Goldmyr's Rise of the Runelords

Game Master Nathan Monson

1 to 50 of 99 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | next > last >>

My real life group is unable to meet any longer and just one pbp isn't enough to scratch my pathfinder itch. So, let's start a classic together. I'll begin this game rather by the book, but things may go off script if the players are creative. Instead of tracking experience, I'll just let you know when you've earned a level up. Of course, the level up may not be when you expect it to be. Now with that said, on to the creation rules

-All Paizo material is allowed. No 3rd party this time around. Sorry guys.
-20 point buy. Max 20, Min 7 after racials.
-2 traits. One must be a campaign trait. In addition to the RotR campaign traits from the APG, you may allow use one of the bonus feats from the original player's guide as a campaign trait.
-Average starting gold
-Max hp at 1st level. Average hp rounded up at every level afterwards.
-Start at 1st level.
-I'm looking for 6 players.

No date yet on when recruitment will close. Probably won't keep it open longer than a week or so. I look forward to seeing the submissions.

I'll submit something soon, probably martial (I do love my barbarians).

Did the earlier thread get deleted? As before, this character was made for a RotRL that stalled out.

Here's Kent, whom I submit for your consideration. It won't affect my choice either way, but I do have two questions for you when it comes to character creation.

1. I know a number of DMs have custom rules for Style feats, and as an unarmed fighter I will likely be grabbing at least one Style feat tree. I wanted to know if you had any house rules about such things, specifically whether Fuse Styles is a prerequisite for using multiple styles at once, and if so, is it possible to acquire without being a Master of Many Styles?

2. Are you using any of the new variant rules from Pathfinder Unchained?

I am not a PFS DM.

Fuse Styles is required to use multiple stances at once. I could work around the Master of Many Styles ability with a feat or something if you really need it.

A feat to combine multiple stances at once would be appreciated. I'm positive of one I'm going to take, but if you would be willing to make a feat that functions as such, that would be awesome. There are a couple really fun combinations you can make.

Dotting. Will consult RotR Player's Guide.

I'm not interested in there's no PFS credit. Good luck all

Yeah. You should repost. This game will get off the ground. Life happened and I ended up forgetting about the other thread. And I might be getting the hang of this format. It's much different than the RL games I'm used to running.

Appearance and Personality:
Ixidor is a tall, thin Varisian with a charming smile and a head of short, scruffy brown hair. He usually has a knowing look in his violet eyes, and is quick to offer a humorous quip. His successes around varisia have made him very proud of his powers, and he is quick to brag, and quicker to insult if they are questioned; when dealing with people more powerful than he is, he will usually let the insult pass in the moment, but he will not forget.

Backstory:
Ixidor grew up on the road, traveling with his parents in their caravan through southern Varisia. As he grew older he began to learn the family business of “Magic” and also separating rich foreigners from their wealth; the caravan would arrive in a new town and put on a show for the locals, showing them fantastic feats, telling fortunes, and generally showing the locals a good time; within a day or two, they would have identified the richest people there, and robbed them while they were distracted by the show. When Ixidor’s magical talent manifested it became another tool in this endeavor. One day, their luck ran out; a powerful Chelish noble, set a trap for them, inviting them for a private performance at his estate, and then attacking them with trained soldiers and bound devils; those who fought back were killed, the rest were enslaved. Ixidor escaped using his Illusions; as soon as he escaped the trap he ran, leaving his family to their fate, something he has regretted ever since. Ixidor continued his families tradition, but now there was a bitterness behind it where before there had been simple amusement, he focused his efforts on the rich and powerful, especially those who held power over others. As he traveled back and forth across Varisia, he made a name for himself as a skilled entertainer, as well as a not insignificant number of powerful enemies. Despite, or perhaps because of, some very narrow escapes, his Ixidor’s confidence in himself and his powers grew; he believes that he will always be one step ahead of his foes because he is better then them, an assumption that has so far proven to be correct. Hearing of Sandpoint’s theater, Ixidor decided that he had to preform there so he traveled there to secure a meeting with its owner during the swallowtail festival.

I am wondering how many posts do you expect from your players per day and how many posts can you make per day?

An Elven ranger to throw into the ring.

A forlorn fellow that has spent time among the humans. This isn't Drizzt or a dandelion munching fop. He sits nursing an ale mug held in cestus covered hands. An Elven curveblade is attached to his back and a set of manacles dangles from his hip.

We are in an inn right? :)

I would like to apply with this human oracle focussed on summoning the creature of hell, not knowing how she came to have this power and still scared of it.

I still need to polish the background and finish buying equipment.

Goldmyr, what kind of posting rate are you looking for? Also, what is your opinion on the unchained material?

Turns out I thought everyone was referring to a recruitment I *might* have posted a while back, but no this specific game was posted twice. I thought it got eaten by the goblins attacking the computer the first time around.

You'll be starting out in the morning of the Swallowtail Festival, so you may very well find yourself in a tavern if you so chose.

I can post at least once a day, usually. So I generally expect others to be able to do the same, but missing a day every now and then is fine. If you're going to be away for more than say a weekend, please let everyone know.

I have not had a chance to look at the unchained material so far. What alternate classes/systems are you looking to make.

If Darror Glassclaw stops by, I don't think Gnoll is a Paizo race, at least not a player race.

They are in ARG, 6rp race.

Finally! A RotRL game! I've been eager to jump into one of these. Let's see what I can conjure, I've got a few really good ones bouncing around that I'd like to throw in.

Hi I'd like to throw my hat into the ring - long time f2f player of D&d and pathfinder - this would be my first pbp. I'm thinking either a half-Elven Magus, or a human Cleric. I'll put them both together so you can see if you like either of them!

Logan, you missed Darror Glassclaw.

Bring on the applicants.

"Alright, softskins! Azzerix is here! You may begin erecting statues in my honor while I start scoping out places to build my tribe's new snarl!"

Introducing for selection, the brash, proud and extremely entitled little kobold sorcerer, Azzerix Wyrmclaw, for selection.

My sole Rise of the Runelords character who almost got a chance to play in a real life game that never took off. He is a human Paladin who focuses on the use of the longbow. I might update him a bit, but he's mostly all there.

Okay the fluff and backstory is done now.
Background Story

:

Personality: Darror desires to be a respectable healer, but generally has a short fuse for those that continually get hurt in foolish actions, and is annoyed when people that point out his race's heritage for, 'picking off the sick and injured'. The irony having run its course to the point it's no longer funny.

Like most Gnolls he has a 'do what I say and don't ask why' attitude, so he tends to rub others the wrong way, even when he is trying to be helpful. He also tends to phrase his own questions as demands.

Though his aspired position is one that is geared towards helping others, he doesn't feel any altruistic calling. Instead it's an expansion of knowledge, and elimination of the traditional, but barbaric treatments folks receive when they can't acquire competent magic using healers.

Background:
Darror was born to the Rock Stalkers tribe of Gnolls in the Fenwall Mountains. Like many male Gnolls his options were hunt for food and slaves for the matriarchy, or become food. Though pragmatic enough to capture and kill small game for the tribe, he quickly found a dislike for the hunting of sentient creatures, especially humanoids.

It was one day though when the more experienced hunters successfully raided a Varisian caravan that he saw a new option to the ways of hunt or die. Among the Varisian humans that were injured, Darror noticed that after they were thrown into the tribe’s wooden holding cage, they started to tend to each other's wounds, pouring strange smelling liquids on deep cuts and badging limbs.

In contrast he watched as a wounded pack member was dragged back, sacrificed and eaten for losing his leg to one of the Varisians in combat. While this was considered the 'normal' way of dealing with pack members with such wounds, he knew it could have easily been him on the altar.

At the hour when the night started to fade and the sun began to rise, he snuck to the Varisians’s cages and discovered one that could speak his language. The Varisian agreed to take Darror with them if he freed them and taught them the talent for taking care of wounds. He returned with a few weapons he could scrounge and broke the lock with a flask of 'acid' the Varisian gave to him. Watching the fluid ‘eat’ the metal was another eye opening experience as while the lock was old, it was strong and he had watched strong humanoids and ravenous Goblins all fail to break it.

And thus the Varisians and their new ‘family member’ snuck down the mountain side under the cover of dawn. And once free of the old tribe Darror’s career as an alchemist began, as did his connection with the Sczarni Family. Under the tutelage of the Varisian’s he rescued, he was trained in the mixing of chemicals and treating wounds, as well as brewing potions and how to use certain herbs. He took the last name Glass Claw after his habit of tapping the glass on vials as he filled and mixed them. He was also taught a few ‘dirty’ tricks for when folks get too rough with the family’s interests. He absorbs knowledge like a sponge, and developed a scathing wit as he learned several of the region’s languages.

The Sczarni also know that Darror won’t ask how the crossbow bolt got lodged in a fellow’s rump or why they need so much Night Tea at such a late hour. Though he might make their ears burn with his choice words.

After the family’s caravans were ran off from Magnimar for loitering, Darror has been asked to go to the little frontier town of Sandpoint to look for a friend of the family named Jubrayl Vhiski at a place called the Fatman’s Feedbag, in hopes his connections will help them to set up outside of Sandpoint for a time.

He arrives in Sandpoint right as the Swallowtail festival is beginning.

Sounds very interesting! What's your stance on Words of Power?

Thikka, Ratfolk Witch (Character sheet at link, not on profile, will update if picked).

Background will be coming in shortly.

Thikka:

Thikka grew up in the Grand Lodge Library in Absalom. Many people would say they grew up in Absalom, but she grew up in the library. Thikka was the daughter of one of the maids who keep the Grand Lodge Library clean while the researchers work in it. But her mother died when she was barely walking, the victim of a robbery attempt on the Repository.

The Chief Librarian, Silase Mendevian, and his associates, could not locate any relatives of Thikka's, and as her mother had alerted the security forces before being killed, thus stopping the robbery of the Repository, they felt they owed her better than a cot in an over-worked under-funded orphanage. So they simply never bothered telling anyone about her. She grew up in one of the storage rooms in the back of the library, surrounded by elderly researchers and librarians.

Despite her (relatively) young age, she acts quite like the elderly curmudgeon. Non-Ratfolk, usually not knowing how ratfolk age, are likely to think her an old woman. She has a sharp tongue and acerbic humor that is not likely to win friends or influence people. However, she is very sharp, and has read books her entire life.

Thikka was escorting copies of nearly 100 books from Absalom to the Cheliax Capital when her ship was caught in a storm and sank at sea. She lost most of her possessions except her pack which she managed to grab as the ship went down.

After floating in the wreckage for a couple of days, she was rescued by a cargo ship heading to Sandpoint. Thus she's been stranded in Sandpoint for the last few weeks, looking for a way to raise funds to get word to the Grand Lodge that she is alive, although the books were lost.

I used to hate firearms, but I'm on board with them now.
I've never seen the Words of Power system used in practice, so of course I'm willing to try anything once.

I'll probably end recruitment sometime around Saturday afternoon. I'd wait until Monday, but we've all ready got 14 applications in three days. I don't want to wait until selecting characters becomes almost impossible.

Background and concept elements:

Father Mograin Duranin is a Hellknight Maralictor in the Order of the Godclaw.
My mother Jaina Duranin is a Paladin of Iomedae.

I have a strong sense of justice and honor.

Having come of age and reached the rank of paladin, my father has sent me on a journey throughout the world. “One who does not know the land can never learn to protect it.”
I began my journey traveling to Egorian, as my Uncle lives there. I spent a few months there helping out citizens on minor quests. My uncle advised me to continue journeying and even found work for me escorting a shipment of goods down to the cathedral in Sandpoint. Having just arrived I made my way to the Cathedral in hopes of finding my Aunt, only to learn she has moved to Remesiana. Without family in the city I'm currently lost without guidance on where I can be of help to the people. The caravan that I traveled with, is a group of Varisians who apparently travel all across the lands doing trade and entertainment. I found the caravan leader and offered protection services free of charge. I've found the people fascinating and greatly enjoy hearing their stories and seeing a culture so different than my own.

My family is of nobility, how high a noble is unknown to me as the family has always said that our jobs are more important than trite concerns with bloodlines and birthing. “A man's name is only good for marking a gravestone, you want to make a mark on this world you make it yourself.

DM for this character only:
I've always found my family a bit odd. They claim unconcern with birthing and bloodlines, yet my mother and father's families have arranged marriages within each others family for generations far beyond what I even know. Going back hundreds of years, possibly even more. Each male in my father's family is promised to a female in my mothers family by their 5th birthday. Thus, my family is extremely close and intermingled many members of my family are married to cousins or first cousins.

background continued:
My mother and father themselves are very like-minded in many things. Their only true difference is that my father and many in his family still worship Aroden, choosing to believe that he is not dead and that faithfulness is required for his return; whereas, my mother has taken to Iomadae's teaching claiming that if faithfulness could bring Aroden back he would have returned long ago. Having been raised under both teachings I faithfully serve both gods, hoping Aroden will one day return, and reclaim the seat Iomedae is protecting for him.

Goals

I hope to become worth of the title of Hellknight. My father sent me on the pilgrimage saying I need to learn more about the world. What I think he truly means is that I sometimes allow my strictness of the law falter if I can sense it is for the greater good. Alexander is extremely naive and does not realize that hellknights put the law above the good of the people.

DM of the character only:
Unknown to me, and all in my family save the head of the family and his wife (my grandfather and grandmother). Our family has a strong Azlanti heritage that the family does not want diluted. Thus the strict rules on marriage.

appearance, memories, mannerisms, and quirks:

Appearance
I have deep purple eyes and black flowing black hair. My armor is a polished black with a guard over my face that accentuates my piercing gaze. The shield I carry is a circular steel shield with a winged eye decorated on it. Between the arm straps of the shield is a built in scabbard from which my longsword can be drawn.

Memories, Mannerisms, Quirks
My devotion to the Hellknight order is based strongly on my families ties to it. Green in the way of the world (mostly due to age and lack of experience), I often don't realize that my idealistic devotion to order and law cannot mesh with my goodness in an evil society.

My betrothed, Abigail Kahlyne, is only 14 years old, and lives with her father in Korvosa. We are set to be married when she reaches the age of 16 if I have finished my pilgrimage by then.

When I reached the age of manhood and became a paladin. The day before my father set me on my journey. He came to me and told of the day he became a paladin himself. He reminisced about how his father came and taught him the battle poem of our kin. My father then said to me, “When your foe hears this, he shall tremble, for he will know that you are one of the Duranin.” The poem my father taught me was this,

“When shadow comes to claim our souls,
Some must rise the light of old.
Names in stone, spirits of legend,
Deeds unknown, yet never forgotten.
These are the Duranin –
of honor within, and of fear without.
Remember them,
when in hope you doubt.”

“From today you may call yourself a Duranin. But you are not yet ready to bring order to this land. You must strike out and find your own path and only if that path leads you home, will I accept you in my order.”

Alchemists and investigators can craft with the Master Craftsman feat. What are you looking to craft? I could possibly see getting rid of the limitations on what crafting feats you can take.

Lots of good applicants so far! Best of luck to all!

I've been dying to get into this AP ever since I first started getting into Pathfinder, so I kind of hope I get picked, but yeah, lots of good stuff to choose from here.
