Here's the deal...

Each PC can take four actions before the race, which they may use to improve Laboni’s vehicle or engage with the other racers (detailed below).

Improve Laboni’s Junkracer: PCs can spend an action to attempt a Computers, Engineering, Perception, or Physical Science check to find parts in the scrapyard and install them in Laboni’s racer. The GM should remind players struggling with the checks that PCs can use the aid another action to assist each other’s rolls. Weapons installed on the vehicle do not cause damage, but instead impose penalties to the target’s Piloting rolls for 1 round on a successful hit. Every successful check allows the PCs to pick one improvement from the list below to apply to the vehicle’s statistics; these bonuses are cumulative.

The vehicle’s base speed increases by 5 feet.
• The vehicle gains a +1 Piloting modifier.
• The vehicle gains a +1 attack modifier.
• The vehicle gains a +2 bonus to its EAC.
• The vehicle gains a +2 bonus to its KAC.
• The PCs install a basic energy weapon on the vehicle (imposes a
–4 base Piloting penalty on a hit).
• The PCs install a basic kinetic weapon on the vehicle (imposes a
–4 base Piloting penalty on a hit).
• The PCs upgrade a weapon to impose an additional –2 penalty to
enemy Piloting checks on a successful hit.

Investigating the Enemy: PCs can scout out their opponents with a Sense Motive check, or examine their opponents’ vehicles with an Engineering check. A PC can do this as part of making a prerace improvement skill check—the PC can take breaks during the improvement attempt and casually investigate one of the other racers. Otherwise, it costs a PC one of his prerace actions to converse with or examine all members of the competition. This check does not grant exact knowledge of an opponent’s statistics, but the GM can provide the PCs an idea of a driver’s skill or the associated vehicle’s strengths and weaknesses. On a successful check, the PC can ask one pertinent question about the pilot’s skill or about the vehicle the pilot is driving (or receives similar relevant information, if a player is unsure what he or she should be asking about).

Sabotage: PCs can attempt to sabotage the other vehicles, but they must dodge the eyes of everyone in the ramshackle stadium by spending a prerace action and attempting at a Stealth check. Failing this check raises the DC of future Stealth checks to sabotage vehicles. A PC who succeeds at this check can then attempt an Engineering check on one of the opposing vehicles to either reduce the vehicle’s speed by 10 feet or to impose a –4 penalty on one of the vehicle’s modifiers. If the PC is caught cheating in this manner, the offending PC is tossed out of the engine pit (no more turns). If the PCs are caught cheating again, it is grounds for the immediate disqualification of the entire team.

Socializing: PCs may also take this time to speak to the other pilots. During their prerace actions, they can forgo making an Engineering or Sense Motive check to examine and socialize with their opponents.The junkers are busy with their own preparations and do not have much time to talk. The GM should try to limit conversation to keep the game moving at a reasonable pace. Below is a listing of all the racers and their statistics, descriptions, and pertinent information for PCs attempting social skill checks with this action type.

Laboni, to her credit, is a skilled mechanic and has worked hard to pull together a decent racer from the piles of junk in Botscrap. Unfortunately, despite her heroic efforts, Laboni’s machine is not a match for vehicles that have been tested and improved over the course of multiple junkraces. She is not a pilot and has no experience with weaponry. If Laboni is going to have a chance, the PCs must help improve her vehicle.

Phantom returned to the group, discouraged by her failed attempt at sabotage. If she couldn't tamper with the enemy vehicles directly, she would work on the weapons with Shamshir.

Blake learns that, Nyzin is a reasonable pilot (+4) and her junker is known for bursts of speed (+20ft)... at the cost of becoming much easier to hit due to losing maneuverability (lasts for one round when activated.)

Blake finds and installs some stabilizers and a rad thruster taken off an old police chaser. (piloting, and speed)... Phantom finds some targeting servos and upgrades both weapons.

The vehicles set up at the starting line, they're set to take off given the signal.

Laboni is technically piloting her vehicle, but since she lacks the necessary racing
skills, she needs your help to compete!

The race uses a modified version of the vehicle chase rules, beginning on page 282
of the Starfinder Core Rulebook. Each turn of the race includes two phases: First, all the competitors fire their weapons at their chosen targets. Second, all the pilots attempt Piloting checks to determine their positions in the race. Any number of players can each control a single weapon during the firing phase, whereas only one player can act during the piloting phase. Actions during each of the race phases occur simultaneously, so there is no need to determine an order or initiative.

The game rounds go as follows -

Phase One: All racers may fire their
weapons by rolling a ranged attack roll against their target competitor’s vehicle EAC (for energy weapons) or KAC (for kinetic weapons), with a bonus or penalty equal to the vehicle’s attack modifier. Each weapon can be fired only once per round. Successful weapon attacks impose Piloting penalties (usually –4, unless the weapon was upgraded using one of the PCs’ prerace actions) that last for the rest of the turn.

Phase Two: Once all the weapons have been fired and the relevant Piloting penalties have been applied to each driver, each racer must attempt a DC 16 Piloting check, modified by the
vehicle’s Piloting bonus. Success means the vehicle moves at its full speed along the track (for the purposes of this race, assume a junkracer’s full speed is equal to the vehicle’s speed × 10). Failure causes the vehicle to crash into piles of junk on the sidelines, forcing it to move at half speed (the vehicle’s speed × 5) on the circuit; failure by more than 10 points causes the vehicle to get stuck and not move at all for that round.

The Track: The racing circuit is 3,000 feet long, and whoever crosses the finish line first is the winner. If multiple vehicles cross the finish line on the same round, whoever is farther across is the winner; if multiple vehicles tie for this distance, the race is a tie

Your racer, with Laboni in it sputters, for a second, but then with a burst of speed takes off!

Zvei targets Ratrod... he scores a direct hit. The energy from the shot seems to crackle and spread over the ship... Zvei sees Ratrod grin. (+4 pilot{ I'll assume Zveit shot the 1st energy weapon.

Phantom fires the kinetic weapon, with a roar of projectiles at Velocities, well armed junkracer. The rounds blow holes in the ship (-6 piloting) The beautiful silver haired and skinned android shakes their fist at you.

Shamshir blasts away at Ratrod... another hit! The energy seems to try to spread over the ship, but then it blows a hole in the hull. The mottled gray-and-white ysoki frowns.

Lemgem on the bulk junk racer fires at Orsises Spherical Junkracer KAC: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 shooting wildly!

You notice Nizin has no weapons on his sleek junkracer... and he goes pedal to the metal.

Orsis fires back at Lemgem... KAC: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15... blowing off a peice of a tail fin!

Ratrod glares at Laboni's racer and lets loose with an energy weapon EAC: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9 ... missing!

Velocity in the junk racer that looks right out of mad max, blasts at Nyzin with an energey weapon EAC: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16, scoring a nice hit, it's at that point that the your shots hit velocity... their attention snaps to you... and the android fires the remainder of their weapons at Laboni! KAC: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16, KAC: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17... shrapnel goes flying off your ship (-10 piloting!)

Orsis, unscathed by any shots is neck-and neck with Lemgem.

Ratrod flips Laboni the bird as he flies by your racer that's mired in junk... and he catches Nyzin!

Laboni is in last place as the race continues...

Zvei again targets Ratrod... he scores a direct hit. Once again, the energy from the shot seems to crackle and spread over the ship...

Shamshir watches intently at the interaction with Ratrods ship, he sees it has some device that takes the energy from the blast and reroutes it to his controls... the kinetic weapon, and oddly the other laser blast fired earlier, did not have the same effect.

Shamshir experimentally fires with his energy weapon at Ratrod... another hit! The energy seems to try to spread over the ship, but then blows off some ship. (this DOES affect him negatively)

Phantom takes aim at nyzin and fires the kinetic weapon,it's a horrible shot, but at the speeds, Nyzin is traveling, he can't evade, and it's a hit!

Lemgem on the bulk junk racer fires at Ratrod KAC: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14 scoring a hit

Nizin has no weapons on his sleek junkracer... and he continues focusing on the race
