Appearance::

Hrothgar is an imposing figure, heavily built, standing around 6'4, and covered from head to toe in scars. He wears a simple green tunic, baggy brown linen britches with various patches and tears in them kept up by a pair of suspenders, and weathered looking leather boots. On his head sits a wide brimmed leather hat with an eagle feather protruding from it. One of his eyes is missing, and he wears an eye patch with the mark of Erastil to cover it. He crops his thin black hair short and covers it with his hat. His hands are callused and his finger nails are cracked. His arms are thick as birch trees. His one remaining eye is a piercing green color, vivid as the new spring. A perpetual frown is set upon his face, unflinching and unmoved. Two small tusks hang from the corners of his mouth and his skin has a slight green tint. A simple longbow and quiver sit upon his back, carefully placed so as to be almost immediately accessible at a moment’s notice if danger were to strike. Hrothgar looks about constantly, ever vigilant, never letting his guard down entirely. There's almost a look of panic in his eyes as he looks around, panic mingled with rage.

Backstory::

Hrothgar was conceived in a small rural farming community on the border between Belkzen and Ustalav. During a raid committed by an orcish tribe, Hrothgar's mother was taken by one of the raiders in less than savory circumstances. She became pregnant, had a violent pregnancy, and died giving birth to Hrothgar. Hrothgar's mother's parents were both killed in the raid, so it was left up to the community to raise Hrothgar. As a reminder of the raid and all of the townspeople that were lost, he received cold treatment at best and cruel treatment at worst. He was beaten by his peers and shunned by his elders, always given the least amount of food and the poorest place to sleep. He lost his eye when a bunch of kids started throwing rocks at him, trying to drive him out of town. He told the elders what had happened, but no one believed him and no one cared.
Slowly but surely, he learned to stand up for himself and put out a tough exterior so that people wouldn't beat up on him. As he started to grow up and fill out, he began to be feared instead of hated. Despite his loss of an eye, he proved to be a prodigy at archery, and taught himself to hunt in the wilderness to supplement his meals. Never given anything by the townsfolk, he learned to steal from it, taking what he knew would not be noticed. He intimidated a bunch of the other boys in town without families to join him in stealing and camping outside the town under the stars. They would overpower the other children in the town, often leaving them with nasty wounds. When the elders began to catch on to what was going on, they told Hrothgar to leave or they would kill him. Hrothgar gathered together the other misfit children and in the dead of night robbed the town blind and then made his departure. The children lived as bandits, traveling through Ustalav, going from town to town, stealing what they could and leaving before the authorities could chase them away. They joined up with a number of other bandit groups operating in Ustalav. Eventually, they left for the Stolen Lands for easier pickings. Hrothgar became more and more cruel as time went on, beating up his fellow bandits to take what they stole and killing more and more people when they robbed caravans and towns. Beneath his exterior was a lack of trust and a fear of other people that the lifestyle of a bandit only encouraged. His cruelty gained him considerable POWER within the troupe of bandits, and he was quickly promoted to the level of lieutenant. His intimidating presence acted as a tool to keep the other bandits in line, and he was greatly feared by his fellow men. But this only caused his own fear to grow, festering inside of him like a disease, making him increasingly more and more cruel. Eventually, after pillaging the River Kingdoms, the bandit troupe, meeting up with even more bandit troupes, settled into the area of the Stolen Lands.
There was a small town on the outskirts of the Stolen Lands, and Hrothgar was picked to lead a raid in order to ransack the town and take from it as much as he could. The villagers put up more resistance than expected and caused Hrothgar's men to flee, leaving him behind. Abandoned by his fellow bandits, Hrothgar fell into the hands of the townspeople. He expected them to kill him right away for his crimes, but instead they offered him a choice. He could either be hanged or he could help repair the damage that he had caused in the raid, working as a bondsman until he eventually won back his freedom. Hrothgar decided to work as a bondsman in the town instead of forfeiting his life, figuring that when the time came he would make his escape. The townsfolk gave him hard work to do, patching up houses and fixing the town's well, but they were suprisingly fair to him despite the actions he had taken against them. They never mistreated him or beat him despite the power they had over him, and after a hard day's work in the sun they would always offer him a warm meal and a tall glass of ale along with a seat at the communal table. At night, Hrothgar was given a warm bed in the Church of Erastil, never shackled down, only watched by the ever vigilant eye of the parish priest. Hrothgar was taken aback by the small kindnesses done for him by the village, and for the first time in his life he was treated as something besides a monster. He knew that they weren't delusional, because their eyes were always on him, waiting for him to try something. But he also knew that they were giving him a real chance to become something different. One day after work, Hrothgar asked the parish priest for permission to allow him to go out to the archery range and fire a bow again. The parish priest obliged him, on the condition that he would accompany him along with two other men from the town. Hrothgar was allowed to briefly fire his bow again, and the others joined in. The parish priest, impressed with Hrothgar's potential as a marksman despite his absent eye, began instructing him in archery. Over the months, the bond between the parish priest and Hrothgar grew as they went out to the archery range more and more. Each time they went out to shoot, the parish priest would not only instruct Hrothgar in archery, but also in the legends of Erastil and his faith. Eventually, there was a festival for Erastil in the town and an archery tournament that accompanied it. The parish priest allowed Hrothgar to participate, and groomed him for months beforehand, teaching him everything he knew about the bow and about marksmanship. When the contest came, Hrothgar won it and dedicated the prize to his mentor and his new god. At this moment, the town gave way from suspicion to acceptance, and declared Hrothgar a free man and one of their own. Hrothgar served the town loyally as servant to the parish priest and servant to the first people who had accepted him. He lived amongst them for two years in happiness and prosperity.
Then the unthinkable happened. While Hrothgar was out hunting, the bandits mounted a raid against the village and destroyed it. Every man, woman, and child was killed. Hrothgar was broken by it. All of these people who he had grown to love and who had grown to love him were now dead. He knew that he couldn't take on the bandits alone, so he went out to Brevoy and hid there for a while. When the charter to tame the Stolen Lands and kill the bandits came to him, Hrothgar understood that it was his perfect opportunity for revenge.

Personality::

Even though Hrothgar is barely out of his boyhood, he has lived through enough tragedy and hardship to take up several adult lives. Remembering the darkness hopeless existence of a bandit contrasted against the hard but good life of a law abiding citizen, Hrothgar clings to his newfound FAITH in Erastil as the last thing that's keeping him human. Hrothgar wants revenge, but he never wants to return to being the beast that he had become. Hrothgar may seem intimidating at first and harsh when it comes to emotions and misfortunes, but that's only because he's experienced so much rejection in his life. Once Hrothgar has decided to become your friend, he will do anything to protect that bond. But he's a difficult man to befriend. Suspicious, sometimes hostile, and resolutely determined to achieve justice for his village, Hrothgar will do whatever it takes, even if it means sacrificing himself, to achieve his goals.
