Announcing Pathfinder Battles: Kingmaker!

Monday, April 16, 2018

Now that we're done with previews of Jungle of Despair—which releases next week—I'm excited to announce the next Pathfinder Battles miniatures set from our partners at WizKids.

Currently scheduled for an October release, Pathfinder Battles: Kingmaker, is the fifteenth set of prepainted plastic miniatures in the popular Pathfinder Battles line. Featuring 44 randomized figures in sizes ranging from Small to Large, and six pieces of dungeon dressing, Pathfinder Battles: Kingmaker exemplifies the commitment to quality sculpts and paint jobs, as well as variety and utility of figures, the line is known for.

As always, customers who order a case of Pathfinder Battles: Kingmaker boosters will also have the opportunity to purchase the set's case incentive. This set's two-figure incentive features the earth and water elemental lords, completing the Huge elemental series we began last year in Maze of Death with the air and fire elemental lords.

No Kingmaker set would be complete without some of the iconic allies and villains from the Kingmaker Adventure Path, such as the troll leader and Nyrissa, a Large uncommon and Medium rare figure, respectively.

There are also a number of more generic tropes of the genre we're releasing for the first time, like the bat swarm, werewolf, and oni mage. These figures fill in some of the gaps from the Pathfinder RPG Bestiary, which many fans have requested we represent as thoroughly as possible in prepainted plastic. The bat swarm and werewolf are both Medium figures, at the common and uncommon rarities, respectively, while the oni mage is a Large uncommon figure.

With the pending release of Pathfinder Kingmaker, the first isometric, party-based computer RPG set in the Pathfinder fantasy universe (now in Beta for Kickstarter backers!), we also had the unique opportunity to provide miniatures of the many new characters being introduced in the game by the game's developers at Owlcat Games. These companions will join the player along their journey to conquer and rule the Stolen Lands, and can now join players in their tabletop games as well. Check out Regongar, half-orc magus, the first of these companions we're showing off. A Medium rare figure, Regongar also makes a great PC or enemy NPC with the lightning spell effect giving him unmatched gravitas on the battle mat.

We're still a few months away from showing off the entire set, but keep coming back weekly for more Pathfinder (and Starfinder) miniature previews. Next week, we'll take a look at some of the figures in next wave of Deep Cuts unpainted plastic miniatures from WizKids. Until then, keep rolling 20s!

Has it been decided how this will affect the subscriber prices for case incentives? (I don't pay attention very well, to be honest... are they even still discounted?)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

They’re still discounted (to $10) presumably this set will cost $20 for both.

I’m glad to hear the line is going strong. I’ve really felt the two lines developing in parallel has both spurred innovation and meant there are options if your preferred line doesn’t offer a specific mini you like.

The fact they can’t keep a consistent release schedule is annoying, but the D&D sets don’t sell out that quickly, as a general rule.

Thank you. :-)

It is true. For a variety of reasons, WizKids had to split them into independent products at a slightly higher per-figure price. The alternative was to offer only one figure as part of the Kingmaker set and push the other to a future set, but we didn't want to split the four Huge elementals over more than two sets, so this is the option we went with.

Thank you for commenting on this, Mark.

Even if the price increase from $50 to $70 is a steep one, i agree with the decision of keeping both minis in the same set.
They ARE massive. Especially the Water Elemental - it is almost gargantuan.

The next case incentive will probably be $49.99 again. ;-)

I bet it won't be a huge mini after three in a row (Hydra, Earth & Water Elemental), even if i like the fact that the missing huge creatures are finally being made.

Wizkids sadly doesn't seem to be willing to publish a Pathfinder Battles set including huge minis in boosters, so it may take years to get a (half-)complete collection of the most commonly encountered huge minis (like Aboleths, Bulettes, Froghemoths...)

I for one look forward to the new blog on the Pathfinder Battles: Kingmaker in the next couple of weeks, keep up the GREAT WORK! Mark

Thank you for letting us know, Mark.

I'm ok with this, as long as it isn't a preview of what's to come. Just don't want to see incentives bumped to $60-70 normal price and subscriber benefits bumped to $20.

A little more than 18 weeks until the intended october release date - i bet the previews will start again in early july.

Dark Archive

It's getting really crowded for prepainted minis in the next months:

september 18th: D&D Icons of the Realms set 9: "Waterdeep: Dragon Heist" miniatures & hardcover adventure.

october 24th/31st: Pathfinder Battles set 15: "Kingmaker".

november 13th: D&D Icons of the Realms set 10 (no official name yet, but very likely "Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage", as the hardcover of the same name releases on the same day).

Please continue the previews as soon as possible, Mark, because i think the more cool minis are revealed, the higher the pre-order numbers get. :-)

Dark Archive

16 weeks until Kingmakers intended release date.

4-8 weeks until the four ppm Starfinder packs are supposed to release.

Dark Archive

11 weeks until D&D Icons set 9 releases.

It will be interesting to see if we have any Starfinder ppm before august 13th.

any news on new previews?

Dark Archive

My flagstore told me that the Starfinder ppms might arrive in late august, maybe we could get a preview of the actual minis?

The next full set to arrive is D&D Waterdeep: Dragon Heist in exactly 10 weeks...

Dark Archive

15 weeks until the intended release date of october 24th for "Pathfinder Battles: Kingmaker"!
This will already be set #15 in less than seven years! :-)

Is two months a normal gap for Icons releases?

No, it's not.

Normally there are 5-7 months between two D&D Icons of the Realms (or Pathfinder Battles) sets nowadays.

The november set MAY yet be moved to december or january, as the september set "Waterdeep: Dragon Heist" was originally scheduled to release in july, but got moved to the same release date as the hardcover adventure.

But i think it will probably keep the november release date, to release together with novembers "Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage" hardcover.

Mark, any idea when the blog picks up again?

After Gen Con would be my guess.

There are 45 renders to preview and 15 weeks until the street date, which would mean 3 minis every week would work out exactly *hinthint* ;-)

"Kingmaker previews are going to pick up again in earnest very soon. We have gaps between sets, and we're in one of those right now.

We have at least two more sets beyond Kingmaker scheduled, with plans to discuss more at Gen Con in about 12 days. Those upcoming sets have ties to some second edition stuff, so you can expect to see some figures based on early 2e art with releases shortly following Kingmaker."

Good news for Pathfinder Battles minis lovers! :-)

Dark Archive

Since there are no miniature news whatsoever atm, i'll just say that "D&D Icons of the Realms: Waterdeep: Dragon Heist" releases in exactly 8 weeks.
29 days later, on october 17th, "Pathfinder Battles: Kingmaker" is scheduled for release.

As a collector of both D&D and Pathfinder miniatures. My wallet really feels the burn when the sets are so close together. But as long as they keep making them, I'm likely to keep buying them.

Looking forward to some new miniatures posts soon hopefully.

Dark Archive

Yesterday brought some pictures of actual "Waterdeep: Dragon Heist" minis.
They don't look so good imo.
I will probably not buy a case but cherry-pick.

I hope (and think so too) that next week will bring a big KINGMAKER (out in exactly 12 weeks!) preview from Gencon, as i have to decide if i'll order a case or 2 bricks - i'll definetly take the two elementals. ;-)

So how do the two elementals being packaged separately work? If we get a case through our subscription, do we get the opportunity to purchase both elementals at the reduced rate for incentives? Or will we instead only get to pick one?

I don't think they (Waterdeep) look that bad. I feel like most pics I've seen taken so close, with such a bad angle, and with bad lighting make minis look really bad. Numerous times I've seen photos of WizKids' minis from both the D&D & Pathfinder lines, respectively, and they are a real turn-off. Then I get the mini in my hand and it looks so much better.

That doesn't mean I have high hopes for every piece from that line. That Xanathar looks very similar to the one from Monster Menagerie 2, arguably the worst Beholder I've seen in pre-painted plastic form. The face looks a bit better, but it continues to sport eyes that look like my four-year-old niece painted them.

I'm beyond excited about the Kingmaker minis. I love the choices so far, and from what I've seen they look great. I can't wait for another preview soon, plus whatever photos pop up from GenCon. I'm also eager for confirmation that we'll get a Large-sized Spriggan, too.

Speaking of GenCon, do we know yet if there will be GenCon-specific alternates? If so, do we know what they are?

You'll be able to purchase one or both.

A little off topic, but not only does october bring Pathfinder Battles Kingmaker, it also brings
"Pathfinder Battles Deep Cuts: Gargantuan Green, Red & White Dragon"!!!

For only $29.99 each, everybody can get the unpainted (but primed) version of the case incentives from the "Reign of Winter", "Legends of Golarion" & "Dungeons Deep" sets!

11 weeks until the street date of Pathfinder Battles: Kingmaker!

Any miniature news from Gen Con?

Dark Archive

I'm curious if the monday miniatures blog will pick up again tomorrow, but directly after Gen Con is probably unlikely, so next week may be a safer bet.

10 weeks until the intended release date of october 17th!
That means 9 more preview blogs with 5 minis reveals each would suffice to show everything before.

@Mark Moreland:
Could you please show the 7 unrevealed large uncommon minis in the first four previews?

They decide for me if to order two bricks (16 boosters) or a case.
The Troll Leader is a cool miniature, but i already have dozens of trolls.

We already know a small Spriggan is in the set (it's on the booster) and a lot of people think and hope that a large one is too.
So maybe you could show that one (and one other large) next monday? ;-)

Thank you.

I plan to start previews in the next week or two, but whether or not they'll all be larges, I can't say. I need to map out what I'm revealing each week, and that's often more thematic than based on rarity, so no promises.

Thank you for the reply, Mark. :-)

You don't need to show all the larges in a row, maybe the ones that havn't been done to death? ;-)

In my personal experience (which is pretty exhaustive in case of prepainted fantasy miniatures imho), most people decide if to buy a case or not mostly for three things:

-what kind of large creatures do i get?
-how useful are the common minis in large numbers?
-can i build some kind of army with the minis?

#4 is probably: how bad do i want the case incentive?
But a lot of online sellers offer the incentives if you buy one or two bricks or even seperately.

Another thing is, a lot of people order through Diamond's Previews and it's getting close for ordering through it.

But i don't want to pressure you, you're doing a great job so far and i am looking forward to your next story around the great Pathfinder Battles creature miniatures! :-)

before I subscribed I made a simple calculation:
- which minis do I want in which numbers?
- how much would this cost me in singles?
- how close to the price of a case is this?

turned out not worth a case at regular price most times, but so close to (or over) the price for the subscription that the subscription is worth it.

While somewhat confusing to price out, the subscription prices are competitive with other online retailers (at least the reputable ones). I’ve been doing them for quite some time now and haven’t been sorry. Plus the discount carries over to singles bought here as well.

Dark Archive

9 weeks until the intended release date of october 17th!

Seeing that Wizkids have moved up the release date of their "Waterdeep: Dragon Heist" minis by two weeks (september 5th) recently, it is of course possible that this date will be moved up or down in 3 weeks (that's when the release schedule for october is updated).

Dark Archive

It's highly unlikely that today will bring a minis blog, which means it will most likely be coming on monday!

I have the subscription now for the current Pathfinder Battles case and that one I was able to include the Hydra. Is there anything I need to do for the Kingmaker case or will my subscription order it for me automatically as part of the subscription? Do I add the case incentives separately or do they automatically get added for me?

This is my first time on the subscription. I tried to review the FAQ to find these answers but did not see them, sorry if they were answered there. Trying to avoid accidently ordering multiples by mistake.

We will automatically generate orders for new releases including the incentives in the subscription line until you choose to cancel.

1) if there are more than 10 humans/elves in the set, my order is cut in half
2) if there are less than 25% new minis, my remaining order is cut in half.
3)How many of the commons do people want?
4) what paint jobs do I know will be scewed up?

1) I agree. Personally i have hundreds of different human minis, dozens of Elves/half-elves. Also many dwarves & all halflings.

Gnomes & especially orcs/half-orcs are still underpresented.

2) I mostly agree. I mainly want creatures which have never been made before OR which have been so rare that i have only one or that have been made a decade ago.

3) With me it's more like: "How many can i use of the exact same mini?". I often cut off stuff from common minis i have in large numbers to create visible variants.
I also put small, round, colored stickers on the bases of the same minis to be able to differentiate them in battle. It also highly depends on the "organization" entry in the Bestiary.
For instance, i have four Gelatinous cubes, but the organization is "solitary", so i don't need any more.
But i would love half a dozen large "Giant Skeleton" minis or basic female orcs.
When there is only one version of a mini, like the "Mind Frond"/Basidirond, (highest organization 3-8) i want at least 4-5 to give every pc one enemy in battle.
4) That is usually not a factor for me, as Pathfinder Battles has mostly only one or two minis per set that are badly painted (Azata Wilder & Human Hunter in the last set).

Sczarni

I have recently started organizing my mini for a big sell off... keeping one of each, selling about 13,000 minis over the next few months. So my #3 was not as a seller. I have enough wolves I can put out a 15 wolf pack with all different sculpts.(3 d&d 2 pathfinfinder, 3 bones 3 mtg and 4 or 5 metal.) I have enough pirates to make a warships full crew contingent unique.

You'll be able to purchase one or both.

Just a quick note to follow up on this: allowing the option to choose one or the other was not something that our miniature subscription code was able to accomodate. The two incentives are listed under one product code WZK73136-CI and we do not have an option to only purchase one of them with a case at this time.
