Human Thief 1 HP 5/5 AC 6

Red snaps shut the lid of the chest and walks out of the room. He glances down the hall the way they had come before deciding to check the exterior door first.

Find Traps: 1d100 ⇒ 68

Open Locks: 1d100 ⇒ 60

Male Human Fighter 1 HP 8/8 AC 2

Blue happily stows the razor in his bag before checking the chest himself. He too seems disappointed by the contents. He follows Red out into the hall.

'Aw, brother, there's plenty ah more rooms to explore in here.' Blue takes a small bit of joy in seeing his brother's obvious annoyance with him.

Elf of Elfheim N 1st levelElf Veteran-Medium

"That's a nice looking brush too. I could use it on my flowing locks if no one objects?"

If no one does Drizzle will take the brush.

Human 1st level Acolyte of Law 1st level Acolyte of Law AC 3 HP 4

Robious eyes the tub and moves the wash basin with his toes.

"A suicide rather than accept the fate of the master of this place."

Robious takes the time to sprinkle holy water upon the skeleton and say a few prayers.

". . . May her soul find peaceful rest and be free of this place as is her body."

Shadowbrook Manor Ground Level Map Evil Labirynth Lord /2

Red checks the door leading outside. It's locked from inside, and simple to open. There's a small staircase leading down to the grounds. From here, he can see a crumbling stone well (A on the map) and what appears to be a doghouse (G). From this angle you cannot see the door on it.

Human Thief 1 HP 5/5 AC 6

Red, disinterested in the dog house goes to check the well.

Male Human Fighter 1 HP 8/8 AC 2

Blue spots the doghouse and his eyes brighten.

'Aw, brother, no one said we got a dog with the house! Here boy, Here!' The large man rushes over to the doghouse and peers inside.

Shadowbrook Manor Ground Level Map Evil Labirynth Lord /2

Red looks down into the well and finds it appears as though it may well be bottomless, continuing down into utter darkness.

Blue checks out the doghouse, a simple, miniature house, with a slanted roof and an arched, 3’ tall opening at the front. It's occupied not by a dog, but by a boar. The boar looks up at Blue and snorts at him, then turns and ducks back into the house. As best as you can tell it's not particularly aggressive.

Male Human Fighter 1 HP 8/8 AC 2

'A Pig? who gives a pig a 'lil house?' Blue slams a fist on the top of the house and moves back towards the intersection in the house.

Human Thief 1 HP 5/5 AC 6

'Selling this wreck will be hell if this well is dry' Red groans. He lights a torch and drops it into the well.

Shadowbrook Manor Ground Level Map Evil Labirynth Lord /2

1d6 ⇒ 5

The torch falls unusually slowly into the darkness and disappears. As you watch, you hear a faint growling sound from somewhere in the abyss of the well, and it sounds ever so far away.

Human Thief 1 HP 5/5 AC 6

Red slowly backs away from the well as if he'd heard nothing and follows his brother to the intersection, hoping whatever he'd disturbed is unable to follow.

Human 1st level Acolyte of Law 1st level Acolyte of Law AC 3 HP 4

Robious leans out the door way.

"If you are done looking around the yard, the elf wants to check out the double doors to the west, but hopes you will check for traps Red."

Human Thief 1 HP 5/5 AC 6

That's the way I was headed, just wanted to give time for whatever was in the well to come surging out, if that's what's going to happen.

'Nothing of interest out there anyway.' Red looks over his shoulder towards the exterior door and tries to keep his voice steady.

Red moves to the double doors on the Western side of the house and inspects them.

Find Traps: 1d100 ⇒ 38

Open locks: 1d100 ⇒ 42

Male Human Fighter 1 HP 8/8 AC 2

'There was a wee lil' piggy out there. May be handy come breakfas' time.' Blue says, a little dejectedly. 'I wanted a dog'

Shadowbrook Manor Ground Level Map Evil Labirynth Lord /2

The group moves down the hall quickly to the double doors and slowly opens them after red checks for traps and finds none.

As you open the doors, you see floor to ceiling bookshelves line the walls of this large chamber.

A dark, female apparition floats silently along the far wall. She appears to be engaged in symmetrical book-stacking.

Human Thief 1 HP 5/5 AC 6

'You must be the librarian?' Red says hopefully. He tries to subtly move his hand to his sword pommel, trying not to alarm the woman.

Shadowbrook Manor Ground Level Map Evil Labirynth Lord /2

The apparition turns to you, places one finger over her shadowy lips, and simply says, "Shhhhh!"

She then returns to stacking her books.

Elf of Elfheim N 1st levelElf Veteran-Medium

"Uh, we are ill equipped to fight a ghost."

The elf whispers.

Human 1st level Acolyte of Law 1st level Acolyte of Law AC 3 HP 4

"Umm, yes. Perhaps we should close the door and check elsewhere."

Human Thief 1 HP 5/5 AC 6

Red gulps and nods to Robious. 'Sorry' He whispers as quietly as possible.

Red closes the door softly, takes a deep, bracing breath and turns to examine the door they had passed to get to the double door.

Find Traps: 1d100 ⇒ 48
Open Locks: 1d100 ⇒ 44

Human 1st level Acolyte of Law 1st level Acolyte of Law AC 3 HP 4

"Wow, your uncle really knows how to raise ones spirits, get it?"

The cleric joked.

Elf of Elfheim N 1st levelElf Veteran-Medium

The elf elbows him in the ribs.

"That one was so bad it could kill the living. Let the thief concentrate."

Shadowbrook Manor Ground Level Map Evil Labirynth Lord /2

As Red examines the door, he notices strange runes that appear magical have been burned into the lintel above the door.

(Read Magic is required to translate the runes.)

The door not only appears locked, but outright refuses to open or budge.

Immediately after the room is a long narrow hallway leading deeper, followed by another door.

Human Thief 1 HP 5/5 AC 6

Red squints up at the runes above the door.

'Seems stuck. Maybe there's another way in.' Red slips past the group and moves up the hall to the far door.

Locate Traps: 1d100 ⇒ 87

Open Locks: 1d100 ⇒ 89

Shadowbrook Manor Ground Level Map Evil Labirynth Lord /2

Red finds no traps on the door, which is unlocked.

Opening the door, you see a huge, intricately carved wooden desk occupying nearly a third of this well-appointed study.

In the west wall, between two windows, is a small, dormant fireplace. Mounted above the mantel is a gnarled quarterstaff.

In the southwestern corner, a comfortable looking armchair stands empty.

On a small, circular table by the armchair is an ornate glass bottle and a pewter chalice.

GM Dice:

1d6 ⇒ 2

Without warning, a small humanoid creature with bat wings drops down from above the doorway and attacks Red!

Bite: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
Bite Damage: 1d3 ⇒ 3

The creature bites Red on the shoulder, and after the initial shot of pain, Red begins to feel strange.

Red, roll a save vs. spells, please.

Human Thief 1 HP 5/5 AC 6

No. No is an option right? I can just be immune to bitey stuff?

Save vs Spells: 14: 1d20 ⇒ 7

Shadowbrook Manor Ground Level Map Evil Labirynth Lord /2

Sorry Red.

Red succumbs to the magical effect of the bite and slumps to the ground, asleep.

Sleep Duration (turns): 5d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 6, 4, 1) = 18

Since that drops you to -1 HP, Red is unconscious. He can be healed, but won't wake until the magic wears off.

The rest of you are now in combat.

Blue Petes init: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Drizzle init: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Robious init: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (6) - 1 = 5

Homunculus Init: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15

Combat order: Homunculus, Blue Petes, Drizzle, Robious.

Round 1

The Homunculus next sets his sights on Robious and flies at him to bite.

Bite Attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10

The cleric's armor easily protects him from the creature's attack.

Players are up.

Human Thief 1 HP 5/5 AC 6

Red should be at 2 HP by my reckoning. I changed his HP on his header when I rolled the save.

Shadowbrook Manor Ground Level Map Evil Labirynth Lord /2

Enjoy your long nap then. :)

Human Thief 1 HP 5/5 AC 6

Red slumps to the floor, blood seeping from the wound on his shoulder. The scene appears ghastly until the lithe man begins to snore in a weak imitation of his larger brother.

Male Human Fighter 1 HP 8/8 AC 2

Blue roars in fury, seeing his brother fall after the strange creature's attack. He steps over his brother's body protectively, putting himself between the creature and his kin, and swings Loretta at the winged form.

This one's for family Loretta!: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11

Blood for Blood!: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Shadowbrook Manor Ground Level Map Evil Labirynth Lord /2

Blue Petes just narrowly misses the Homunculus with Loretta.

Drizzle and Robious are up.

Elf of Elfheim N 1st levelElf Veteran-Medium

Drizzle sees the demon like nature of the assailant and deems him worthy of a spell.

"Skizzot!"

Magic Missile!: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

"Take that fiend!"

Human 1st level Acolyte of Law 1st level Acolyte of Law AC 3 HP 4

Seeing Red fall with a bleeding wound, Robious moves to heal him.

"Gods of Law, restore the balance that evil has upset, but countering the harm done this man."

Cure Lt Wounds: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

Shadowbrook Manor Ground Level Map Evil Labirynth Lord /2

Drizzle's Magic Missile hits the Homunculus and knocks it for a loop, but then the creature flutters on.

Robious heals Red's wound, though his magical slumber remains.

End of Round 1

Round 2

Blue Petes init: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20
Drizzle init: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10
Robious init: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (14) - 1 = 13

Homunculus init: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

Combat Order: Blue Petes, Robious, Drizzle, Homunculus.

Seeing what the creature did to Red gets everyone riled up.

Male Human Fighter 1 HP 8/8 AC 2

Seeing his brother's wound improve, Blue's impish grin burns through the plain rage on his face. He gives Red a sharp kick in the side.

'Get up ya bum, thar ain't a thing wrong with ya now!' He shouts, laughing. He brings Loretta to bear on the winged creature once more.

Don't let me down, sweetheart!: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10

Groos? what the hell is a groos?: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

jeezy petes

Human 1st level Acolyte of Law 1st level Acolyte of Law AC 3 HP 4

Robious whips out his sling!

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

But gets totally tangled up in it spoiling the shot.

"What?! Don't look at me like that! Slings aren't my thing yet, I just got it the other day."

Elf of Elfheim N 1st levelElf Veteran-Medium

Drizzle makes an overhand chop at the winged assailant with a flourish out of his scabbard.

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

"Tiger coming down the mountain meets the kissing crane at sunset. Perfectly executed I might add, and I do."

Shadowbrook Manor Ground Level Map Evil Labirynth Lord /2

While the others miss, Drizzle lands a critical strike on the Homunculus! The creature's body melts into a pool of ichor, the magic that animated it dissipating into the ether!

End of combat. 80 XP for everyone since I forgot to award XP for the zombie maid.

Red still lays on the ground in a magically induced slumber.

The room appears safe enough now to search and to take a rest while you wait for Red to finish his long nap.

Elf of Elfheim N 1st levelElf Veteran-Medium

Drizzle checks for secret passages and hidden doors.

Male Human Fighter 1 HP 8/8 AC 2

Blue scoops up his brother and lay him across the desk. He attempts to wake Red by alternating between gently slapping him in the face, yelling into his ear, and shaking him rigourously.

'He's not this heavy a sleeper most uh tha time.' He shrugs to the elf and cleric.

Shadowbrook Manor Ground Level Map Evil Labirynth Lord /2

Red continues to sleep, still under the magical enchantment.

Drizzle doesn't find any passages or doors within the room.

As you search around the room, you find in the desk a single item, a cut and polished onyx gemstone with the letter "R" inlaid in gold.

By the armchair on a small, circular table is a bottle of what smells like a very fine absinthe and also a pewter chalice.

The only other item still of possible interest in the room is the quarterstaff mounted above the fireplace.

Male Human Fighter 1 HP 8/8 AC 2

Losing interest in his sleeping brother Blue scoops up the polished onyx. He turns it over a few times in his hand, struggling to read the inscription. Eventually, the big man deciphers the text.

'I think ya dropped this when I shook ya.' Blue tucks the onyx into his brother's pocket and moves to inspect the bottle.

After giving it a test sniff, Blue takes a healthy pull off the bottle.

Shadowbrook Manor Ground Level Map Evil Labirynth Lord /2

1d100 ⇒ 82

The absinthe has a strong kick to it, but Blue's had stronger rotgut in his day.

Male Human Fighter 1 HP 8/8 AC 2

Blue admires the bottle before he offers the bottle to his conscious companions. He nods towards the staff above the fireplace.

'Anyone need a new walkin' stick?' Blue begins to grow impatient waiting on his sleeping brother to come to. He moves to stand near the door.

Elf of Elfheim N 1st levelElf Veteran-Medium

"I may indeed be able to use that, depending, too bad our original wizard chose to abandon our fellowship."

The elf inspects the staff before he touches it.

Shadowbrook Manor Ground Level Map Evil Labirynth Lord /2

Drawing upon knowledge from his Elven heritage, Drizzle ascertains that the staff is likely magical in nature.

Male Human Fighter 1 HP 8/8 AC 2

'More walkin' stick fer tha rest ah us!' Blue smiles at Drizzle and settles into the armchair, waiting for his brother to stir.

Shadowbrook Manor Ground Level Map Evil Labirynth Lord /2

Hours pass quietly as the group waits out Red's magical slumber.

Finally, Red awakens, the magical sleep at last having worn off.

Want to post a reply? Sign in.

I'm fairly new to contemporary RPGs and played old-school D&D back in the 80s. I'm looking to try my hand at being a GM, and for my first forray into running my own game I'd like to return to the rules I know best.*

*Insert standard spiel about how back in the day 3 alignments were all we needed, races were classes, we killed every NPC we encountered, and carried a 10-foot pole to explore dungeons.

The Tomb of Sigyfel is a short** introductory dungeon-crawl adventure by Goblinoid Games for the Labyrinth Lord system, based on the D&D Basic & Expert rules from 1981.

**Seriously, the PDF is only 1 1/2 pages long. This is a simple, single-level dungeon. I'm not asking for any long-term commitments here, because I don't even know if I'm any good at being a GM.

The Details
- Looking for 4-6 players, new players or new-to-OSR preferred, but anyone is welcome to apply.
- We will be using the Labyrinth Lord rules, but if you may substitute the D&D Basic Rules if you have them.
- recruiting wil remain open for the next several weeks, until we have sufficient players or July 1st.

Character Creation
- Class choice of Cleric, Dwarf, Elf, Fighter, Halfling, Magic-User or Thief, any alignment
- Roll 3d6 six times in the tread below, and arrange as you wish.
- For any stats below 7, you may either re-roll once and accepting the new roll, or take a 7.
- If all your stats fall at 7 or below, you may declare a mulligan and re-roll again. Your GM is not completely without mercy.
- I have a link below to a form-fillable Labyrinth Lord character sheet you can use. Please also fill out your character profile panel and put your vitals in the Classes/Levels field.

The Adventure -- The Tomb of Sigyfel

The Tomb of Sigyfel is a quick play adventure for the Labyrinth Lord fantasy role playing game, and is fully compatible with other Basic Edition games. It is intended for 1st to 3rd level characters. The adventure can be completed in a few hours of play, and is written and presented in the old-school tradition of classic dungeon crawls.

The location presented may be placed near any settlement in the Labyrinth Lord's campaign world. This is an old-school dungeon crawl ripe with danger, wealth, and glory for those who navigate it successfully. The careless will join the dead within the evil tomb.

Background
Legends of the dark-hearted sorcerer Sigyfel abound in the local town, despite the fact that he has been dead for centuries. His evil exploits are the topic of many late night fireside stories, and to this day the local townspeople often paint a red eye above their doors to ward off Sigyfel's evil spirit.

Dark forces stir along a stretch of road near Sigyfel's tomb. A local farmer was found dead along the road, his mouth locked open in an immortal cry of terror. The locals whisper that the tomb of Sigyfel has been opened, and evil seeps from its dark recesses.

GM House Rules
- Clerics get spells at 1st level, as per LL rules and not D&D rules.
- Starting characters get max starting hit points for their class.
- For all combat encounters initiative will be rolled individually for each character and NPC, not as a group.
- Posting frequency will be around once per weekday, weekends optional. I'd like to keep things moving, but I understand that real life takes precedence.

I'm leery, but also curious. I'll roll up some stats, just in case:
.
.
.
.
.
3d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 6) = 14
3d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 5) = 14
3d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 3) = 11
3d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 2) = 10
3d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 2) = 14
3d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 3) = 11

Huh. Is that good? I don't know the system. But it looks good, right?

That's pretty decent. I'd suggest giving the first two sections of Labyrinth Lord Core Rules above a quick skim. If you're familiar with Pathfinder and newer editions of D&D you'll find the rules familiar, just much simpler.

I am pretty new to rpgs, it just wasn't my thing growing up. But now that I'm grown-ish, I love them and there's nothing better than rolling for stats, so with fingers crossed...

3d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 4) = 12
3d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 6) = 14
3d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 5) = 9
3d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 4) = 6
3d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 2) = 7
3d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 6) = 8

I'll re-roll that 6, maybe I'll get a 3
3d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 2) = 8

Bumping this for the last few days.

Stats: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 5) = 15
Stats: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 5) = 13
Stats: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 3) = 9
Stats: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 5) = 9
Stats: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 4) = 13
Stats: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 1) = 8

sweet! I'm a red box player!

Thanks for the late posts. I'm going to bump this through the weekend to see if we get anyone else.

Anyone going to take elf?

3d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 3) = 13

3d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 6) = 15

3d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 5) = 8

3d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 6) = 13

3d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 2) = 12

3d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 5) = 16

Okay I am making an elf or a cleric. Is anyone else playing?

HP for elf: 1d6 ⇒ 6

*Bump*

I would be interested in this. Always up for some old school dungeoncrawling.

EDIT: Oops, messed up the dice at first. Let's try that again...

STR: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 3) = 10
DEX: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 5) = 13
CON: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 4) = 14
INT: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 4) = 11
WIS: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 3) = 9
CHA: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 1) = 10

Gym trash panda,

Looks like you have two actives. The game is dead nuts simple, do you want us to make two characters each?

@Bahbrahb, are you still planning to join as well?

I rather like the idea of folks running multiple characters. That's very old-school.

@Goblin and @Baticeer, if you're good with that, go ahead and roll a second set of stats and decide what kind of characters you want to play. I'm finishing an intro hook for the adventure and I should be ready in a day or so.

Yeah, that sounds fun!
I just noticed you said 3d6 arrange to taste, rather than 3d6 in order, but I kind of like doing the strict order for a one-shot. Less decision making, haha.

STR: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 1) = 8
DEX: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 2) = 11
CON: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 3) = 13
INT: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 5) = 15
WIS: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 1) = 10
CHA: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 4) = 7

Looks like that one would be the wizard then!

Haha, exactly what I was thinking. Textbook M-U stats right there.

The first character I rolled doesn't have outstanding scores in any of the prime requisites, so I'm just going to make her a Thief I think, partly because I've played some OSR games before but I've never played a thief character yet.

Thief Starting Gold: 3d8 ⇒ (4, 2, 5) = 11 110 gp.

Magic-User Starting Gold: 3d8 ⇒ (1, 1, 3) = 5 50 gp.

sorry, still here,

starting gold: 3d810 ⇒ (234, 116, 25) = 375

fighter hp: 1d8 ⇒ 8

3d8 ⇒ (7, 6, 3) = 16 160 starting gold

This intrigues me..

3d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 2) = 7
3d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 4) = 11
3d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 5) = 8
3d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 5) = 15
3d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 4) = 13
3d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 5) = 14

The rolls however, do not. Hmm.

Here's Bahbrahb's character.

Okay, so one player has a MU and a Thief

Blue Pete is a fighter

I have a elf.

3d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 3) = 7

3d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 1) = 12

3d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 5) = 16

3d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 5) = 11

3d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 3) = 10

3d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 4) = 15

What do you guys think? Halfling or cleric? Or?

Blue Pete, why don't you roll up another set and we will chose.

Stats: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 4) = 8
Stats: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 6) = 11
Stats: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 1) = 8
Stats: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 3) = 9
Stats: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 2) = 10
Stats: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 1) = 11

Yeesh, I know stats are pretty unimportant but that is really mediocre.

@TheOrcnextdoor, welcome to old-school roleplaying, where survivability is optional! :-) We'd be happy to have you if you wish to stick around.

@The Goblin, with your stats I'd suggest maybe you take Cleric and Bahbrahb add either Halfling or another Thief, maybe?

So far we have:

The Goblin - Elf, something else
baticeer - Magic-User and Thief
Bahbrahb - Fighter, something else
TheOrcnextdoor - ?

I still need to finish buying equipment, but other than that, here's my thief ready, and if you check my aliases I've set up the magic-user as well.

Okay, I am going cleric

1d6 ⇒ 4

3d8 ⇒ (5, 3, 2) = 10 100gp

3d8 ⇒ (5, 1, 1) = 7 70gp for the elf

Robious the Hammer of Lawfulness!

It's is I, Drizzle of Alfheim come to walk the lands once held by my people once more.

You guys ready to go?

The discussion and gameplay threads are open if folks want to start moving over. I'll let everyone post some RP in the gameplay thread introducing their characters and we'll get started.
