that is equivalent to +5 or greater overcomes the alignment DR.
If anyone could answer Y/N for the following:

*Touch attack from evil creature? (i believe any touch by-passes DR)
*Natural attack from evil creature E.G. bite/claw etc?
*weapon attack from an evil creature?

Thanks

It was never clear to me before if the alchemist suffers any arcane failure due to armor. I know they are only proficient with light armor at the start, but could they take armor prof feats, or would they need to worry about faliure %? Ayone know

Thanks for the great info;

Can the Alchemist use his discoveries to
1. make a bomb that has Explosive Bomb and Precise Bomb?
2. Explosive bomb and Potent Bomb
3. Precises bomb and Potent Bomb

I'm trying to choose a discovery and if you can't combine any of these it changes my strategy

Thanks; it makes since, just hadn't noticed anything like that before

oh and one more thing, most of the other monsters that have the deeper darkness spell-like ability, specify under senses that they can see in all darkness including deeper darkness

Can a Shadow Demon see in deeper darkness? I'm confused because in the Bestiary, the Shadow Demon can cast deeper darkness at will, but under the senses it shows darkvision 60'. The RAW say even a creature with darkvision can not see in deeper darkness. It does have the blind-fight feat, but that's not the same as being able to see. I have plenty of common-sense solutions for the problem, I just wanted to know if I'm missing something, it's a game-balance thing, or if it's a mistake.
cheers

I'm embarrassed as a GM I don't know this answer, but I need help so I'll just ask. The following situation is actually the first time this has come up in either of my campaigns. It's come up since we've been getting a feel for the new APG and the group thought it would be fun if I assigned a class from the APG to each of the six PCs. I have a Wizard 4/Witch 1, and a Sorcerer 4/Summoner 1. I'm confused on if the W/W can cast burning hands at CL 5, or if it's just CL 4 from the wiz and CL 1 if from the witch.

My question: If a character has multiple classes, specifically in spell-casting classes, how do you figure there Caster Level (CL)? Does it matter if the classes cast from the same spell list for example a Sorcerer 4/ Wizard 4. Since they have the same spell options to choose from would the CL be 8, or just 4?

My gut is telling me you treat the classes completely seperate and you have spells known, #/day, and CL independant. Any help is appreciated

I am aware there is a Pathfinder DM Screen available and i may order that instead if the game takes off and I am DMing for long enough, but this is as a short term solution.

Thanks.

I use the PF official DM screen and really like it. I've printed out a few charts that I tape onto the screen (top of the paper only, so I can still flip the paper up and read whats below). My personal modifications are: Table 8-2 Actions in combat on PF p183. This tells you what type of action it is an if it provokes an Atk of Op. This is a full page table and I cover the misc tables of the screen (XP chart, treasure, object hardness/break). Remeber to only tape the top so you can still reference the below materials. I also made a chart for Cover and Concealment that I place over the fly and wind effects (I hardly ever use those but could see a need at higher level campaigns). I also hand write in perm marker modifiers to the skills that are not included on the charts

hope that helps

Ah, I just read it. Interesting class concept.

Anyways, this is how I would change it.

Hit Dice: D10

Stone Powers: Stonelords gain a Stone Power Pool equal to 1/2 their Stonelord level plus their constitution modifier at level 2. They may expend one use of this pool to activate any Stone Power that they know.

Earth Magic: As written, OR, the Stonelord may cast a spell from the Earth Domain of a spell level equal to at most 1/2 their Stonelord level.

Stoneskin: A Stonelord may use two uses of Stone Power to ignore the material component.

StoneShape: 3 times per day

Meld into Stone: once per class level + Con bonus

Earthquake: 3 times per day.

hope that helps :)

That might actually be enough to make it seem like a hard choice for me to PrC vs straight fighter. the 3/day earthquake seems high, but it is limited to 9th level, so I'm starting to think that's the point.

Thanks, I'll probably apply most of these adjustments.

That's because you are looking at it the wrong way. You should be comparing the lich template to 240,000gp worth of magic items, since that's what you could create with 120,000gp. The phylactery rules make it clear that the 120,000gp is the COST, not the MARKET PRICE. So I ask you all to look at it from that persepctive. What would a straight wizard with his many bonus item creation feats be able to make with 120,000gp and 6 months? How does that now compare to the template?

...I'm amazed that nobody has responded to this despite the fact it is, like, the 5th time it's appeared in the thread.

Oh dear god that is really a silly way to look at it. Let me just put that comment into perspective and make sure I understood it correctly. So your logic is basically saying that if you buy a a 12-pack of beer for $10 at the store, because you could sell each beer for $2 a bottle, you actually just spent $24? Please tell me I'm misunderstanding you.

The Bestiary has guidelines for using Monsters with CR's of 1 or higher as characters, and it uses a 'LA' like system that has built-in buyoff.

Every 3rd level actually grants 2 levels to the PC, up until 1/2 the CR is bought back (in this example at level 20 RavingDork's Sorceress would have 19 levels and hit dice of Sorceress and 1 'level' of Lich template)

Actually... that is not the case. Every 3rd level granting 2 levels is for RACIAL HD. RD's example is a template monster. Big, and significant difference.

kyrt-ryder wrote:

Erm... hello mcfly... +2 CR means that he'd be 2 whole spellcasting levels below an equivalent level non-templated sorcerer. A WHOLE SPELL LEVEL behind until I hit ECL 20 (sorcerer level 18, and no capstone ever)

Sorry, but I'd say that, without a specific character concept (such as the frail and near-death concept RavingDork is working with) I would turn down the Lich template in favor of better spellcasting.

Seriously 3bm, the Lich template is far from broken at +2 CR when you include the monetary cost. Hell it's 'possible' that the +2 CR balances all on it's own without the cost, although the fact that Paizo's bestiary rules allow the 1/2 buyoff of CR means the 120,000 spent creating the phylactery is probably needed.

that's funny nancy; I've read some of your other posts and have yet to find one I agree with, so I guess we just see things completely different.

So if your statement is this: "spending 120,000gp and 4 months game-time making a phylactery is sufficent to balance out all of the abilities gained from the lich template in the Pathfinder SRD" then I would say you are completely wrong.

What 'balances' the extra power out is the effort required to actually earn the template in the first place - i.e. it's a reward for moving steadily towards a goal and making sacrifices to achieve it - from the sounds of it, more than just money/time sacrifices. And a PC lich suffers from problems that NPC liches do not - how many PCs are regarded as undead abominations by most of the world? It's great for Mr-I-Live-Alone-In-A-Dungeon-Doing-Ageless-Research Lich...for Adventuring Lich, not so much. Heck, I'm not even sure if you can suppress the Fear Aura...

Two...Would you allow a PC to gain the Lich template?

Three...Would the Group you play in have a problem with a PC gaining a powerful template?

Yes or no explain it you wish but please answer the question first.

1) No, as a PC, in my games if you have any stat below 3 you will suffer constant consequences and this shows obvious signs of blatant powergaming bordering on munchinism

2) Yes! I would not at all be opposed to allowing such a thing as long as the requirements were met and the mechanical adjustment is made to balance out the LA. I would most likley have them rebuild the character from the ground up working with the player to take into account the abilities.

3) No. As long as it does nothing to overshadow the campaign, dominate combat or roleplay opportunities they would have little issue.

At the risk of not being original; I actually agree with these 3 answers exactly

.

Regarding the "value" and "cost" of becoming a Lich...

The PRD already has rules on "Monsters as PCs". You will, at the very least, need to count the CR increase as class levels:

"Treat the monster's CR as class levels when determining the monster PC's overall levels."

Note that the bestiary entry has the 11th level human necromancer (normally a CR 10) as CR 12. 11th level + CR 2 is 13, and -1 for being an NPC.
So as a player, you'd be at least 13th level.

The DM has two choices for this:

1. At 11th level, you become a Lich and are considered 13th level. You gain a reduced amount of experience, or stop leveling (if you play without experience) until the other players catch up.

2. You start leveling slower now, taking longer to reach 11th level, so that by the time you get there and can become a Lich, your allies are now 13th level and the APL remains even amongst you.

I understand that a lot of time and energy was spent and you gave up a lot of magic items/power to get this. The problem is that all of those things (other than the money instead of magic...

There is absolutely no way you can possibly even fathom thinking that becoming a lich in all it's power is balanced by applying the +2 CR for a PC. To imply that, this is how Paizo has set it up is frankly very insulting to Paizo because they were stating that is a very simple model to use, but to be used with caution. The Template monsters do not all have equal abilities and to treat them all with the +2 CR rule for a PC is wrong. You can do whatever you want, I just hope your GM pulls the BS card.

What are the power levels of the rest of them? You are jumping to conclusions based on limited information, and screaming "munchkin!!" without all the facts.

The op has deliberatly gimped himself for half the game (If this even makes it to 20th level that is) for a DM approved payoff, that will certainly gain him plenty of new enemies, and new problems. I don't know about your campaign, but there are very few (as in none) lich's casually strolling around my towns and cities, or kipping down to the market for a shiny new toy. Dunno, something about an ambulatory skeleton just puts people off, who'da thunk it?

lol, the lich walking down the street does paint a picture. I actually have a player who's goal is to become a lich, and I've already told him I will support it. The party is only at 5th lvl and he knows not to expect anything until at least 11th lvl. I still don't have a solution for making it balanced, because I think the +2 CR was a very general rule Paizo put in the beastiary with all the appropriate warning signs saying 'not all monsters are created equal'

My reference to the shell game is simply that the post was originally requesting advice about the other players wanting to kill his PC. I'm not goig to re-read the threads but it seemed like a recurring theme which points to other PCs not wanting to play with respective PC. There are many possible reasons for this (to name a few) 1. The GM has failed at keeping the PCs balanced 2. The PC is annoying 3. The other PCs are unreasonable etc... My 'shell game' comment is based on this thread focusing on possibility #1, which I personally find the least likely reason.
