    Revelations:

    Focused Trance (Ex) (3/day): Calamys can enter a deep meditation, blocking out visual and auditory stimuli and allowing him to concentrate on a single problem, philosophical issue, or memory. This trance lasts 1d6 rounds, during which time he can only take move actions. During this period, he gains a bonus equal to his level on all saves against sonic effects and gaze attacks. When he comes out of his trance, he may make a single Intelligence-based skill check with a +20 circumstance bonus. He may enter your focused trance a number of times per day equal to his Charisma modifier. With great concentration Calamys may retreat into the library of his own mind to seek out the knowledge stored therein.

    Sidestep Secret (Su): His innate understanding of the universe has granted Calamys preternatural reflexes and the uncanny ability to step out of danger at the very last second. He adds his Charisma modifier (instead of his Dexterity modifier) to his Armor Class and all Reflex saving throws. His armor’s maximum Dexterity bonus applies to his Charisma instead of his Dexterity. His enlightenment has allowed Calamys to intuitively respond to environmental stimuli without the burden of rational thought.

    Whenever Calamys is in combat, he can only speak and understand Celestial. This does not interfere with spellcasting, but it does apply to spells that are language dependent. He gains the selected language as a bonus language.

    Concept & Background:

    Concept in brief: An acolyte of Candlekeep out to experience the world first hand. His Lore revelations aren’t divinatory in nature, but rather reflect an enhanced ability to absorb information for recall (Focused Trance, which I picture being similar in function to Sherlock’s mind palace though different in flavor, being more of a “mind library”) and for subconscious processing (Sidestep Secret.) He assumes his powers are granted to him by Deneir, whom he always had a fondness for and now openly reveres. He travels Faerun, connecting with local merchants to arrange for the sale and shipment of texts from Candlekeep, as well as providing scribe services (letter writing and such) for those unfortunates who aren’t literate or could not otherwise afford them.

    Personality: He’s friendly, optimistic, and excited to gain first hand knowledge of the world, but tries to remember to temper his enthusiasm with caution, knowing that he’s likely an easy mark to those more worldly than he. His curiosity in academic matters is near insatiable, and he will quietly listen for hours to dissertations and explanations on almost any topic; when asked even the simplest of questions on matters which he is himself informed, he will likewise wax poetic in his response, providing qualifying and tangential details at exhaustive depths if allowed. He believes that the best way to save knowledge against loss is not to guard it under lock and key, but to disseminate it to as many people as possible.

    Background in brief: Calamys was orphaned at a young age in Beregost, but his displays of insight and intellect earned him a position in Candlekeep. There he was taught his letters and raised as a lowly scribe working towards full indoctrination into their order. Through the endless drudgery of copying texts for archive and sale he kept himself engaged by reading and absorbing everything he transcribed, and he always dreamed of some day visiting the places and peoples of the histories and maps he duplicated. When the Time of Troubles was resolved he was struck with his gift/curse; unearthly voices spoke to him from the air, telling him secrets of logic and thought to expand his mind and instilling in him the power to channel the divine. Once his abilities had been proven he rose greatly in esteem within Candlekeep and was accepted into their ranks, but soon the thought of spending the remainder of his days chanting out ancient prophecies and copying the records of other’s deeds was more than he could bear. Unwilling to outright desert those who’d taught and raised him, he instead negotiated his assignment as a mercantile liaison, forging contacts and connections to sell the books Candlekeep creates as well as keeping an eye out for rare tomes whose acquisition would complement the grand library.

    NPC Contacts: Indicia was his mentor at Candlekeep, a matronly human woman of advanced years who serves as one of the many curators of the Keep’s legendary library. Calamys writes her letters every week to keep her informed of his goings-ons.

    Tataniel Duskmane is a Moon Elf merchant who trades in books both old and new; she and Calamys have crossed paths several times over the past several years. While their relationship is technically a professional one, each has found that they enjoy the other’s company, and when they meet and trade they always conclude their business over an evening of friendly food and drink.
