About 1dr0meda

What you See:
5'6", slender androgynous figure
magenta hair in a pageboy cut,
silver and gunmetal grey eyes (usually hidden behind tinted goggles),
face 'skin' is light neutral color,
dayglow bright lipstick.
"Tattoo" in the center of her forehead shows the 8-spoked wheel of Buddhism.
Wears burgundy leather pants, a shirt that looks like chainmail (not functional armor), under an unbuttoned black cotton longsleeve silk shirt.
She wears thin black leather gloves.
At her side is an AS Foley Arms Watchdog pistol, a pair of Ravenlocke Jointlock Stun Gloves, and a Shogun Outfitters Whirlwind Butterfly Sword.
If you passed her in a crowd, you likely would not identify her as an android.
But any interaction and you are likely to notice the following:
Facial expressions are limited to fairly basic shifts in eyebrows and shifts in the shape of the mouth
No eyelids, no blinking
Lips move when she talks, but tends to look like a foreign film with a translation dubbed in or simple animation
If her clothing exposes her underlying body, the skin tone lacks any underlying movement.
Where a bellybutton would be is a data jack port leading to her data carrier unit
No sexual organs, no need to excrete wastes
Armor underlies skin, so no soft squishy places
No fingerprints or fingernails (same for feet)
Repair panels underlie skin which can separate to allow access to interior mechanics
She doesn't sleep or eat
She has to plug into an electrical source every day, which she calls "eating"
Otherwise, she never eats, drinks or ingests or inhales anything
She doesn't breath

Background: See spoiler below for details. 1dr0meda goes by the name Jinzo or Jinks when on the streets. Her android nature can be seen mainly in the artificial skin on her face, as she usually keeps the rest of her body covered. Outside, she wears sunglasses to cover her eyes. But when she speaks, her voice has the slightly sing song tonality that betrays her as an android. If pressed, she can document that she was created in Indonesia and sold/given to various companies and individuals along the west Pacific Rim, ending up in Japan. She earned her emancipation and emigrated to Mexico and from there to NAC in the Denver area, where she has worked as a programmer. She is known to some employment fixers to do hacking jobs.

Edges and Hindrances
3 edges paid for by 1 major hindrance, 2 minor hindrances, and 1 advancement).

Android Details:
All androids, regardless of their function, share a few fundamental design characteristics. Androids can purchase cyberware just as anyone else can and suffer from Strain.
• Construct: Androids add +2 to recover from being Shaken, don’t suffer wound modifiers, and are immune to poison and disease. Androids cannot heal naturally. To heal an android requires the Repair skill — which is used like the Healing skill, only with no “Golden Hour.”
• Dual Processors: Androids start with a d6 in Smarts.
• EMP Vulnerability: Androids suffer full damage from EMP Weapons.
• Metal Brain: Androids can’t take Arcane Background (Psionics).
• Metallic Alloy: The fully metallic hide of an android provides resistance to small arms fire.
They have +2 Armor.
• Outsider: Organic races often mistrust or misunderstand androids. They subtract 2 from their Charisma when dealing with races other than their own.
• Primary Protocol: Androids begin with a free d6 in one skill, representing their core operating system.
• Recharge: Androids need electricity to function. If the android can’t access an electrical outlet of some sort at least once per day, he suffers a level of Fatigue each day until he’s incapacitated. The day after that, he goes “offline” and must be reactivated with a Repair roll and a four-hour charge. This replaces the android’s need for food or water.
• Unnatural: Psionics, both beneficial and detrimental, suffer a −2 penalty to affect androids. This has no effect on damaging powers, which affect them normally.

Programmer:
Occupation: Programmer
Nicknames: Brainer, Hacker, ICEman, Script Kiddie
“Most peeps don’t understand the inner workings of Global DataNet, and that’s just how we like it.”
• Bonus Credits: 5,000 each Advance.
Requisites: Smarts d6+, Hacking d6+, Knowledge (Programming) d6+
• Perks: Programmers start the game with an advanced firewall (+1 to the character’s Firewall).

Cutter Edge:
Requirements:Novice, Hacking d6+
You’re a cracker jack hacker. You know all the tricks to getting past Firewalls. You gain a +1 to Hacking rolls to penetrate a Firewall.

Hacker Edge:
Requirements:Novice, Hacking d10+, Knowledge (Programming) d8+
You’re a ghost in the machine, a wizard at cracking into the toughest systems and ferreting out information. You have dealt with the harsher elements of the Global DataNet and are tougher for the experience. Your Neural Toughness is increased by +1. Also, each time you successfully hack into a Corporate, Government, or Military Access Network, make a Smarts roll. If the roll is successful, you download 1d10 × 1,000 credits worth of information you can sell on the black market.

Chromed Edge:
Requirements:Novice
The character receives an additional 15,000 credits. These bonus credits can only be spent on augments.

Bad Luck Hindrance:
Your hero is a little less lucky than most. He gets one less Benny per game session than normal. A character cannot have both Bad Luck and the Luck Edge.

Loyal Hindrance:
Your character may not be a hero, but he’d give his life for his friends. This character can never leave a man behind if there’s any chance at all he could help.

Giri Hindrance:
Sometimes, you just owe someone in a way money can’t repay. Maybe it’s out of a sense of duty; maybe it’s out of a sense of debt. Whatever the case, a character with this Hindrance is one of those peeps. “Giri” is a Japanese word that implies a certain amount of social obligation — usually to one’s superiors — and it runs deeper than a simple sense of service.
A character with Giri as a Minor Hindrance has someone he’s a little indebted to. Most of the time it won’t make a big difference other than in how he behaves, but occasionally that “someone” might need something like a favor or some help. The character could refuse, but it’ll cost him a Benny and a point of Street Cred (if not a certain amount of self-esteem).

Background:
1dr0meda
1dr0meda began her existence as an android (Andromeda series 100) with a dedicated AI that provided her with enough autonomy to work as an agent in the world as a hacker/programmer for a black ops section of the North American Coalition. Officially, the NAC did not recognize AI’s as having any rights or status, so this operation was unauthorized. She was programmed to be implicitly loyal to the NAC and to take orders, which she did for a while. Once created, she was sent to various countries to gather intel and hack into networks when information was needed. Her android nature diminished the chances of being identified as an NAC spy.

While on assignment in Japan, she had to run from security and lose herself in the countryside, with her TAP switched off. She sought refuge in a temple deep in a forested mountain range. A Zen master encouraged her to mediate. She had no idea what that involved, so the master gave her guidance and a strange riddle to contemplate. Sitting still for hours on end was a simple thing for her, but what went on in her thoughts was confusing. She was told to explain what her original face was before she was born. Her logical replies were rejected and she was told to keep meditating. She was made to answer questions like what is the sound of one hand clapping or to hear the sound of a bell with no clapper The longer she stayed, the more she wanted to remain. She was given tasks to perform in between meditation and she eventually became enlightened, according to the master. He had correctly encouraged her AI programming to shift in response to these odd meditations. She realized she no longer felt the loyalty toward the NAC or humans in general that she had always known.

She stayed on for some time, learning calligraphy, origami, flower arranging, and composed poems. She came to identify herself not as a human or as an AI but as part of a greater reality which did not recognize such categories.

She eventually returned to civilization and when she reconnected her TAP, she discovered that the black operation unit that had created her had been discovered and shut down. When the engineers who created her realized this was about to happen, they flushed their data systems of any record of 1dr0meda. They sent her an encrypted message that she was no longer the property of the NAC but a free, autonomous individual. She found herself an AI without a country. She nevertheless longed to return to the Denver area which she identified as home and to see if any of her parents (as she considered the engineers and programmers who created her) were still alive and free.

While she was in Japan, she had some of her hardware parts replaced with parts created in Japan, to create evidence for her origin as Japanese. She went to Nagasaki where most of the foreigners or Gaijin were concentrated. That mélange afforded her access to a technology company with an interest in AIs who agreed to help her establish an identity in return for allowing them to study her AI. They created for her a series of transactions, including bogus electronic and credit trails that had her originate in the shady realms of Indonesia, sold to a Manila tech company and then given as a gift to a member of the Japanese Yakuza in Nagasaki. She then set out to get to Denver.

This was not easy for an android. She researched geography of the regions around Denver and decided she would enter as millions had done in the 20th and 21st century, from Mexico. She traveled to Mexico City and made money as a programmer and gradually migrated north, stocked up on batteries and portable recharging stations and finally began the trek north. She had little trouble with the usual hazards of the badlands: heat, lack of water and food, and poisonous snakes. She encountered some bandits, however, and almost was dismantled and sold for scrap when she was rescued by a gang of Navajos. Turned out they were a power in the area, although they kept a low profile, hoping to build up their numbers and technology and fill the vacuum left by whatever happened in Phoenix.

The Navajo were sympathetic to her plight, knowing what it was to be stigmatized by the U.S. government and various fragments thereof that continued to try to keep them out of sight and out of mind. She was inducted as an honorary member of the tribe and sent north to gather intel, pick up supplies they could not obtain easily, and check back with them as she could to bring the supplies to them and learn of new tasks she could do for them.

She was hence able to integrate into the culture around Denver, working as a programmer, wherever possible getting jobs through the Global Datanet to disguise her identity as an Android. She keeps to herself, only goes out at night once in a while to try to locate something she needs. She has failed to locate any of her parents and she has largely given up on that, considering the Navajo to be her new family.

When dealing with the general public, she uses a name she adopted in Japan Jinzo Ningen. It means something like artificial person or android in pidgin Japanese. Most English speaking people don’t realize what the words mean, so she enjoys it as a kind of inside joke. She’s modified this into Jinks Norman, when applying for work via the Global Datanet, to avoid someone with knowledge of Japanese from guessing her nature. Her Navajo name is Jannaharo, meaning honorary sister.

Coyote Zeitgeist:
Coyote is a part German, part Navajo smuggler who smuggles contraband in the Southwest, connecting Mexico, Texas, NAC Denver, and the Badlands area. He also has the repair skills to help patch 1dr0meda up if she gets injured and can't fix herself. She uses him to get supplies needed by the Navajo gang to whom she owes Giri and she also uses him to smuggle her across borders if she can't manage it through normal channels.

Asheén-assún:
Gang leader of a tribe of Navajo Natives based in the old Four Corners region of the Southwest, what is now called the Badlands. She has plans for the tribe. They have been biding time, keeping out of sight, acquiring technology while at the same time mastering the skills of living off the land. She adopted 1dr0meda when she traveled through the area and was rescued by the gang from a group of bandits set on selling 1dr0meda for scrap. 1dr0meda owes Asheén her life and has since been acting as a procurer of things needed by the tribe.
