About Bellis the Cat

Background:

Ever since a raven turned into a wolverine midair and landed on the back of a ambushing thug, Bellis has proven to be a useful, if sometimes maddening, companion. He is, as he is quick to explain, not *the* Bellis Cat (a character in a popular children's story who looks like a striped cat, and is known for slowly turning invisible), nor associated with the town of Bellis. It is, he claims, simply his name.

He says little about his past, and what he says he often contradicts a few days later. What's obvious is that, while he generally appears to be a large black housecat with a small red collar, in truth he's anything but. He seems to have some kind of connection with the fey, displaying the same resistance to weapons not made of cold iron that they do, but he flat-out denies actually being a fey creature himself.

His collar is another enigma, a thin red band with no buckles or other means of removal. When asked about it, he insists it's simply supposed to be there, and that absolutely no one can touch it. No matter what form he takes, it remains visible, and it's definitely magic, but it seems to hide its true purpose and power somehow. It doesn't seem to do anything visible, though.

Since the day he showed up, Bellis has insisted on helping out with various cases. And the truth is, he is pretty useful, being able to travel unnoticed in the form of a cat or a crow, then turn into a larger, more powerful form to fight. The fact that his wages are fresh fish, clean water, a warm spot to sleep, and a steady supply of new books to read makes him cheaper than a lot of other possible helps.

Observations

Some things Zota has observed about Bellis:

*He can take the form of most any land animal or bird from the size of a large rat to the size of a wolf.
*He has darkvision and scent, and is generally quite perceptive.
*He knows an oddly large variety of languages, including a couple of dead ones.
*He knows a little about a wide variety of subjects, but the only subjects he knows in any depth are history, literature, geography, and nature.
*In addition to changing forms, he has a limited ability to heal himself.
