DM Jelani |
This is the moment you've been waiting for. You and your companions have just been teleported into the first dungeon for the premier episode of Dungeon Flag.
Your new patrons and their customers are watching with much anticipation to see who will survive, and who will thrive in the game of Dungeon Flag!
You find yourselves in what is clearly a constructed place. The walls of the arena are seemingly cut from one giant stone block. The floors, walls, and ceiling are all perfectly smooth, showing no joints. The ceilings are fifteen feet tall.
The first room is a 30'x30' square with a stout wooden door in the NW corner.
What do you do?
Isaac Kohl |
Isaac looks around the room in which he has found himself to see if he notices anything out of the ordinary. Assuming everything seems fine, he casts a spell and then reads from a scroll. Having prepared, he motions towards the door. "Shall we?"

Flik |
What are the lighting conditions?
The goblin stands in the room, blinking off the teleportation disorientation, his comically-large red eyes drinking in any light of the room as they swiftly range the room and then the other two occupants. He's a hideous little bugger, even for one of his kind ... and small to boot. A smallness made distinct by the surprisingly heavy-looking adventuring pack on his back, a pair of blades, and the bow and quiver hanging from him.
He touches a tiny, spiked-gauntletted hand to his chest ... a quick, jerky movement. "Flik." Then he begins rummaging through his pack, drawing out three vials and drinking them in rapid succession.
His red eyes seems to dilate, his posture eases under his burdens, then the tell-tale inaudible hum of magic races over the little guy's unarmored gray skin.
Then he hikes his shoulders and looks at you both with barely veiled contempt. "Flik scout. Long-legs is'ing stay back until Flik is making this sound." He makes a distinct three tsk sound. "If'ing Flik making no sound, wait longer. If'ing Flik scream like human child, come to getting Flik." He bares a shark's maw of teeth in what must be a grin before continuing. "Flik is'ing to mark doors as'ing we pass. All close to floor in chalkings. One mark is'ing to mean Flik has gone through door. Not come back yet. Two mark is'ing for Flik has checked door and door notting to go nowhere useful. Dead end or something. Three markings is'ing to say DONT GO THIS WAY." He shrugs, "Trapping or some such."
He pauses and looks at you both, making sure you understood. "Flik is'ing to win this. Try notting to getting long-legs killed on the way." A second shark-grin.
Then he moves to the door, checks it for traps, and presses his ear against it.

Flik |
Flik pauses to draw out two more vials and one more scroll, quickly using them all before he whispers a dark, goblinoid prayer. His enhanced eyes seek out any magical auras before he quietly opens the door.
Drink Elixir of Tumbling, Elixir of Hiding, and use Scroll of Bloodhound.
Then cast Detect Magic and quietly crack the door to look at what's beyond.
Stealth: 1d20 + 30 ⇒ (19) + 30 = 49
Perception (beyond the door): 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (10) + 18 = 28
DM Jelani |
Thanks to his ingenuity, Flik immediately spots a magical aura just above the doorframe on the other side the door. It's a divination aura of moderate strength. There are also glyphs which appear to be some manner of magical trap. Flik guesses that walking through the hallway ahead will trigger it.
The hallway goes forward about fifteen feet, before bending sharply to the right and passing through an open stone archway.
Flik |
Flik grins back over his shoulder at the two humans, pointing out the different magical auras. "Traps." He looks up at the one above the door frame. "Giving Flik a boost."
He spends spends some time trying to disable each trap, making the teams retreat safe.
_______
Hell work until he's disabled the traps in this hallway or until he realizes he's not talented enough to disable them. I've given you a block of rolls with his modifer. If/when his search takes him out into the hallway, he'll continue his quiet search for traps or threats as he goes, taking 10 on Stealth and Perception and having Defect Magic up as he goes. Take Ten Stealth = 35; Take Ten Perception = 28.

He then waits an looks on as Flik works to disable the trap.
Lets go Flik, We need to hunt down the other team and then the flag
DM Jelani |
Flik is able to disable the trap within a few seconds of beginning his work. He moves forward to the archway ahead, revealing a 50' by 50' chamber. There is a closed portcullis directly across the chamber from Flik in the north eastern corner. On the east wall there are two more stout wooden doors. This room is lit by a series of glowing orbs set into the ceiling overhead.
Flik |
Flik runs through the routine, checking the room for arcane auras before checking the room for traps in a clock-wise direction from his current position.
___________
Stealth (full speed/taking 10): 35
Perception for traps/threats (taking 10): 28
___________
If no traps are detected, Flik moves to the right-most door. "Flik checkings this one. Big long-legs is'ing to look beyond portcullis."
DM Jelani |
Flik finds a trap on the northernmost door.
Disable Device: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (17) + 15 = 32
He has little trouble disabling it, preventing a pit from opening when someone tried the door.
Jing Long and Isaac go to check out the portcullis. There is no mechanism to open it, but if it's not locked someone strong enough could lift it. Beyond the portcullis stretches a 55' hallway, with what looks to be another doorway halfway down it on the east side.
Isaac Kohl |
"We can try lifting that portcullis, though I'm not sure how much help I'll be with that. If it's going to take too long to get it open, we might be better off taking another route." Isaac moves over to the portcullis and gets a grip on it so that he can help Jing try to lift it.

Lets see if we can lift this thing then.
With the aid of Isaac Jing squats down and grabs the bars of the portcullis lifting with all his might. Casting guidance before trying.
Damn thing is heavy, best not to waste time
If unable to lift I suggest going through the door that was trapped.

Flik tries to open the door, but it's locked. He takes out his picks and goes to work on it.
Disable device: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (6) + 15 = 21
A few seconds later the lock clicks and the door swings open. Flik looks around and after a few seconds returns to report that this room has two doors on the eastern wall.
DM Jelani |
Be thankful for your godly perception. Beat the DC on this one by 1 point.
Flik disable device: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (9) + 15 = 24 Fail
Retry: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (13) + 15 = 28 Pass
Flik finds a powerful magical trap on this door, and has some small trouble with disabling it, though he still manages the feat in about 12 seconds. The door leads to a short, curved corridor, with two more stout wooden doors.
Flik |
Oof. Good to know. It’s at least validating that I spent the gold on that Elixir. :)
Flik’s red eyes widen briefly at the nearly-missed trap, then he growls out a few choice goblin curses at the trap’s stubbornness. ”Notting to liking that one. Maybe other team is’ing to getting ‘sploded on their own, no?”
He steps through the door, noting the door to his immediate north, and quickly checking it for traps and locks before holding up a finger for patience to his team members. "Waiting right here. Flik is for checking other traps before group is moving through this door." Then he skulks around the hall’s bend, checking the full immediate area—including the door at the eastern end—for traps.
Unlike in previous areas, Flik intends to keep any traps in this hall (other than any found on this initial northern door) active. Us knowing about them but leaving them in play could become a boon if we need to fall back and get tricksy.
Also, it should be noted that these standard searches should include searches for secret doors or passages, as well.
Flik |
Flik scurries back through the hallway, giving a negative head-shake to his teammates before quietly opening the northern door (unlocking it, if necessary). "Door at the other end is locked."

Once the door's open, he continues his routine unless there's obvious reason to stop.
DM Jelani |
The next room is a huge empty chamber, with only another single exit. It appears to be untrapped and unlocked. While examining the door, Flik hears someone talking briefly at some distance in the next room, they are answered by two other whispering voices. They are speaking common, and are agreeing that there are no traps on the door, but that it looks locked.
Man...28 take ten perception is killer. Even with the -5 for the door, and the distance modifiers you can hear the details of a whispered conversation in the next room. Impressive.
Flik |
Few ... it payed off here (hopefully).
Flik grins wickedly back at his teammates and holds a finger up in front of his lips. Then he points through the door, holds up 3 fingers with one hand and makes his other hand do a mouth talking sign. (Like a duck's beak opening and closing.) Then he presses one hand emphatically on the door, then with the other one, indicates some distance on the far side of the door.
Then he draws out a vial from his bandolier and a scroll from one of his scroll cases. Then he mouths to the group. Prepare. Signal when ready. Then he drinks the vial and holds the scroll, waiting for the group's ready signal.
_________
Some pantomiming. (Standard action? maybe full round given the amount of it?)
Then move action to draw out Mutagen, standard to drink it.
Then a move action to draw out scroll of Invisibility, holding it ready in anticipation for teammates's ready signals.
Isaac Kohl |
Isaac nods to Flik's pantomiming and pulls out a scroll and a wand. He activates the wand first, and all of a sudden there seem to be three extra Isaacs. Then, surmising from the way Flik is holding the scroll that he is worried about the noise from reading the scrolls, Isaac mouths to Flik: On three.. Then he counts to three with his fingers. As he reaches three, he unrolls the scroll and begins reading it.

Jing Long |
Excelent, we finally found them.
Jing extends his arm and out pops a small twig. He utters a word while touching himself with the stick. A invisible barrier pops into existance as he drops the stick to the ground. He then draws a chakram from his belt and holds it at the ready.

So I don't think you can ready outside of combat so we are just preparing an ambush to get a surprise round. I think thats the plan for when they open the door.
Flik |
Cool. Then second round is…
Seeing his teammates similarly preparing, Flik draws a scroll and—in as quiet a voice as he can manage—activates it, immediately vanishing from view.
________
Draw (move) scroll and activate scroll of Invisibility (standard). My understanding is that he can do that in a whispered voice. Let me know if it’s otherwise, DM Jelani.
I'm hoping they remain unaware (though our activating the wands may change that), and I can open the door and get into the room before they can react.
If that happens, DM Jelani, I'd love to be able to see the map to make the best use of that move action. :)
Flik |
So I don't think you can ready outside of combat so we are just preparing an ambush to get a surprise round. I think thats the plan for when they open the door.
You can't, by the rules. It was me just using poor language. I was basically just trying to let you guys know that I was intentionally making sure you two were ready before Flik used the scroll. :)
DM Jelani |
Nothing happens during the first round of preparatory buffs, though Flik perception: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (20) + 17 = 37 can hear them also preparing on the other side of the door. He hears two voices casting spells. Go ahead an post/activate your second round of prep actions. You got one round on them before they heard you activating wands. So you've had two rounds to prep to their one.
Jing Long |
Jing watches Flik closely and the door. When the door doesn't open he speaks a few divine words as his god's favor washes over him. He then gives a nod to Flik showing he is ready for the door to be open.
Now or never. They mush have heard us. They must be preparing as well.

Standard: read scroll. Move: If I have this figured out correctly, Flik is invisible in one of the squares in front of the door, and Jing is standing in the other; I want to be right behind Jing.
