Pathfinder Battles Preview: Last of the Righteous

Friday, January 10, 2014

We've only got two more minis to reveal for this month's Wrath of the Righteous set of Pathfinder Battles prepainted miniatures. Before I show off photos, however, I need to make an important update to the set's actual release date. Due to inclement weather across virtually the entire country last week, we've had to delay the official release of the Wrath of the Righteous set to January 22. So update your calendars (and your expectations) for this new release date, please.

That out of the way, I'd also like to share with you that last night I brought home and opened a case of Wrath of the Righteous figures. This case came directly from the warehouse, and directly from the factory before that. So unlike the images I post here, which are generally paint masters, I got a chance to see the actual production run figures and was able to gauge the impact of some of the paint master changes we implemented with this set.

As I've mentioned in a previous Friday blog, the production run of the previous set, Legends of Golarion, fell short of our expectations in regards to factory paint application. There are still tons of great figures in that set, and it's certainly possible to get excellent examples of each mini in the set depending on when in the production run the mini in question was painted (and presumably by whom), there was more inconsistency in that set than in any of the previous ones, so for Wrath of the Righteous we attempted to make the factory's job a little bit easier by toning down some of the color gradients, ink washes, and minor details like zippers and belt buckles.

Speaking broadly, after opening a case I'm pretty confident that this experiment was a success. While there is of course the quality variance you might expect with any mass-produced products, I can say with authority that Wrath of the Righteous contains several of the best-looking figures we've done to date. Creatures like the Dominion Invader, Gibrileth Demon, Will-o'-Wisp, and especially the fire demon Khorramzadah look just shy of perfect. I'm pretty excited by what I saw last night, and while there remains room for improvement, I feel like we are zeroing in on as close to ideal as one might reasonably expect. Lots and lots of sweet figures in this one, folks.

With that being said, let's take a look at the one remaining normal-sized figure in the set I accidentally left off last week's preview, the Frost Drake!

Meet the Frost Drake, a CR 7 menace from Pathfinder RPG Bestiary 2. This creature is also heavily featured in the Reign of Winter Adventure Path, giving you plenty of opportunities to incorporate it into play. Degenerate cousins of white dragons, Frost Drakes are ferocious predators that haunt arctic wastelands and mountain heights. They breathe freezing mist and generally like to eat adventurers (or anyone else). The Frost Drake is a Large, uncommon figure.

And with that out of the way, let's take a close look at the Wrath of the Righteous set's limited edition promotional miniature, Deskari, Lord of the Locust Host, a Gargantuan demon lord sure to send your heroes into itchy fits.

Known as the Lord of the Locust Host and the Usher of the Apocalypse, Deskari has long plagued the northlands of Golarion, where the walls between the Abyss and the Material Plane have always been weak. Long ago, one such foray into Golarion brought Deskari to the attention of the living god Aroden, patron of humanity, who defeated him and sealed him away. When Aroden died at the onset of the Age of Lost Omens about a century ago, Deskari emerged with a vengeance, bringing the Abyss with him and tainting Golarion with the treacherous landscape of the Worldwound, the setting of the Wrath of the Righteous Adventure Path.

And now, he can bring that same sort of hospitality to your game table. Here are some relevant statistics. CR 29. 742 hit points. Regeneration 30 (epic and good or deific). SR 40. You're welcome, Game Masters!

Deskari is a Gargantuan figure. He stands much taller than the four-legged Gargantuan Green Dragon from Legends of Golarion, and is even a smidge taller than the Rune Giant from Rise of the Runelords, making Deskari the largest Pathfinder Battles figure we've produced to date.

To purchase Deskari at this time, you must purchase a Wrath of the Righteous Standard Booster Case, either individually or as part of a Pathfinder Battles Case Subscription. Pathfinder Battles subscribers receive 75% off our price ($39.99) for this enormous premium miniature.

And that's it for this week, and for the Wrath of the Righteous set. Remember to look for the set to release on January 22. Seek it out at your local retailer or preorder here on paizo.com!

Next week, I'll have something new and exciting to share with you. See you then!

WOW! Both figures are just amazing! Deskari may be the most detailed Gargantuan figure I've ever seen. Just incredible! :)

The frost drake is really unexpected I think it appears once in the AP? I assume that is a temporary post the drake is on? The final will be transparent? I like the style and colour on this one and can easily find a place for it in my collection. Looks like I will have to wait for my Ash Giant :(

As for Deskari. The longer I look at him the more I like him. The wings look pretty cool - are they transparent plastic? My biggest question though is how is he attached to his base? The legs don't look to be attached, is he floating on a transparent post?

Hats off to you paizo and wizkids. This is the best set so far for me and I'm glad to hear the paint quality issue appears to have been resolved. Now, by new and exciting are you referring to the Reign of Winter set or do you have a new revelation that will simultaneously improve my miniatures life and depleting my bank account?

I'm happy to hear that what you pulled off the production line looks good.

Deskari looks awesome, can't wait to get a closer look. His wings look interesting, almost granular.

To be honest there are still some issues we need to address (female human faces, for example), but overall I was very impressed with my pulls. Until I get faces that look as good as Beginner Box Heroes again I'm not going to call the paint issues "resolved," but then again I think I will always push for improvement no matter what.

The post on the Frost Drake will indeed be clear.

Oh hey, I could use those frost drakes to run a scenario I just played..

Swoon.

I'm so glad I got my "we're going to take your money" e-mail last night.

For some reason I was already under the assumption the set was to release the 22nd, so luckily no disappointment on that end for me.

The Frost Drake is a very pleasant surprise, as I had assumed we'd see it in the Reign of Winter set. When I did a quick guess list of the Reign of Winter list, I included the Frost Drake in part due to it's appearance throughout several of the Adventure Path issues. I'm happy to see us get it now, as it sort of opens up a spot in the next set, so to speak. I like the sculpt and colors of this Drake, and I imagine he'll turn out great.

It's great to finally see Deskari, and even better to hear that he's a smidge taller than the Rune Giant. I really like the sculpt here, and the wings stick out to me as looking pretty sweet. The other thing I really like about this sculpt is the utilized space of the figure in relation to the base. Because he appears somewhat more slender a creature than the Rune Giant, I was a bit worried that Deskari would look a bit weak as a gargantuan-sized miniature. It looks as if this foul creature has legs coming down somewhat evenly around the base, thus making it appear more full overall and just as menacing as the Rune Giant and other gargantuan miniatures from Paizo.

Overall this is hands down my favorite set as far as sculpts go, so I'm looking forward to the finished product. In addition, I really like the ratio of monsters to good guys and humanoids in general. I've seen some disappointment with the lack of humanoid figures in this set, but personally I'd much rather have different monsters and other creatures to choose from. While I tend to run my campaigns a bit humanoid-heavy at times, and stuff it full of actual role-play opportunities, there really are a limited number of times when I need multiple humans in miniature form (outside of the party itself). And I must say, I really appreciate how this set helps knock out a majority of the demons found in the first three or four bestiaries.

I think it's great that you are open and honest about how the last set didn't meet your expectations. It's great to see a company honest about such things because it becomes easier to get behind the concept that, as a company, you're always looking to improve and perfect your product the best you can. Often times you come on here and respond to a post or two in such a timely matter that it is obvious you're a company that truly cares how buyers view their product. That's a sign that you want and expect to be associated with quality, and that is definitely the type of company I feel comfortable giving my money.

I can't speak to the quality of the Wrath of the Righteous line for another couple weeks. However, I can and will speak to idea that quality painted pieces of each miniature in the Legends of Golarian line are available. The first case I bought, the quality was all over the place, but it must have been among the worst (and earliest) waves. But through kindness of several players in my campaign, I obtained another case AND another separate brick later on. Every miniature in the second case and in the additional brick I received from Legends of Golarian was in great shape. In addition, I ordered a few extras from a separate site, and all of them were of good quality, too. So for anyone out there who is hesitating as far as the Legends of Golarian pieces are concerned, I can back up the claim that there are wonderful pieces out there.

The good thing about waiting a week for these is that the time between this release and the Reign of WInter Huge two-pack will decrease.

I'm also looking forward to next week's announcement and what new things you have for us. Perhaps it's the first look at the Reign of Winter miniature line, or perhaps it's an announcement about what the next Builder series will consist of. (Assuming that you continue with the Builder series, of course).

A. Serious question for you Erik. How is Deskari packaged? How many pieces does he come in?

I must admit that Deskari is one of the nicest sculpt I've since in a long while!
Awesome job!!!

+1. I'm more of a fan of gargantuans coming in multiple pieces, to protect from breakage, but if I recall correctly that wasn't popular?

Hmmm, never even considered gargantuan coming in multiple pieces. I'd much rather prefer them coming in 1 piece. I've never had a problem with my gargantuan packaging and them coming intact? Why would I want it in multiple pieces if that's the case? I guess in the end it depends on what most have seen happen with their gargantuan minis, but I've never heard any problems from the folks I know?

They are usually in 2+ pieces, the green from legends was the exception so far. The giant was 2, blue dragon 4, skeletal dragon 3. Im happy to get them in pieces for similar reasons to in_digoo above. I'm also not 100% sure how Deskari is attached yo his base! the legs don't look to be attached to the base.

Great miniatures! Love the Frost drake especially since we are doing both AP's, also Reign of Winter!!!!!!

I hope that people can't just one-shot Deskari. That would be cheap.

Deskari is amazing. Are those wings made out of miniature flies? Am I seeing that right? Wow. Keep em' coming guys!

Well, maybe James went with my suggestion of impenetrable deflector shields and giant ion cannon. Otherwise, don't get your hopes up.

That's just nuts.

Is Deskari in Bestiary 4? Or an upcoming book?
