Pathfinder Battles: Remembering the Fallen

Tuesday, March 04, 2019

Now that we've shown off all the figures in the standard Ruins of Lastwall set of prepainted plastic miniatures over the past few weeks, that leaves just the premium set for today's blog. Over the history of the line, we've switched between extra-large figures like dragons and giants and hydras and themed dungeon dressing like the Rusty Dragon Inn and the Court of the Crimson Throne. For Ruins of Lastwall, we suggested a cemetery set to WizKids, who at first seemed hesitant to do it (we later learned that they were doing a similar set in their Icons of the Realms product line). When they heard the pieces we wanted to include, however, they got really excited. The end result is one of the most impressive sets of dungeon dressing I think I've ever seen.

Each Cemetery of the Fallen Setincludes a working cemetery gate, two 2" fence segments, four 4" fence segments, a mausoleum with removable roof, a mausoleum coffin, four each of two varieties of tombstone, and two each of two stone coffins.

Cemetery of the Fallen is also the first premium set to use new packaging that displays the content inside. You can see both the packaging and a sample set all laid out together at New York Toy Fair a few weeks ago.

That wraps up our previews for the Ruins of Lastwall release, due out later this spring from WizKids. When I next grace the blog with another preview, it'll likely be about the forthcoming Iconic Heroes Evolved set, also due out later this spring. Until then, don't split the party!

Sure, but I find life is much more pleasant when assuming positive intent from others unless there is a clear reason not to do so. Marco is in Germany, so it is probable that he hadn't yet received the mausoleum to know what's obvious to someone who does have one. The way I see it, Marco was simply asking about its dimensions because he is passionate about miniatures.

Fair enough, I see your point.

If that's the case, then i apologize, Marcos.

To answer your questions, I'm pretty certain it is 4 x 4 but will need to confirm the rest later as I am not home right now.

Well, it’s really hard to tell sometimes in written replies. But when you see comments in stating the obvious, or like “It is 4 x 4, isn’t it?”, it certainly does sound like sarcasm or being snarky.

I wasn't trying to be sarcastic, i really wanted to know the measurements (they are 3 x 3 actually). :-)

I really hate warped minis, i hope you'll receive a replacement, Hobbun.

As i am writing most posts from my mobile, i think i was writing that post before your post showed up, so that wasn't even a response but just a general question. ;-)

How does it look inside?

Are there squares?
It is 4' x 4', isn't it?

These can all be answered together. But inside the back wall of the mausoleum has a couple of running cracks on it, as if not completely structurally sound. In the front, there is a grated door that can be moved/swung, although it is stiff (which I think is a good thing). The floor is actually 3 x 3 (so 15' x 15'), and yes, there are definitive squares on the floor.

Marco Massoudi wrote:
2' tall?

Do you mean 2" in height? The total height of the mausoleum, from the highest portion of the round part of the roof to the ground is actually 4". Without the roof, it is just under 2 1/4" in height.

And those single minis are on sale now!

If you are anything like me, remember -- Your shopping cart can only hold 31 items. Be prepared to split your order if you want more than that many single minis.

and if you ane up with more than 400$ worth of singles, why not just get a case?

anyone got a case count btw.?

Dark Archive

Singles prices:

$3.50 for commons
$4.50 for small uncommons
$5 for medium uncommons
$8 for large uncommons
$9 for medium rares
$10 for dressings
$16 for large rares

30% off for subscribers.

Hmm. I only got the 15% discount for paizo advantage. People might want to check that if its supposed to be 30.

Pathfinder Starfinder Society Subscriber

I think it is 30% off for Pathfinder Battles minis subscribers. I have no idea whether or how that combines with Paizo Advantage.

In any event, my total was slightly under $240, so I don't think the case would have been quite worth it.

It is supposed to be 30% off for subscribers (and doesn’t stack).

Sorry, what I meant was that if you’re a subscriber, you might want to check it’s working properly as according to my confirmation email I only got 15% off.

I had two formian workers in my shopping cart

one at regular price
one at 30%

Just as a FYI, if you're counting pennies, some of the rare dressings are actually cheaper at other sites. Like Canopic Jars, they go between $3-5 on ebay.

But I went ahead and purchased 4 Crypt Walls and all were applied with the 30% discount.

I ordered three different poeces (all from Ruins of Lastwall) and they all received the 30% discount. Maybe the wrinkles have been ironed out?

Paizocon didn't have any mini reveals this year.
I don't expect any at UK game expo either.

As i know Wizkids, they will have "Legendary Adventures" preview packs for sale at Gen Con (today in 2 months).

10 days until order deadline for the regular "Legendary Adventures" set and we still don't know more about it than the 8 minis paint variants revealed on february 5th and the 4 regular minis revealed on february 19th, together with the "Goblin Village" incentive.

Here's what we know:

COMMON:
-Bugbear Skulker (m)
-Halfling Slinger (s)
-Goblin Guard (s)
-Goblin Dog-Slicer (s)
-Hobgoblin Soldier (m)

UNCOMMON:
-Armored Elf Soldier (m)
-Orc Battler (m)
-Orc Charger (m)
-Chimera (L)
-Dragon Turtle (H)
-Fire Giant (L)

RARE:
-Dwarf Sorcerer (m)

That's 12 out of 44 minis in the set.
I really need to know at least one more huge and one more large uncommon mini to decide if to order a case or not.

well, my case is waiting at customs now, looks like I can count minis before the single sale is over.

Dark Archive

I REALLY hope we'll get a minis reveal for a huge "Legendary Adventures" mini this week, otherwise i'll have to "blind-order".

I'll probably order two bricks & the "Goblin Village" then.
If there is an "Allgolthu" (Aboleth) in the set, i'll upgrade to a case.

One week to the order deadline at www.blackfire.eu!

I received my case the other day and then cancelled my subscription.

I appreciate it’s a message that’s been expressed many times by some of us (and that there’s many subscribers with the opposing view). Nonetheless, for the record, the reason I’m no longer going to buy these is the decision to include dungeon dressing pieces in the boosters and big set piece scenery as the promos.

I was struck by the scale, elaborate design and significant amount of packaging of the promo piece this time around and thought about what sort of spectacular monster that investment would have paid for. Likewise, the half a dozen dressing pieces yet again go in the bucket of all the other bits I never use and half a dozen rare minis I would get use out of haven’t been produced.

There’s clearly a market for them, but in my opinion scenery and props are not the same kind of thing as cast members. I strongly believe they should be in another, standalone line.

I totally understand that you and some other people don´t use 3D dressing pieces to "enhance" a "two-dimensional2 set-up with flip-mats and miniatures.

It costs time and the payout isn´t always worth it.
Personally i like to use some dressing pieces, but not for every battle or for social encounters.

There are some certain battle scenes, i like to use dressing pieces with to make them more memorable, but only if it really enhances the experience.

Dressing sets seem to sell better than gargantuan creatures, that´s why we see so many imo.
Cancelling your subscription is a way to show you are not supporting that model, but in my opinion a better way to show you don´t want dressing incentives, is to buy a case (or some bricks), but not choosing to buy the incentive for "Legendary Adventures".
I am not trying to change your decision here, because frankly i feel we are getting too many dressing sets lately to the seeming exclusion of creatures.

Let´s see:

01: Heroes & Monsters:
-Huge Black Dragon
02: Rise of the Runelords:
-Rune Giant
03: Shattered Star:
-Gargantuan Blue Dragon
04: Skull & Shackles:
-Brinebones (gargantuan) Skeletal Dragon
05: Legends of Golarion:
-Gargantuan Green Dragon
06: Wrath of the Righteous:
-Deskari, (gargantuan) Demon Lord of Locusts
07: Reign of Winter:
-Gargantuan White Dragon
08: The Lost Coast:
-Shemhazian Demon
09: Dungeon´s Deep (1st set with dressings):
-Gargantuan Red Dragon
10:The Rusty Dragon Inn (2nd set with dressings):
-The Rusty Dragon Bar
11: Deadly Foes (3rd set with dressings):
-Clockwork Dragon & Spawn of Cthulhu (both huge)
12: Crown of Fangs (4th set with dressings):
-Court of the Crimson Throne (5 creatures & dressings)
13: Maze of Death (5th set with dressings):
-Fire Elemental Lord & Air Elemental Lord (both huge)
14: Jungle of Despair (6th set with dressings):
-Hydra (huge with interchangeable heads)
15: Kingmaker (7th set with dressings):
-Huge Earth Elemental & Huge Water Elemental
16: Ruins of Lastwall (8th set with dressings):
-Cemetery of the Fallen

17: Legendary Adventures (no word on dressings)
-Goblin Village

Lets analyse the case incentives:
-8 gargantuan creatures
-8 huge creatures
-4 dressing playsets

In the beginning there were almost exclusively gargantuan minis.
Then it became a switch between dressing sets & huge minis.

With huge minis now being in normal boosters, the need for them to be in case incentives is zero.

That being said, i can totally understand Wizkids decision to make the first case incentive of a Pathfinder Battles Second Edition set which includes huge minis and which will have an increased booster price of $17.99 and brick price of $143.92 something they know that will sell.

I don´t think that every future case incentive will be a dressing/scenery set, but the first set needs to sell to be able to produce huge minis as part of future sets.

If people decide to not buy the set, there won´t be huge minis in future set´s boosters and the chances for gargantuan creatures are gona drop even lower.

So the best thing to do is to vote with your wallet and choose not to order the Goblin Village if you don´t like it, but to not buy any bricks or cases of the boosters is leading to the opposite of bringing back gargantuan creatures imo.

The good news is that Wizkids are already producing both seperate colossal minis (so far only for D&D) and their own line of ppm dressings (called Wizkids 4D).

We can´t expect any changes to the PFB line before sales data for "Legendary Adventures" is in.

The scenery isn’t the worst bit (though the extravagance of this one was kind of the straw that broke the camel’s back) - as you point out, I could always opt out of buying that.

It’s the eight pieces of furniture (which could be rare minis instead) which I’m subsidising that I really object to. The only way to make that point is to not buy sets which include them.

Has there been any word on whether the upcoming Starfinder Battles line will have any impact on the Pathfinder Battles line in terms of frequency of release?

I think Erik once wrote that the dressings don't replace anything and their absence wouldn't mean more rare creatures.

I don't remember exactly where and when that was, but look at the "Icons of the Realms" line: the alternative would be invisible variants.

Wizkids won't change out the dressings against more of the common or uncommon creatures imo, as A: a chair, table or rack are easier/cheaper to produce and paint and B: for every person that doesn't like them, there is one person who does.

But who knows: Atm Wizkids are very experimental and the set composition of "Legendary Adventures" hasn't really been revealed - no word yet if it includes dressing pieces - the press release left that sentence out - normally it includes a sentence about dressings.

I don't expect any anouncements until at least Gencon, but probably as early as next year.

I'm not expecting them to change anything based on my cancellation.

I'm just no longer going to buy 120 minis I want and 8 I dont each case and I believe in telling companies why I'm ceasing being a customer (when its a longterm, systemic thing).

Are you still going to buy singles you want from "Legendary Adventures"?

For example the huge Dragon Turtle?
I sure hope there is a huge Aboleth, ahem Allgolthu in the set. ;-)

For what it's worth, i hope that dungeon dressing becomes a seperate line and that we'll get a gargantuan Neothelid & some other creatures in the future. :-)

Probably. A dragon turtle would be neat, for sure. Not so desperate for an aboleth (I’ve got some large ones of those and the veiled master. Accurate size representation isn’t so important to me).

Things I don’t have good proxies for will be definite buys though.

Steve Geddes wrote:

they aren‘t replacing rares, the replace uncommons.

and while it is a bit annoying that the torture rack and funeral bed replaced a large figure, when they would easily have fit in as a medium, I at least had no need for any of the uncommon large they replaced.

I‘m more peeved that I ended up with three large gold dragons.
but with a simple paint scheme as that, there was no way to make them rare.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

they currently include eight minis of six, fiddly sculpts. They could be six new fiddly monsters, one per brick with only two of them each case being repeats - that’s what I mean by rare. (I’m using it as a regular, old adjective).

Wizkids is REALLY invested in their new "Wizkids 4D" line of scenery.

They have announced multiple pre-painted sets for fantasy (jungle shrine, Dungeon tiles, Castle Barracks), modern (gas station) and even science-fiction (starship interior)!

As a result, i could see that they change/remove the dressing pieces from the PFB line in the future, but that is just a possibility.

I now ordered two bricks of "Legendary Adventures" & the goblin village through my FLGS, as i only know the identity of one huge mini (out of six) in the set.

That should get me the four uncommon huge ones (some of them once and some twice) and the four uncommon larges which i assume are in the set.
Also i will get two of the four rares (2 large and two huge), more if there are no dungeon dressings in the set.

As this is the very first set for Second Edition, the first one to include huge minis in the regular boosters and the first one in years with a price increase, it is possible that changes in the set composition are made.

Question @Mark Moreland:

-Are dressing pieces still included in this set?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Wizkids putting out settings sets does seem to be a great way to offer those who like the dressing pieces whole themed sets of them while allowing the mini sets to get back to their roots of all characters and creatures. For my part, losing eight of duplicates of uncommon creatures was not a huge loss for the dressing pieces, but I am definitely more interested in getting a complete set of related pieces instead of a few here or there that might eventually build up to something.

Our group certainly has used the spell effects while gaming. Rope Trick, Mage Hand, and the Wall of Ice pieces have been the most popular.

The Burning Braziers, Book of the Damned, Altar and most recently the Crypt Wall have all seen game time and enhanced the experience.

As a long time collector, many of the creatures and characters are not the first of their kind to be offered, so I don’t really need as many of them since they will be supplementing what I already have. Since this is the case, substituting dungeon dressing for a few of those duplicates didn’t bother me at all. But, I have to wonder how someone would feel buying a single booster, and getting something like the Brambly Bush instead of the large piece that it replaced. For this reason, I am in favor of moving the dressing pieces off to their own line. There is definitely a market for pre-painted dressing pieces, they seem to get gobbled up on the singles market (although they are usually rare, or uncommon at best). Hopefully, if they are segregated out to their own sets, they will sell well enough to support their existence. The Castle Barracks and Jungle Shrine sets should be fairly good indicators of whether this approach is feasible.

One drawback to pulling dungeon dressings out of the regular PPM sets, is that unless they are still branded as Pathfinder Battles or Icons of Realms (Pathfinder more so), we may not get adventure specific pieces such as the Crimson Throne, Apparatus of the Octopus, or the Demon Mouth Statue.

I personally ordered extra crypt walls that I'm planning to use for Tyrant's Grasp, as I'm finally trying out Dwarven Forge and those seem like a perfect fit for that

Dark Archive

I totally agree that someone buying a random booster of "Ruins of Lastwall", and instead of getting a large creature mini, receiving a
-Torture Rack,
-Funerary Bed or
-Crypt Wall
might be disappointed and rightly so.

I just looked and there isn't even an indication on the booster box that says you could get anything else than a creature.
It says: "4 collectible figures inside".

While i am a fan of "Dungeon dressing" in general, i would like it to be it's own seperate line to decide how many i need of each piece (i would like to have four crypt walls, but got none).

But i fear that now that Wizkids are doing their own line of "4D minis" (ranging from $29.99 to 89.99) they won't be willing to produce a seperate line for Paizo.

The solution: Make it either a part of the case incentive when producing a scenery one (alternating between gargantuan creature and scenery would be best) or offer two different case incentives:
a dressings pack and the main premium.

PS: If you are ordering your Pathfinder Battles miniatures through your local gaming store (like i do): tomorrow (june 11th) is the worldwide order cut-off date for "Legendary Adventures", the next Pathfinder Battles series and the first one for Pathfinder Second Edition (including a new design for the Hobgoblin and presumely other creatures and including huge-sized minis in the booster boxes).
Online stores (like paizo.com) will offer later dates for ordering.

I now wonder if "Legendary Adventures" will include HUGE DUNGEON DRESSINGS or any at all?

with creatures, sure you want the figure to match the art style of the bestiary, Pathfinder differs significantly from WotC sometimes.
but how different do you expect a „4D mini“ portcullis to be from the Paizo or a WotC licenced one to be?

they got their toes in the water and found or created a demand, time to dig in.

My hope is that some of the “settings” will be branded as Pathfinder Battles or Icons of the Realms so they can offer those unique adventure specific pieces.

The point would be for specific pieces related to specific campaign setitng bits. The Bloodstones of Arazni and the Crimson Throne come to mind as two examples.

Unfortunately that is a no, the "Wizkids 4D" line will be 100% setting neutral.

That won't keep Wizards of the Coast from making their own dressing stuff if they want to (like "the Falling Star sailing ship"), but i don't see the same working for Paizo.

So like it or not, dressing pieces remaining part of the regular sets is probably the best and only possibility to have any that are made especially for Pathfinder & Starfinder adventures.

I don’t know the Bloodstones but I have the Crimson Throne.

yeah it’s kind of nice to have the queen lounging on it, but we now have three thrones: the Crimison Throne, the mock up crimison of the same set and a Barbarian Throne of Kingmaker.
If I‘d have had to buy a throne seperately, one generic throne would have been quite enough for me to use in all three settings.

I would miss the apparatus of the octopus more! And I’m still hoping we eventually get an Apparatus of Kwalsh. I’m betting it would have to be made under the Icons of the Realm line.

Thanks for the feedback, Steve. The push to include more dungeon dressing and set pieces for the premium sets has largely come from WizKids, as they've had a ton of success selling those as unpainted figures in their Deep Cuts line, and building the sculpting costs into an existing set helps them produce more of them over the long run. At the end of the day, non-dragon/non-elemental "big" creatures sell worse, and thus WK has been hesitant to include them unless they are a generic enough fantasy monster for them to feel safe making that investment.

I'll once again pass the feedback on to them, but it couldn't hurt for you and others sharing this opinion to reach out to their social media and customer service teams, as the more vectors from which they get the message, the more likely they are to consider it when planning future sets.

Cheers, Mark. I’ll do that.

To be clear, I’m not really campaigning for change - I’m moving on to other things.. it’s more a courtesy really. Companies can’t know why you’ve stopped buying their products if you don’t tell them.
