F'ing glorious Rah.

Cats walks into town as if expecting to be put under arrest at any moment.

"What do you say we check into the Silver Catgon for the night? Get some rest, some food, maybe a shave or two..." Cats feels the whiskers that have grown over the last few days. "I could use a shave. And I don't remember ever sleeping in a real cat...might like to do that as well."

Cats begins to make his way to the Silver Wagon and will get a room for a few days.

"Yeah, a s!$%, shower, and shave. Then might see about getting some better clothes too. We want to be respectable, don't we?"

As they are walking Pinkie falls in beside Fearless fidgeting with his Glass eye.

"Hey do you think you can figure out what this thing does like you did with some of the other stuff we found? I just figured it was some kind of marble but its suppose to be magic and i can't figure what it does except gross people out when i put it in my mouth."

"A real bed does sound good." Fearless wobbles towards the Silver Wagon tearing his piss yellow robes from his body. he leaves them in a heap on the ground. "Won't be needing those anymore."

One he way Pinkie asks about his eye as he pops it out of the socket, rinsing it off with his mouth again. Fearless grimaces as he grabs ahold of it with his thumb and forefinger. "Ugh yea. I'll see what I can figure out for you."

Hand on the rudder and foot on the gunwale, the Mariner looks the part. His eyes seems more clear and less cloudy than normal, cool wind in his hair, he could sail on right into the mist and never look back. But there no pretense of sacrifice, he would follow this band to whatever end was destined.

Once docked, he gathers as much as he can carry and follows the others. ”We gotta take these people over to the chapel first, tavern is gonna have to wait.”

Brother Butterfly thinks about suggesting that they head to the Temple of Pharasma to properly drop off the patients. But.... that'd be work... and he is a roving shrine to Desna - so he doesn't need to see the Temple just yet.

the call to rest, shower and shave meets with his approval.
Unlike Cats, who likes having hair (and hairballs?) - he shaved three times a day once they got hot water going. That straight razor has NOT gotten to be in Cat's possession. BB worked too hard to get it in the first place. He handed over the Headband of Faithfullness faster than he'll hand over the best grooming item in 50 miles.

Because everyone speaks up and seems to be going his way, he doesn't mess with a good thing.
when Fearless chimes in, Brother Butterfly just nods and give a...
Hmm. Yeah. Sounds like a plan.

Inside his mind, he's already spending the money he has in his pocket on warm baths, and comfortable clothes. He already has awesome shoes, he needs the other fine garments.

with a pause..... tonight, he will find himself a comfortable chair. The Dr. Losandro chair he acquired is back on the imploding island.

Then he hears Mariner say he wants to go to the Temple first.
Come on! Come on! Come On! Why can't I catch a break?
that is his thoughts internally.
Outwardly, he knows better than to mess with Mariner when he has his mind set. Especially on something easy to comply with. Easy, but inconvenient.

Mariner is right. The Survivors are our priority.

A little surprised at Brother's pull to the tavern and bed, "Alright with me if you want to pay for all these men's room for the night" he counts out the number of survivors that they'd be curling up next to. "Not to mention bathing together."

I don't think we have prisoners to bring with us. We've been asked to explore the town to make sure its safe. Hence, food and shave seems like the best choice...as is gathering information in the Inn.

Uncertain if the others are going back for survivors now, Cats goes to explore the Inn to be sure the food and drink is safe for eating and drinking and not poisoned in any way. And if a tray of desserts needs to be tested as well, Cats will put his life on the line and eat them.

Pulling up at one of the small fishing docks on the east side of town the Watchmen split into two parties. Brother Butterfly and the Mariner accompany York and the small group of survivors that came along on the first trip to New Chapel, while Cats, Pinkie, and Fearless strike out for the comforts of the Silver Wagon Inn.

***

The two-story wooden building called New Chapel features a sanctuary, an infirmary providing healing, palliative care, and other services. Though it is the primary center of worship in Thrushmoor, it is sparsely occupied with only a couple old parishioners, and no acolytes wait to greet the survivors of Briarstone when they arrive at the threshold. Yet the structure has the look of a place that is well-tended, and as a fledgling artist, Brother Butterfly cannot help but notice the frescoes that adorn its interior, still bright and clear from being recently painted. They depict an ashen-skinned female with white eyes. She wears a dark, hooded, robe-like dress and holds an hourglass filled with red sand. She stands with children gathered before her, and old men and women trailing behind among a vista of gravestones.

"Beautiful, are they not?" A woman's voice asks, and those nearby turn to see a black robed priestess gazing up at the images. "They are inspired by Pharasma’s holy book, The Bones Land in a Spiral, and depict the Lady of Graves pronouncing prophecies, judging the dead in the Boneyard, and overseeing births like a divine midwife."

The priestess lowers her gaze to take in the survivors. "I am Lady Trilliss Mavaine, and from the look of you, I suspect you have come here seeking something more than the grace of the Lady of Graves."

***

On route to the Inn Fearless handles Pinkie's strange eye, probing its subtle magical auras for purpose. He is able to determine a slight divination magic to it, but little else. It almost seems as if it is an incomplete enchantment, or a small part of a larger object.

The streets are quiet as the trio make their way deeper into town. The locals seem generally unfriendly toward strangers, or maybe it's Pinkie's muttering to himself that influences their reaction. Whatever the case may be the townsfolk avoid greetings, often giving the group a wide berth or averting their eyes.

The Silver Wagon lies between two prominent hills in Thrushmoor. On one side is Fort Hailcourse, the other is Iris Hill. Though the Watchmen had hoped to leave madness back in Briarstone, it would seem that not every disturbed individual in Ustalav was sent to the asylum. Clad in shoddy clothes and wearing a signboard across his shoulders, a man walks the street outside the Silver Wagon.

“Doom is coming!" The man shouts in a voice like thunder. "The second vanishing is upon us! Pray for your salvation that the Briarstone Witch doesn’t take you!”

Cats listens to the crazy man speak. *Then* he turns his attention away from Pinkie and towards the Doomsayer with the signboard. Cats had recently learned of salvation and was on a path of his own, but still wanted to know what others thought of it.

He steps closer to the rambling madman. "Pinkie, I'll be right back." And moves to go speak with the Doomsayer.

"Doomcatter! I say, Doomcatter!" Cats tries to get his attention. "Tell me more! I am new here and wish to learn more about salvation! How do I achieve such? What do I need to do?"

Likely, the first thing out of the Mariner's mouth will quickly lead to more time behind bars. He steps back, pretending to be hired help and lets Brother take the conversation.

Previous to arriving, the Mariner had said to Brother, "We shouldn't trust anyone in this town. Winter was a secret agent of sorts. Who knows if anyone like her isn't working for someone else."

Captain York, you and the survivors are going to be staying at the New Temple... I need whatever I tell the people inside to coincide with what you tell them after we leave.
I am all for telling the truth, but the whole truth is something spectacular . What say you? Before we arrive at the destination ?

With a willing audience, the Doomsayer throws himself into a mind-spinning rant that could rival one of Brother Butterfly's sermons. "I saw the Witch in a dream! She rose up from Avalon Bay and plucked townsfolk from their homes with her wicked, long nails."

"Only the chosen shall be cleansed! Only the pure will have salvation! Magistrate Padgett knows. The Count too! Why do you think they ordered Constable Cesyll to lock up the Fort! Because they know! They know, I tell you! They are corrupt, and they have abandoned us as sacrifice to the Briarstone Witch! Flee Thrushmoor, I beg you! Flee, or be dragged into the depths of Lake Encarthan and fed to the Watcher in the Bay!!"

"Behold!" The man suddenly stops and points to an ally nearby. "The signs are everywhere! When the sky turns, our doom is nigh!"

On the wall in the ally is a disturbing mural depicting the black skyline of a dark city under a yellow sky.

"HEY!" A woman bellows in a voice like a rusty axe. Standing in the door of the Silver Wagon with fists on sturdy hips and a furious scowl on her face is the source. "Stop that ranting and get lost, you gods-damned fool!" She yells, then starts when she gets a better look at the three Watchmen with the Doomsayer. "Oh wonderful. I had assumed you troublemakers had left town with the Count, but I suppose that's too much to hope for."

Depending on Captain York's reply to my question. Here's my introduction to Lady Mavaine

You are indeed right Honorable Lady Mavaine. We are escorting this batch and other survivors that need a short term place of shelter. As the vanguard -We arrive here seeking your help.
Pointing to himself, Mariner, and Captain York.
I lead this band, as I am the most senior and surviving cleric from the mental Asylum on Briarstone island. Earthquakes damaged much of the complex, and we found a large underground chasm that will soon cause the foundation to collapse. Many of the patients and staff- those that survived, need shelter.
The earthquakes weren't the only danger, a group of dopplegangers took the opportunity to find easy prey. We killed all, but one. That one- We have captured. The imprisoned doppleganger will need to be properly tried and judged.

We do not seek aid empty handed. We have some resources and gold to pay for lodging in the short term. Many survivors are skilled.

During and after the earthquakes, we took refuge in the Godly Sanctuary dedicated to Pharasma at Briarstone. That is why we first come to her temple in Thrushmoor.

Inside the New Chapel...

Lady Mavaine listens to the tale of the Fall of Briarstone with little outward reaction, though Brother Butterfly senses concern in her eyes behind a mask of calm likely cultivated by years of religious discipline. York stands by, saying about as much as the Mariner. The orderly was not keen on sparing details of what occurred Briarstone, but decided that the full story could be told by Winter when she arrived.

"I am sorry to hear that such tragedy has befallen the Asylum. Such a troubled place, with a troubled history. Pharasma watch over those that met their fate within its walls." Mavaine makes a sign of blessing and turns to the other survivors. "The New Chapel welcomes all who accept the judgment of the Grey Lady. Though the Chapel itself is limited, the church owns the buildings across the road. One is currently housing the artist responsible for the New Chapel's murals, but between them we should have space enough to provide temporary shelter. Unfortunately, my congregation has never been large, and donations have been scarce of late so, depending on the number of survivors, food, clothing, and warm blankets may be in short supply."

As the survivors file out the front doors of the Chapel, Lady Mavaine falls in step with Brother Butterfly. "On another matter. You said that you are the most senior cleric of Briarstone. Last I knew, Chaplain Setrakian tended the Chapel to Pharasma there alone. Has something become of him?"

Regarding Cat's dog, it was left with the boy Bates, who is still back on Briarstone Island.

The Mariner whispers to the orderlies once he is certain that Mavaine is conversing with Brother and out of ear shot. With a low growl, " Need York and I remind you knuckleheads that the more you spout about monsters and boogeymen, the more likely you'll be committed yourselves? Better start singing a different tune the next time you are asked,...Or you'll soon be saying, 'Don't let the Mariner get you in your sleep.' -Got it?!"

Brother Butterfly puts on a pained expression.
"Your dear Chaplain survived the earthquakes, but a Doppelganger that looked like Dr. Oathsday was discovered and took him as hostage to flee the mobs. It killed him a short time later. My Watchmen pursued and dispatched the FaceStealer. Recovering the chaplains body and possessions."
He takes off the headband of Faithfulness he was wearing and hands it to her. He also pulls out 7 pearls.
"This belonged to Pharasma. I return it to Her.
Here are 6 normal pearls to help pay for the supplies the refugees will need. (6 worth 15 gp each).
This seventh is very magical and was the chaplains. I still need it for my future trials. "

He puts the pearl of power back into his pocket.

"If you wish, we can barter later for the fair value of the magic pearl. Desna does not want me cheating Pharasma of what is hers.
Desna is the great Traveler. I was not destined to be at Briarstone for long. I was probably there for a little over a week. But, the Chaplain was not the only cleric there. A Lady of Pharasma healed the injured and took on a big leadership role. She is still there organizing. "

"Can you introduce us to the Mural painter? I am a novice artist myself but would love to engage in conversation.
While we walk, I can see that greater concerns than the troubles I have brought you weigh heavily in your eyes and on your soul.
Myself and my fellow Watchmen are very good at fixing problems. Let us exchange burdens. You have offered to help shelter, let The Watcmen return a task."

Lady Mavaine insists that Brother Butterfly keep the headband and pearl of power. "Fate has brought them to you as a reward for helping those who sought refuge in a holy place. Keep them." The other pearls she accepts with deep thanks.

Crossing the road the group is led to a pair of buildings. Mavaine opens the one on the right and helps settle the survivors into the place. Afterwards Mavaine takes Brother Butterfly to meet the New Chapel's mural artist.

A tall bearded half-elf in a paint-sputtered smock answers the door, and Mavaine introduces him as Lelwyn Hasok.

Calming words come difficult to Cats, and the Doomsayer flinches away from him. "Briarstone?! I'm not mad! The whole town is! If only I could get through to them, they would see I'm right. Having attempted diplomacy and failed, Cats face takes on a dark intensity and he threatens the Doomsayer with a one-way trip to Briarstone. The words come easy to him, and the feeling of dominance over another person is familiar.

"But... but..." The Doomsayers stammers, clearly intimidated. Backing away, he begins to withdraw. "I'm not the only one who knows the truth. The fishermen have seen things. The Witch walks the shores, they say. You'll see.. you'll see!" These last words are cast over his shoulder from a man in full retreat.

At Lelwyn Hasok's Studio...

"Zandalus? The mad painter of Briarstone? I am familiar with his work. I was scheduled to do a painting for Administrator Losandro at Briarstone Asylum once the mural at New Chapel is complete, and I recall seeing some of his work in her office during the consultation. Disturbing things, but quite unique, and the man is obviously talented. I am sure one of my connections in the art world would be interested in whatever you might have. As for myself I have painted portraits of some of Ustalav's, and Thrushmoor’s, wealthiest citizens, though my passion is landscapes. Here, let me show you."

Lelwyn’s studio takes up most of the lower room of the building and is cluttered with canvases, supplies, and partially completed paintings. "When I am not busy painting in New Chapel, I like to take advantage of the rare moments of good weather to set up an easel on the shore and paint views of the bay. As you might be able to see I favor the Opparan style of Impressionism..."

As he discusses art, it's hard not to notice that Lelwyn seems to be studying Brother Butterfly and the Mariner curiously. After a minute he interrupts the conversation. "I'm, sorry, but you seem familiar. Have we met before?"

"My fellow painter, have you seen a better curled and manicured mustache in all the land? I am also tall and bald and of exotic nationality. I certain if you had seen me before- I should be memorable. Even from a distance. Do you remember where we might have met?"
Trying to get him more on my track.
"You know , Count Lowl likes a painting style I use...I call dreamscaping. I am far from perfecting it, but he had been intrigued.
Do you have any pictures you've done of him?

Also, can I see some of those pictures of the bay or the symbols on the hills you might have done?"

Trying to get information from him vs. The other way around. BB will ask and inquire about others that are Count Lowl hangers oners.
Soon. Enough, he will say.
"oh, look at the time. I have companions to meet. We are at the Silver wagon. You should stop by when you have a buyer lined up."

The Mariner gives Brother the Look when he hears the tinge of suspicion. Just give the nod and it's brains. But otherwise, he pretends to be a mute to Lelwyn's questioning.

Cats smiles, thankful that his path of redemption and salvation are actually working.

Maybe this Catrenrae thing will work out.

"There are five of us and I'd like to pay for a week in advance," Cats says, hoping to avoid another issue in the future. Cats will pay the woman what he considers a reasonable rate. He's really not sure what a reasonable rate is, so will trust in her good will. "The other two are a bald priest and a huge SeaCat. Whatever you do, don't piss off the seaman, he ain't right. Just be nice and give the priest his shaving supplies and there won't be any problems. Unlike the halfling, the SeaCat is dangerous," Cats explains.

Cats looks back at Pinkie and Fearless.

"C'mon, Catkie, Catless...let's get some food and a bath," Cats will go make room in the Inn to await Brother and Mariner unless Pink or Fear have other priorities.

Pinkie joins the 2 for some decent food and a quick bath before heading to the room. After an hour or so of tossing and turning in his bed.

He finally takes his pillow and blanket and crawls under the bed and curls up in a ball in the back corner. Keeping Red Destiny close at hand.

Before falling asleep though he takes his prize glass eye out and stairs at it wondering just what it was a part of.

As Cats, Fearless, and Pinkie head into the Silver Wagon for the evening, revelations are happening across town in Lelwyn's Studio.

"I haven't had the pleasure to work for the count yet.. Wait..." His eyes wide, Lelwyn interrupts Brother Butterfly. "Did you say dreamscaping? I... I think you need to see something I've been working on." Leading Brother Butterfly to a covered easel near the back of the room, he rubs his hands in excitement. "I think I have seen you before. And your friend here too!" He gestures to the Mariner. Taking a breath he places a hand on the cover. "This came to me in a dream about a week ago. I've had trouble with the faces, but tell me, what do you see?" Lelwyn lifts the cover off the easel, revealing an unfinished triptych. Still in the sketch phase, six figures stand against a background of three different cities flowing seamlessly into one another under a yellowish sky. Though their faces are incomplete, the figures depicted in the painting are uncanny renditions of the Watchmen as they were when they first awoke in Briarstone. Back before razors, cloaks, and red boots.

Fearless heads to straight to his room, afterall he wasn't feeling very hungry after all that happened. He needed time to think. Emptying out his pack of items Fearless grabs the silver dagger at his hip and sits it on the ground.

"What happened in Briarstone? Was it an isolated incident? Whas I doing it or was that Zandalus?" He mutters to himself as he circles the dagger, nudging it with his foot expecting it to hover about as the stones did.

"Huh." He sits back down on the bed and concentrates, trying to will the dagger to move. It doesn't even budge. "What was different then from now? I was in life threatening situation was all. The Shapeshifter was out to get me."

****

Several hours later Fearless grows weary as sweat forms on his forehead from trying so much. He paces the room, angry. His mind races back and forth as it drifts back to the Asylum and his dream. the dream where his companions betrayed him as he thought they would. He feels a small twinge in the back of his mind as the dagger slides on the floor a couple of inches with each whack on his head from the club. With the Mariner advancing on him for the killing blow the dagger rises a couple feet into the air. Just as the blade sinks into his chest Fearless falls to his knees gasping for breath and the dagger clatters to the floor as it rattles. He looks over at the dagger, noticing that it moved for the first time.

Emotions roll through him, but mostly scared and excited at the same time. "It was me. I'm not crazy." He raises his head into the air and screams. "I"M NOT CRAZY!" for all to hear.

Fearless then looks around realizing he is alone for the first time. He can't remember the last time slept alone. He was always in a ward with dozens of others screaming and whimpering. The quiet was unnerving and makes it difficult to actually fall asleep for once.

After supper, Cats will take to his room to shave and bathe, making sure he's proper for his apology tour tomorrow. He knows the party has a lot to do.

Cats doesn't get into bed until Brother and Mariner return. Before it gets too late, Cats will go find them.

Not sure where they and we are in the space time continuum. Cats will update them on stuff when they arrive. He'll be sipping a drink and relaxing.

At the Silver Wagon...

After filling his belly with a proper hot meal for the first time in memory, Cats makes to head upstairs for some Brother Butterfly worthy grooming. As he stops to ask the innkeeper for a basin of warm water and soap, she offers him some advice.

"I don't know what happened to you. I'm not even sure this isn't some long con you have going, but if you are truly looking for people to make amends to I'd suggest starting at a tavern on the west side of town called the Stain. I think that was your old watering hole. The proprietor is a man named Emman Gulston. Tell him you've done right by Dena Gallegos and he may be able to point you in the right direction."

Great roleplaying from the Silver Wagon group, but don't get too far ahead of things just yet. I'll get back to Pinkie and Fearless after the New Chapel group catches up a little.

GM Rah - In looking at the painting, can I actually get some idea of the meaning? Or how this artist had a vision of us. I think this is a religious role, +7. If it's a Planes Role -dream plan? - that is +6.

Outwardly calm, cool and collected. Inward, he’s an emotional hurricane. He needs to say this right. Otherwise- “it’s Mariner time” and that solution won’t work so well to keep them out of jail or REAL trouble. The Mariner is counting on him – actually looking at the 6 figures – the others are counting on him to do right.
Making certain this is just a conversation between the three of them. BB decides to go so far over the top that the unreasonable seems reasonable.

I think I am seeing Divine Inspiration. Lelwyn.
You like the Divinites and this rough outline is proof that They like you too. They have given you a gift of prophetic sight. You see into the future.

This painting is of The Watchmen. Heroes that are destined to do more heroic things. The Two of us are members of this band of brothers.
He points to the uncanny drawing of The Twin.
He has already fallen -a tragedy. Killed as he worked to rescue those we eventually saved. He died at the claws of an evil flying creature. But he died to save the greater good- 50+ people.
Looking Lelywn deep in his eyes. Putting his hand on the man’s shoulder for further convincing effect.

This picture tells me that The Watchmen need to visit three cities. See this Yellow Mist. You can tell by the way you drew it that it’s evil and deadly. You subconsciously shy away from the brushstrokes. You KNOW it’s a symbol of Evil. Something that needs to be fought.
Can we count on your help to be a fellow hero?

He gives a dramatic pause.
The Gods Desna and Pharasma have guided us to you – because you are the key.
Your artistic talent has The Roadmap of our needed journey.
This rough painting is the start of something DIVINE.
WE NEED YOU.
Can we count on you?
The Watchmen, Thrushmoor, maybe even the rest of Golorian must know what cities these three represent.
The Gods shine on you Lelwyn. Are you up for the challenge?

After spouting this epic level of b#+@+%!*. Brother Butterfly looks to see if Lelwyn accepts it. Checking to see if he gets absorbed in the concept of being a vital member of something otherworldy.
But, this may be something you have to keep secret. The Agents of evil- whatever The Yellow Mist
represents – will move against these Heroes. Don’t let your painting have more than one martyr.
.

sense motive: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17
Only if he feels confident that he has Lelwyn on their side, he tells him that this picture’s revelation must be told to the other Watchmen. He excuses himself and Mariner and heads to the Silver Wagon.
Seeing the others and saying :
Guys, we are screwed.
And he shares the story.
