The Land of Confusion - Black Dow's Golden Heroes Campaign

Game Master Black Dow

"Oh, Superman, where are you now
When everything's gone wrong somehow?
The men of steel, the men of power
Are losing control by the hour!"
- Land of Confusion, Genesis

The year is 1985. The place… The United Kingdom of Great Britain. Civil unrest is rife, the economic & political divide is widening as corporations clash with unions [1], and supernormal crime is on the rise as the authorities struggle to cope [2].

Queen Victoria’s reign is 148 years and shows little sign of ending. Her longevity has been attributed by the Royal Household to her connection to the United Kingdom and its Commonwealth lands [3], while sceptics and anti-royalists suggest she is, at best a facsimile, at worst something far more sinister [4].

In politics the Prime Minister has just returned to her seat at the head of the hardline Tory Government after recovering from an assassination attempt by a supernormal terrorist [5]. No longer just PM Margaret Thatcher, now, augmented by pioneering cybernetics, she truly is… The Iron Lady [6].

However its not all bad news: The Cold War seems to be thawing [7], the Home Computer revolution is underway, with Amiga, Atari, and Sinclair all entering the market. Bond is back on the big screen with The Hildebrand Rarity and A-ha are #1 with its theme: Hunting High & Low [8].

So it is within this “Land of Confusion” that a new wave of so called “superheroes” have arisen, ready to bring their justice to an unjust world… And while Tina Turner sings “We Don’t Need Another Hero”… The UK most definitely does!

[1]: Particularly bitter and antagonistic has been the Miner’s Strikes which pitted the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) against Margaret Thatcher's government over proposed pit closures which would see the industry replaced cheaper imported coal, oil, and gas, as well as nuclear power stations.
[2]: Since the E.A.G.L.E.S. (Extranormal Association of Government Law Enforcement Specialists) were officially posted Missing in Action in 1965, supernormal crime and unsanctioned activity has steadily begun to increase, with no organised counterforce remaining to police and combat them.
[3]: The Palace suggest she, like King Arthur before her, has mystical connections to the land.
[4]: Everything from an alien, immortal vampire or that the Royal Household have made a pact with a evil entity have all been suggested by the tabloid press.
[5]: Semtex, the self-styled “Exploding Man” is believed to be a supernormal terrorist bomber with ties to Irish dissident groups. He is still at large having somehow survived the Albion Hotel “suicide bombing” he carried out, with authorities and security agencies are rumoured to be following up on multiple potential sightings...
[6]: PM Thatcher survived through pioneering cybernetic implants in a collaborative project between StarTech of the USA and UK’s Sinclair Technologies; codenamed: Lazarus…
[7]: Recently appointed General Secretary Gorbachev has made overtures that an era of Glasnost (“openness”) with the West is something he wishes to pursue. However critics have suggested that the emphasis of the Cold War will merely shift to svéhnormal’nyj (supernormal) tensions.
[8]: 14th Bond Theme: Hunting High & Low by A-ha

Welcome to my game of Golden Heroes - UK based superhero RPG that is set in the mid-1980s. True to that era our game will mirror the themes of both the Bronze Age and Modern Age of Comic Books.
