Pathfinder Extinction Curse Adventure Path: The Apocalypse Prophet book cover

OPM Musings

But I would walk 500 miles and I would walk 500 more…

With the calendar turned to 2021 and vaccines starting to rollout, we’ve got a chance that some of us will actually get to travel to conventions. Unfortunately, we aren’t quite at the point where it is safe to attend events in person. So for the next few months, our presence will remain digital. We’re in talks with a few shows about being virtual guests and will let you know more as soon as we make the final determinations. If you have a digital show between now and April and would like some organized play participation, please email the team at organizedplay@paizo.com with your event particulars.

Not traveling gives us a few more months of internal process smoothing and a chance to finalize a few projects. In addition, Alex’s first anniversary at Paizo approaches. His presence on the team brought much needed stability to program functions and the venture-officer support. I look forward to doing even more now that we’ve acclimated him into the program. Most of the planned projects involve behind the scenes activities, but we hope that they make the forward-facing aspects even better for our community.

Alright, that’s enough musing from me. Without further ado, let’s get to the list of updates for this month!

New OP Developer

As we announced in last week’s blog, Mike Kimmel has joined the team as our newest developer! A prolific Paizo freelancer, Mike wrote many beloved adventures for Organized Play, such as Starfinder Society Scenario #1-22: The Protectorate Petition and Pathfinder Society Scenario #7–10: The Consortium Compact, as well as backmatter for Pathfinder Adventure Path #135: Runeplague and parts of several Lost Omens rulebooks. He also founded the Freelance Forge community, a forum for current and prospective RPG freelancers. You’ll hear more from him next week, but we’re thrilled to bring him on board and can’t wait to see what our fully-staffed team produces going forward!

Digitization

We originally set the final day for Fame purchases in Pathfinder Society as December 31st. I’m happy to say we all took a much needed holiday break. This does make getting final decisions through the pipeline a bit problematic. So we decided to push the deadline out to January 31st, 2021. This is it, though, the final extension. Once February hits, Fame will be gone as a purchasable currency.

We know there are still a few items that we haven’t imported to either AcP or faction reputation or game rewards. We took the transition process slowly to make sure we’re doing it right and not breaking anything more than we had to. Some of the outstanding items, such as a method of bequeathing rewards between character and alternative methods to revive dead characters, are questions we will answer in the next few weeks and will share with you once we make decisions.

Sanctioning

Right before Christmas, we announced sanctioning for the latest Pathfinder adventure, Troubles in Otari, which offers a great transition from Beginner Box play to utilizing the full Pathfinder ruleset.

We’re also excited to announce that the Starfinder Society Additional Resources have now been updated! This update includes the character options from the Threefold Conspiracy adventure path, which were accidentally passed over when we released the chronicles.

Looking forward, work on Pathfinder Adventure: The Slithering nears completion and we hope to upload sanctioning before the end of the month. After that, we’ll shift gears to rulebooks, focusing on Starfinder Alien Archive 4 and the upcoming Pathfinder Lost Omens: Ancestry Guide (releasing in February), before we jump back into adventures. We’ll keep you all updated as we have news to share.

GM Achievements

Whether stars, novas, or glyphs, achieving a 5 ranking in any program involves a substantial amount of time. To achieve the 5th milestone, a GM must run 150 games, of which at least 50 must be unique scenarios and 10 special scenarios, as well as run between one and three games for venture-captains (program dependant). A conservative estimate of the time needed to reach the 5th milestone is 650 hours!

One GM received their fifth star in the last month. We had no one reach 5 Novas or 5 Glyphs.

5th Star: Shannon Petrosky

Congratulations to our new 5 Star GM, and thank you for your dedication!

Conventions

In their holiday message and update, Gen Con announced that they were postponing badge registration and event submission until they have a better idea of what the year will bring. Once we know their plan, we’ll have more info to share about volunteering for that event. We’ll have information on volunteering for other Paizo-sponsored conventions soon as well. There are just a few questions left to answer before we are ready to push go!

Otherwise, we have a few events on the calendar already to look forward to in 2021! If you don’t see a convention on the list that you think should be there, contact the event organizer and ask them to register their event for organized play support.

There's nothing on the My Organized Play page? If there is I couldn't find it.

Is there a list somewhere of boons and fame cost?

It was removed to the retired rewards when Fame was first removed:

Faction Boons.

As others have pointed out, Fame was part of the season 1 rewards that are no longer being earned starting with season 2. Depending on how long you have been playing, you may not have a lot of Fame to spend.

What can be purchased depends on your Fame Tier as outlined in the Legacy Rewards section of the Guide.

To help, is there something you are looking for?

One character has 106, one has 74.

Not looking for anything in particular. Just wanted to use them for something useful before they're gone, if I can.

106 is improbably high but not totally impossible unless the character is lvl 9+ from applying AP/module credits especially with a second character at 70+

I would say surprisingly high rather than improbable, but you may want to have someone check your math.

26 scenarios @ 4 fame
13 Quests @ 1 fame
4 Faction meta rewards x 2 characters at @ 2 fame
1 module @ 12 fame
1 AP w/ 6 parts @ 12 fame each
4 repayable scenarios
= ~233 fame possible on 2 characters if you played everything that granted fame and got all the fame every time.

Fame isn't tracked (correctly) on the Org Play page. What it shows there as fame is your total reputation. Reputation will almost always be higher than fame.

For example:
my -2001 has 104 total rep, but only ever earned 88 fame.
my -2002 has 72 total rep, but only ever earned 56 fame.

Okay, I'll have to check my chronicle sheets. I should still have a goodly amount. Honestly, the only thing that really appeals to me in that list are the hireling boons.

By the last time fame was recorded, I have 80 and 25.

Sczarni 5/5 5/55/5 ***

As a word of caution, you can only slot 1 Hireling Boon per Adventure, so purchasing multiple different Hirelings has little use anymore.

Grand Lodge 4/5 **** Venture-Captain, California—Sacramento

You can take as many as you want, you just can only *benefit* from one. (So as soon as you use one, you lose access to the others for the rest of the session.)

Slot one. Benefit from one. Potato potato. Same word of caution.

Can I start a hireling at master level?

You start with the basic Hireling and upgrade it step by step.

Yes, but can I do all the steps at once? Hireling, Expert Hireling, Professional Hireling and Master Hireling costs 26, which I have.

Yes, provided you have the required reputation level for each stage.

And you use the previous tiers of Reputation, not the new ones.

Well, he has exactly 90 reputation with Verdant Wheel. That's tier 4 in the old system, but only tier 3("Admired") in the new system.

Correct, so for Fame purchases he would be Tier 4.

Okay, I'm gonna write it up on my last Chronicle Sheet. Any suggestions for skills?

Scarab Sages 4/5

Yeah, the best use I've found for fame is getting to a Master hireling, which you'd have to wait until 120 reputation to get in the new system.

Getting multiple hirelings when you can't use fame for much else is better than nothing. You can wait until a relevant skill comes up in the scenario to decide which you're using (as I understand it). My Rogue now travels with members of his former circus troupe.

EDIT: Keep in mind that if you get Professional Hireling as well, then you're getting access to 2 lore skills in addition to the main skill for each hireling. Having 2 hirelings mean having 4 lores, which are much more likely to be things the rest of the group doesn't have covered, but also not as likely to need all of them in the same scenario.

Well, the two that seem to come up most often that he doesn't have are Medicine and Society. There's usually a healer of some type, but not having Society hurts sometimes. None of the skill feats for that seem useable though. Just looked at my sheet and he also doesn't have Crafting. That comes up fairly often.

Lore-wise, he has Goblin Lore, Swamp Lore, and Scouting Lore.

Pathfinder Lost Omens, Rulebook, Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

I have enough fame to get three hirelings fully statted. That's three skills, three skills feats and six lores.

Dark Archive 4/5 ***

I would consider picking medicine.

True, 2e has plenty of healing options: Divine and Primal casters can prep heal, Occult casters may have soothe, Alchemists might make elixirs, everybody can pick healing potions from school items (or buy them), and anyone can pick up medicine.
Sometimes though, you might end up in a party that has none or very little off-combat healing, and having a medicine hireling in your backpocket could be useful.

Another one is Survival. Not needed very often, but it also seems to be a kind of a rare skill to be picked. While you rarely need survival, it's one of those skills that when you do need it, consequences for not having it could be dire (such as not finding your way to your target and wasting precious hours, or getting totally lost!).

Society seems a pretty common skill and not as dangerous to be lacking, but crafting could be really useful in some situations.

What languages do hirelings speak?

Liberty's Edge 4/5 5/55/55/5 ****

Hirelings follow the same rules as PCs for languages. So if it is available to the PC it is avaialbe to the hireling.

I originally read the question as "What languages doe HALFINGS speak?". So my answer was going to really dumb.

Scarab Sages 4/5

I don't think you can just pick extra languages for a hireling by default. I assume they're Common only without something else. A Translator is a specific kind of hireling available to Grand Archive.

I don't know how Multilingual interacts with Professional Hireling. Presumably if they are trained in Society, they could take it, and then the only thing to fall back on is what Gary said. But can a hireling have a home region? Or is it based off of the character's Home Region? Probably the latter, even if it doesn't make sense for the hireling's backstory.

Grand Archive 4/5 ****

medicine + Assurance is pretty solid for OOC healing.

Society + Multilingual.

Craft + alchemical craft

would be my go to.

Liberty's Edge 4/5 5/55/55/5 ****

On a personal note, I hope players will not look allowing other players to use their skills, even if the hireling may be a little better. These hirelings should not be used to outshine the other characters.
