Paizo at Gen Con

Paizo live at Gen Con with the Know Direction network.

It’s finally here! Pathfinder Second Edition launches TOMORROW, and the center of action is Gen Con, where Paizo is already assembled in anticipation of the big day! Throughout the four-day show, we’ll be pulling back the curtain on future Pathfinder Second Edition releases, revealing exciting plans for Starfinder, and hosting dozens of panel discussions and presentations that take you behind the scenes of the world of Paizo.

You can follow along LIVE all weekend long on the Official Paizo Twitch channel. We’ll also be uploading tons of on-the-scene photos and videos to our social media every day of Gen Con. Be sure to follow Paizo on Facebook, Twitter, Twitch, and Instagram to see everything as it’s happening!

The Paizo Booth

Paizo’s massive trade booth looms like a big purple castle immediately inside Gen Con’s cavernous Exhibit Hall. We’re at Booth #103 all weekend long, with piles and piles of Pathfinder Second Edition releases just waiting for your upcoming adventures. At the booth you’ll find walk-up demos, Paizo staffers eager to answer questions or help you find exactly what you’re looking for, and factory-fresh copies of the Pathfinder Core Rulebook, Pathfinder Bestiary, Pathfinder Adventure Path #145: Hellknight Hill and Pathfinder Adventures: Fall of Plaguestone, a raft of new accessories, and a host of other Pathfinder Second Edition releases from Paizo and our licensed partners. We’ll also have the latest releases for Starfinder, the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, and other fun stuff. Be sure to stop by early each day for a free collectible Pathfinder or Starfinder pin (while supplies last)!

An overhead map of Exhibit Hall J, where Paizo's 2019 Gen Con booth is located.

Organized Play

Paizo takes over the entire Sagamore Ballroom for Gen Con, with non-stop gaming in a huge hall covered with awesome banners featuring our iconic characters! Here, on the second floor of the Indianapolis Convention Center, you’ll find thousands of gamers playing Pathfinder Society, Starfinder Society, and Pathfinder Adventure Card Society scenarios all weekend long, 24 hours a day! Stop by and see what you’ve been missing—or jump into a game yourself!

Each of Paizo’s three organized play campaigns has its own collectible pin available for free in the Sagamore Ballroom. Stop by and ask how to get yours at Organized Play HQ, on the raised platforms against the back wall.

We’ll also have a satellite Paizo store just outside the Sagamore Ballroom, at the top of the escalators where the Crossroads and Sagamore concourses meet. The satellite store will carry a limited selection of Paizo products, focusing on new Pathfinder Second Edition releases to help Pathfinder Society players grab their books quickly and conveniently without having to spend a game slot standing in line in the Exhibit Hall. Note that the satellite store accepts credit card transactions and subscription pick-ups only.

An overhead map of the Sagamore Ballroom, Paizo's 2019 organized play headquarters.

Seminars

An army of Paizo game designers, developers, editors, graphic design professionals and members of Paizo’s warehouse and customer service departments will be on hand at Gen Con this year, giving you the chance to meet some of the fine folks who create Pathfinder and Starfinder. While most of us can be found in Paizo’s Exhibit Hall booth (come say hi!), we’ve also created a slate of seminars and presentations to give you a behind-the-scenes look at Paizo’s games, sneak peeks at upcoming products, rules Q&As, and more!

Join us in our dedicated Paizo Seminar HQ in room ICC: 212, on the second floor of the Indianapolis Convention Center, near the Sagamore Ballroom and Paizo’s satellite store.

Check out the daily seminar schedules below, and stop by and join the fun. Can’t make it to Gen Con? Catch us online at the Official Paizo Twitch channel, with special hosts Know Direction! We’ll also have two special events on the Gen Con Main Stage (more on that below). All times Eastern.

The PRD (2e.aonprd.com) launches at 7 AM PST (which is 2 PM GMT, if I'm correct). I would expect the PDF's to be released at the same time.

Assuming that the UK hasn't abolished British Summer Time and it is still five hours ahead of the Eastern time zone, the critical local time there would be 3 p.m. That would still be 2 p.m. GMT since technically GMT does not spring forward or fall back.

I hope the servers haven't melted by the time I wake up to get the PDFs.

I'm considering sacrificing and old PCI audio interface and an early Win 7 era laptop to appease the capricious spirits of technology so we have a smooth launch.

Do we know when they are likely to be announcing new things? Or should I just spam "refresh" for the next 4 days until some news pops up?

That Saturday 4 p.m. "Pathfinder 2019 and Beyond" panel looks to be the most promising time for that.

Pretty much everything we'll be announcing at Gen Con should be covered in that panel. (A few things will be announced in relevant panels that happen before that one, so it may not be the earliest source of all news, but it should be the most thorough.)

Paizo Employee Chief Technical Officer

The blog currently says the Saturday 4 PM seminar is "Pathfinder 2019 and Beyond," but it's really "Paizo 2019 and Beyond." We'll get that fixed.

Even better!

That means that this panel will include new Starfinder stuff as well as Pathfinder stuff.

So that gives them an hour to hype the stuff released at Gen Con, give additional details about items to be released between now and early next year, and actually announce items beyond those that they have put up product pages for.

From watching the Twitch feeds: Jason has repeatedly confirmed that the Paizo 2019 and Beyond panel is the one where new stuff will be announced, so we should have some product news in just a few hours.

    Absalom, so much Absalom!! <3

One AP on Isle of Kortos, 1 Ap entirety in Absalom. A module set in Absalom that goes over the details of Aroden's life , written by Eric Mona, A Hardcover book and Huge poster map of Absalom!!!!

Abslaom has always been one of my favorite parts of the setting (I used the heck outta tge old 64 page Campaign Setting , ran a couple one shots and one long campaign with 1e), after a break and coming back to 2e, this couldn't make me happier!!!

4 people marked this as a favorite.

Made a few extra notes for some of the products:
January - Lost Omens Gods & Magic
    - details on all gods
    - index of deities with domains, favored weapons and more
    - new domains, feats and spells to customize your character based on their faith

    January/February - GameMastery Guide
    - Subsystems like chase rules, research, vehicle combat and more (or how to take certain elements out of the game, like no "+ level" to things etc.).
    - How to design monsters, adventures, campaigns and more
    - Extensive NPC stat block archive

    February The Dead God's Hand
    - 128-page hardcover adventure
    - Enormous dungeon crawl designed to launch a new campaign set in Absalom.
    - 1st level to 7th(?)

    March/April - Bestiary 2

July - Absalom: City of Lost Omens
    - huge poster map of the city

August - Absalom: City of lost omens poster map folio
    - 32-panel mega-poster

July - Agents of Edgewatch Adventure Path
    - Heroes are members of Absalom's City Watch, and must solve a series of bizarre murders, thefts, and destruction carried on a crime wave during a World's Fair-style celebration to re-open the city's Precipice District

    July - Advanced Player's Guide
    - Investigator, Oracle, Swashbuckler, Witch (October playtest)
    - 8 new ancestry - Aasimar, Catfolk, Changeling, Duskwalker, Dhampir, Kobold, Orc. Ratfolk, Tiefling, Tengu
    - New spells, archetypes (60) and other fun stuff
(pirate, acrobat, duelist, beast master, bounty hunter, poisoner, scout, assassin)

Interesting list of new classes. I would love to know why those were chosen, though I guess the investigator's sleuthing and swashbucklers cinematic combat would be great for APs and Society play moving forward, and the oracle and witch have always been fan favorites.

Any word on whether the 60 archetypes are class specific or generic/available to any class?

I really hope some monster creation rules drop before January's release of GMG.

Pathfinder Maps, Starfinder Adventure Path, Starfinder Maps, Starfinder Roleplaying Game, Starfinder Society Subscriber; Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

The archetypes that were named sound generic. With that many archetypes, though, I would be very surprised if none of them are class-specific. They need to provide an example of a class-specific archetype at some point, probably best if done before this book comes out.

    Grand Lodge

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Wow. I didn't think the Swashbuckler or the Investigator would make the cut as classes. They seem like they'd be perfect archetypes but then again, as full classes, we should get multiclass archetypes for them so we can mix and match with other classes.

Oracle and Witch are solid choices that I am looking forward to! I hope witch is the prepared caster whose patron determines which tradition they get access to but I can understand if they are the prepared occult caster. I'd just like the inquisitor get that job! Either way I hope the patron get more of a role in the class.

    My guesses would be:
    Magus - Arcane (SP)
    Inquisitor - Occult (PR)
    Oracle - Divine (SP)
    Shaman - Primal (SP)
    Witch - Any (Patron) (PR)

I just hope we don't have to wait for 5 years to get the psychic. The psychic made me depreciate psionics in my games.

I also hope to see the gunslinger early on. That is another iconic class from Paizo.

I'm really happy with the ancestries. That about covers the ones that I always gravitated to so if the next big book has dhampirs, fetchlings, kitsune, nagaji, strix and vishkanyas I'll be mega stoked! I'd also like to see ifrits, oreads, suls, sylphs and undines sooner than later but I understand that it will take time to get there.

The new archetypes look interesting. We'll be getting things that are generic enough to apply to all classes so I could do a liberator champion pirate for Skulls and Shackles. :D

I'm really hoping that we get updated 1E classes in the first couple of years so we can move on to new horizons and I'm really looking forward to what we get for new archetypes and ancestries. The future is looking good!

In the panel, they mentioned that Investigator lent itself well to the Agents of Edgewatch AP, and would do a lot with skills. Swashbuckler is intended to be the ultimate mobile combatant, and will be able to move about the battlefield like no other class. Oracle and witch were just super popular classes, and they wanted to play with curses and hexes, respectively.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Semi-transcribed the part about the Advanced Player's Guide from the panel:
Planetouched are heritages and should be applicable to all/most other ancestries.
Archetypes will be available to almost all classes, only a few that are special.
Archetypes: pirate, acrobat, duelist, beast master, gladiator, poisoner, assassin, bounty hunter, scout.
APG will also have backgrounds (Jason).
The investigator might have gotten "bumped" a bit as it fits so well with the Absalom AP coming out at the same time.
All the classes will not only fill a conceptual niche, but a mechanical one too.
The sorcerer touches on some of the mechanical stuff of the PF1 Oracle, so they're looking at how to make the PF2 Oracle unique.
Oracle will still have curses, but might go more back to its pan-theistic roots. Will have lots of Divine and probably some Occult elements to it.
With the Swashbuckler they're aiming for it to be the ultimate mobility warrior, you will be mobile in ways that other characters can only drool over. Mona mentions that he thinks the 3 action economy is especially interesting for martial characters and how they can marry that with the abilities we already know from the PF1 Swashbuckler.
The Investigator will be the skill heavy class that will be able to solve a lot of your problems through skill use.
The Witch will let them revisit familiars and, of course, hexes.

Hmmm... I'm sure reading too much into the arbitrary things they mentioned is ill advised... But I can't really feel "ultimate mobility" as critical element of Swashbuckler. I mean, above average mobility, sure... but Monk kind of already plays in the Ultimate Mobility space, and AFAIK there is other spaces where Swashbuckler can really shine like Panache/Grit/Luck mechanics that work with weapons or skills, and emphasizing either solo tricks or maybe even group tactics for cooperative inclined Swashbucklers.

I guess we'll see more what they are thinking come October...

    I’m being so spoilt. :)

I knew about the upcoming deities book and had guessed we’d get some campaign support for Absalom (but not TWO APs worth, plus a map folio - that is awesome).

The deck of many worlds had me very excited - I hope there are sequels (and deck of many cultures expansions and so forth).

The Near Space book has long been on my crossing fingers list.

The next year is going to be terrific.

Glad we're finally getting some Absalom adventures we can convert to P1e.

Nope. But that was by design. We literally took more books than we could actually sell given the number of cashiers that we had there. I didn't want a repeat of the Starfinder release where we ran out on Friday. So we took quite a lot. And sold more than we have ever sold of anything at GenCon. So it was a huge success for us.
