Background:
Elern was born a historian: his father was one, his grandfather was one, and the other past twenty-seven generations seemed to suggest that Elern would be one too. Elem was expected to memorize most of the dwarven scriptures, a task he found tiresome. Dwarven history is written bluntly and straight-forward, without much extravagance on even the most heroic tales. Thus, Elern turned to human tales, what few he found within the labyrinths of the dwarven libraries. There he learned the wanderlusts of adventure, as well as the beauty of words. Elern began to write his own stories, rewriting history into epics. They were no masterpieces - but Elern felt they certainly read better and brought more excitement to the events of past.
It became a habit in all things for Elern to romanticize the past, extending his tales to those of elven and even orc culture, when he was lucky enough to hear of them. There were those who disapproved, telling Elern he was disrespecting the past through his edits to it. Elern noted that was true, but felt that he wasn’t trying to write history, but rather stories. As such, Elern was no longer called “Historian” but “Storyteller,” a title, he much better prefered.
Elern may have never considered leaving his dwarven home, writing at his desk, if not for a traveling rumor about his clan of a strange land known as Numeria - not too far off, a week’s travel at most - that was full of strange beings that relied not on magic, but something known as technology. Elern was at first giddy, wanting to learn of this technology and how it had shaped the stories of such a land, but was disappointed to hear of nothing. It seemed that the technology was hard to come by and deeply regulated, and thus not one piece exited the land.
Elern, in a typical stubborn dwarf manner, decided that if the technology would not make way to him, he would make his way to technology. Packing his belongings, his equipment, and of course his favorite tales, he set out of his mountain on the trek to Numeria. Visiting libraries along the way, he picked up what small details he could of the strange land, including the ancient language of which most texts were written in. He could not fully master the language, with most of the texts being incomplete, but he felt confident that he could translate most of it.
Torch was to be his first destination in his journey across Numeria - he had heard of the amazing purple flame that was the town’s mark. Surely, he could record that in his scrolls, for such a sight had to be tremendous. Thus was his disappointment, then, when he reached the town, seeing its light gone out.
However, there was still much to be seen, as Elern mused to himself. Making his way to a local tavern, he made preparations to find some technology in the town - and if that went south, to move on.
Appearance and Personality:
Elern was born with smooth brown hair, which he frequently combs. He prefers a braid in the back, but recently has not been able to get one as he cannot reach behind himself to do it, and he has no other to assist him. He keeps a pen and scroll on the front of his belt, pulling them off only to record something he finds interesting. He prefers thicker clothes, more sensitive to cold weather. A wooden symbol of Torag, given by his father, hangs from a necklace. When he speaks, he tends to rely on fluffy rhetoric, and his low yet loud voice carries great weight with it.
Elern writes down anything he finds even slightly more than mundane, sometimes drawing rudimentary pictures. At night, he prefers to rerecord the notes into more extravagance before going to bed. He has many fears of getting lost, comfortable with the more familiar walls of dwarven caves than the great outdoors. Elern is still as gruff as a dwarf is, but he tends to approach people for questions readily and knows not to rely on his own wisdom in most cases.
