"We need to make sure Gruthic is ok."
Sounds of combat being less than his gun, Xanyon holds fire for now but readies to rush to Gruthic as soon as the boar is clear.
DM Stormwind
The massive shadowy shape moves forward a bit, giving you a vague view of its profile. It can be heard sniffing loudly, and searching around on the ground for things of interest. As you watch, it leans down and plucks at something with its mouth, trying a couple of times to get a good grip, but then you hear a scraping sound of metal on rocks as it starts to drag something heavy back towards its lair.
Muqaq al-Varisi
"Did it just steal Gruthic's shield? Dawnflower's tits!" Muqaq curses. "I suppose it's down to me to get over there and heal him. Please, for the love of god, cover me with your ranged weapons."
Muqaq waits until the creature is fully in its lair, and then moves forwards as stealthily as he can towards Gruthic.

Advancing at half speed, so 30 ft/round. Taking 10 on stealth for a 13. Once I reach Gruthic, if he's still alive I will cast cure light wounds on him.
Healing: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
My AC is 17 right now from mage armor if something attacks me. If I see the boar emerge, take a run action away from it towards companions as soon as I can.
DM Stormwind
The huge beast moves back, dragging its load back into the broken building, through the collapsed western wall. Once it is out of sight, Muqaq starts moving forward.
Gruthic was downed by AoO's as he tried to withdraw, meaning he was barely a few feet from the structure when he fell.
As Muqaq draws closer to the structure, the area comes within the range of his darkvision. A sinking feeling strikes him deep his bowels as he sees Gruthic's massive tower shield lying discarded a few paces from the building, but of Gruthic he sees no sign.
Why would a pig steal a shield? Particularly when it is a large omniverous beast with a tremendous appetite and a demonstrated taste for meat?
Gruthic, could you roll for stabilization please?
Akhom Ubayid
As he gets a vague glimpse of the massive creature, Akhom releases his arrow, aiming for th eyes...
This is for my readied action, I'll just make the basic roll and let you apply negatives (of which there are many, I believe!).
Comp Longbow: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 111d8 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Akhom then advances steadily, drawing and firing again.
I'm not sure of my premise location, but I'd like to get closer to improve my chances of hitting, while not being in danger of getting caught up in melee...
Comp Longbow: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 81d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Well then...

Akhom Ubayid
I took this to mean I could take it:
Although it is dark, you can still make out vague shapes. You could take your shot, but seeing as you are not sure exactly where Gruthic is in relation to the larger shape, it might be risky to take the shot. As you have your bow at the ready, I don't think there is any other action you would be able to take in the surprise round.
But, if not, no biggie. I missed anyway, so it changes nothing. In any case, I'm advancing with Seif.
DM Stormwind
If you took that shot that is fine; the beast didn't seem to notice as the arrow went over and beyond it.
You know not whether Gruthic is alive or dead at this point, however you do know that if he is alive he probably does not have much time. The beast will be hungry, as his first meal of the day has not yet been brought, and the helpless dwarf will make a good meal. If you wish to save him, you will need to act quickly.
Akhom Ubayid
Akhom moves forward beside Muqaq, his bow out and ready. Even as he follows Muqaq's directions, he questions. "Perhaps I should go and heal him, and bring him back," the boy suggests. "I'm sturdier and better armoured, though my healing powers are not as great as yours... Shall I go?" He waits on the word of his leader.
Muqaq, if you'd rather go in I'll follow you closely and cover you. Otherwise, I'll rush in while you cover me with fiery rays?
Muqaq al-Varisi
Since the beast apparently hadn't heard him Muqaq motions the rest of the group forward. "We can't abandon Gruthic. Akhom take point, everyone else follow at four paces and cover Akhom with ranged weapons. Move fast and quiet people. If the beast is on you too hard Akhom, start running back the way we came and don't stop. You can distract it while I heal the dwarf, and everyone else can help you."
His orders delivered Muqaq waits for Akhom to take point and follows at four paces, his hand cupped and ready to throw fire at the pig.
Akhom Ubayid
Akhom slings his bow over his shoulder, and moves forward swiftly, his buckler held at the ready.
Hmmm, not that Akhom's aware of this, but it looks like the thing has a 50/50 chance of hitting me each attack, and I'm expecting an AoO if it has reach of 10', one anyhow when I pick up Gruthic, an attack on its turn - and a Withdraw will still leave me another AoO if its reach is 10'... Pray to Sarenrae, folks, it'll likely drop me if it hits twice, and it's going to get 2 or 3 shots at me. Illusions, anyone..?
DM: So I'm double moving forward till I can clearly see what's happening. I'll decide when I can weigh up my options properly.
DM Stormwind
Most large quadrupedal animals do not actually have reach.
Akhom moves forward up to the broken building, while Muqaq trails behind at 20 ft, with his other teammates along with him.
As Akhom comes around the corner of the building he sees the Dire Boar, Gruthic right beneath his snout lying in an unceremonious heap. Gruthic lies about ten feet in, with the boar standing immediately behind. He cannot tell from where he is if the dwarf is alive or not, but he certainly looks battered and dirty. If Akhom steps into the building, his allies will lose sight of him, and be unable to provide supporting fire, unless they swing around to the west to be able to see in through the fallen wall.
As soon as he sees the scene, Akhom is seen by the Boar. It stares back at him with large solid black animalistic eyes. He tosses his head a bit in an aggressive show, but does not move forward. You are thinking that he is guarding his meal; if you depart now, he will let you, but make a move forward and the boar will kill you too.
Akhom Ubayid
Most large quadrupedal animals do not actually have reach.
So 2 attacks instead of 3. Sweet. Only about 21.5% chance of death :) So, assuming I'm within 20'...
Akhom, staring down the beast, darts in towards his friend, ready to dodge any attack. Using Total Defence (and buckler - AC 23) and moving adjacent to Gruthic - even better if I'm 10' (or 2 diagonal) from the boar.
DM Stormwind
Akhom, are you asking because you wanted to delete that post, or just in general, noting that it's gone? Would you like to change your action, or leave it as posted?
Akhom Ubayid
Akhom, are you asking because you wanted to delete that post, or just in general, noting that it's gone? Would you like to change your action, or leave it as posted?
No no, my posted action is fine - something went screwy with my Internet and I double-posted. When I went to delete it, the option was gone, so I edited it instead. Carry on!
DM Stormwind
Okay, I've done up a map to help clarify what the scenario looks like. As you can see, the Boar is basically standing over Gruthic, and was tugging at his armour when Akhom came in. At present, if Akhom charges forward, his companions will lose sight of him once he goes into the building, and therefore be unable to cover him. The beast is ready and waiting for Akhom to make an aggressive move, so if we proceed as it has been stated so far, the Pig will get to use a readied action against Akhom when he comes in range. Note that the scale is 15 ft per square. Any changes anyone would like to make before we move ahead?
Muqaq al-Varisi
Shoot it instead Akhom? Battle conditions sometime require changing of plans. We just need to get it away from Gruthic and kite it around shooting at it. In melee none of us could stand up to it for too long. If you wanna risk your own ass charging in that's up to you.
Akhom Ubayid
Ok, assuming if I 5-ft step back while drawing my bow I can have cover from shooting around the corner?
Akhom steps back, drawing an arrow and nocking it as he hisses, "Fan out! Hopefully it will charge out, and we can hit it from all sides!"
As he finishes speaking, his arrows streak through the air towards the beast.
I won't be within 30', will I? No Point Blank Shot...
Rapid Shot: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 81d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Rapid Shot: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 171d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
DM Stormwind
Gruthic stabilizes, and is no longer dying; not that anyone else knows that.
Changing his mind about running in and trying to grab his companion from under the beast's nose, Akhom chooses instead to try to lure the beast out, by proverbially smacking it on the nose. He takes what cover he can behind the edge of the building, and readies two arrows...
I think you are about exactly 30 ft from the monster, so I'll give you PbS.
The two loosed arrows streak forward, but due to haste to get the second arrow ready, the first is shot directly into the wall behind which he is taking cover. It shatters on the old stone and mortar wall, and sprays fragments of wood about the archer. The second arrow clears the obstruction and sails towards the beast. It connects it the flesh just behind the beast's head, and sinks in deep. The boar lets out a piggish squeal, though the noise is deep and very, very loud in the enclosed space, given the size of the pig.
It takes 8 damage.
The beast charges towards Akhom, tearing up the dirt floor with it's split toed hooves, and brings up one of its huge tusks, to gore the dark skinned archer, or perhaps just run him through completely.
Attack vs AC 23 (19+4): 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 9 + 2 = 20
Akhom manages to duck back behind the wall just in time and the pig hits the stones of the structure instead. 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (3, 6) + 9 = 18. The blow knocks out a 3x3 foot section of the wall, bringing down a rain of dust and debris.
Round 1:
Muqaq: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
Seif: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 171d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Xanyon: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Dire Boar: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Tiebreaker: Xanyon vs. Boar: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 91d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Initiative Order: Muqaq, Dire Boar, Xanyon, Sief, Akhom.[/dice]
[ooc]Through the hole he has created, and the open front of the building, the others in the group can see bits of the giant Boar, so it can be attacked, but it will have cover from everyone, including Akhom, due to the corner of the building he is hiding behind.
DM Stormwind
Muqaq'a movement catches the beast's attention for a bare moment, as he moves to the debris for cover, but one out of his sight, the creature turns its attention back to the immediate threat in front of it.
Gore Attack against target with cover: 1d20 + 8 - 4 ⇒ (9) + 8 - 4 = 132d6 + 9 ⇒ (1, 4) + 9 = 14
The boar strikes the wall again, again bringing down a rain of bricks and mortar. Akhom however, is not harmed. A growing cloud of dust from the falling debris is starting to obscure the area though, and making harder and harder to make out distinct details.
Xanyon, Sief, and Akhom may act, and Muqaq can declare his round 2 action if he likes, to be enacted after the others have posted.
Akhom Ubayid
If I take a 5' step to the left, does the boar still have cover from me? Doesn't look like it... And I'll avoid a charge. It appears to only have one attack (no Nature ranks for me!). If I'm correct in my assumption...
Akhom, eyes wide as the monstrous beast rages at him, steps adroitly away from it and looses two projectiles in swift succession.
RS, PBS: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 101d8 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
RS, PBS: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 201d8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Sigh.
Akhom grits his teeth and grimaces as he bravely awaits the boar's inevitable reprisal.

Uttering a quick prayer to the Everlight, Seif-al-Din unleashes a sling stone at the great hog!
Sling: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 3 + 1 = 24, for 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9 Bludgeoning damage.
DM Stormwind
A few people have made a reference to a Blessing, but I can't find the post where it was cast. Am I missing it, or is it an error?
Round 1
Initiative Order: Muqaq, Dire Boar, Xanyon, Sief, Akhom.
Xanyon leans out and takes a shot at the Boar with his longbow. Unfortunately, the arrow hits the stones of the building instead of passing through the gap, and shatters into splinters.
Sief fires of a shot with his sling, slipping it right through the opening in the wall created by the beast and connecting with it in the side of the head. Confirm Critical: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 3 + 1 = 15. (Fails to confirm due to cover). The beast squeals at the impact.
Akhom steps out into the open and looses his arrow. The shot hits, but sinks into the thick bristly hair along the thing's spine, and does not appear to inflict any injury.
Round 2:
Safely in position, and hidden from view of the massive animal, Muqaq sits and waits; biding his time.
As expected, the boar surges forward and slashes at Akhom with a massive tusk. 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 242d6 + 9 ⇒ (3, 1) + 9 = 13. The blow hits the young Paladin and tears into his thigh. A slight reflexive movement on his part is the only thing that makes the blow a relatively shallow one, glancing off the bone and outwards, instead of hitting on the inside of the bone and riding up directly into his groin. The beast is still 50% in the building, and will therefore continue to have cover against Xanyon and Sief.
Actions Please.
Seif-al-Din ibn-Subhi
Seif-al-Din winces when the boar delivers its bone-shattering blow to Akhom, but resolutely reloads his sling, and takes another shot at the over-sized pig!
Sling: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14, for 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8 Bludgeoning damage.
DM Stormwind
Sorry, my next patient came early, so I was unable to do the edit, and now the window is closed.
Akhom's second arrow, fired but an instant after the first, strikes the boar, sinking into a meaty shoulder.
