Preview: Player Character Folio

Tuesday, June 12, 2012

Now that the Advanced Race Guide is just about ready to ship out to subscribers and stores everywhere, it's time to take a look at another product that is due to release very soon, one that will give you a great new way to record your new dhamphir bard!

The Player Character Folio is 16 pages of character sheet glory, containing spots for you to record not just your vital statistics and gear, but things like your family history, adventure record, and how many dragons you've slain. Normally, we would just put up some artwork from the product, but the Player Character Folio has a few tricks inside, so we thought it best to show off a few photos of the actual folio.

As you can see, when you open the folio, it's got a two-panel cover that opens to reveal a folder pocket with some handy reference tables and your main page, which contains all of your vital statistics. We designed it this way so that these numbers would always be available to you during play, no matter what page you happen to be on.

Here you can see the first spread of the folio, which is naturally dedicated to combat. Of course, all of your vital statistics are still at your disposal.

Here is a closer look at that vital statistics panel, open to the page for spellcasters to record their important information.

Record all of your vital background info on this spread, including a map of your hideout and a character sketch!

Finally, we give you all the room you need to record the gear carried and worn by your character. Of course, there are a number of other spreads in this book, including my personal favorite, in which you can record the various achievements you have accomplished during play, but if you want to see that list, you'll have to wait for the Player Character Folio to hit store shelves in July.

Just to be sure, will this be shipped as a book, or a game accessory? If the latter, I might skip this one for the same reason I skipped the Beginner's Box; I don't want to pay more in import duty and handling fees than I pay for the product itself.
It's defined as a book for customs purposes (and counts as Bound Printed Matter for shipping purposes). If you're in a country where it takes a minimum weight to trigger the attention of Customs, this one only weighs about 4 ounces.

Excellent, all books are customs free here in the UK. I guessed it would be similar to the Map Folios, but I thought I'd make sure.

The main distinction between "books" (like this) and "accessories" (like the Map Folios or the GM Screen) is that books are bound (in this case with staples) while the others are not.

I, and I think many others, would pay $10 for a PDF version of it if it were form fillable. Even if it doesn't have the auto-fill in that Neceseros (sp?) sheet has, just the ability to type it in on a computer and print it out would be super. As it is, I'll not suspend my subscription to skip it, but I will not likely use it at all.

How about I give you $10 for it and we have the Paizonians ship it to me instead? You *make* $1.50 that way :)

Edit: AND still get the benefits of the PDF!

But.. but... but... then my shelf will have an empty spot on it and my collection will not be complete!

Heheheh ... yep, I know exactly what you mean. After all, of the 57 Adventure Path volumes I own, I've run ... um ... one.

They would fit nicely alongside my "Dungeon" magazines (issues one to ninety-something), from which I've actually used at most a few pages. Then there's the almost three hundred issues of "Dragon", a handful of (still shrink-wrapped) Al Qadim boxed sets, and a selection of other TSR 1e/2e "Forgotten Realms" material. And I'll probably never get to use it. I do plan to run "Skulls & Shackles" later on this year. But then there's the "Rise of the Runelords" reissue, to be followed by "Shattered Star". I'd also like to run "Legacy of Fire" sometime (which might give me an opportunity to throw in some Al Qadim sidequests). By then, though, Paizo will probably have added another couple of Adventure Paths that pique my interest. And I'm not getting any younger ...

Funny thing is, I do get some use out of a lot of the material; as I've run a homebrew campaign since 2006, and have always pulled stuff in from The Dragon, or the APs, or modules, or the like.

It's just that up until last year, I virtually never ran stock adventures. That changed last year when I decided to run a second campaign - the first one was the two Darkmoon Vale adventures (Hollow's Last Home and Crown of the Kobold King), and currently I just finished up Haunting of Harrowstone and am about to send them off on Feast of Ravenmoor before jumping into Trial of the Beast.

I do read pretty much everything, though :)

I can honestly say that I probably will never use the physical copy of the character folio that I will be getting as part of my subscription, but I will probably take the time and make the pdf fallible as I play mostly from my iPad.

Are you going to make it fallible? Or fillable? :)

If the later could you post it up assuming Paizo doesn't object so the rest of us could fill one out as well. Though if you make it fallible, well I can make mistakes on my own so i don't need help there. :)

I haven't decided which on yet. I figure I’ll just keep the internet in suspense.

Has there been any official word from Paizo on whether or not the PDF will be fillable? Savable? That would increase the utility a thousandfold.

I should note that all the pages are uncoated, which means that you can use a pencil, erase, and rewrite as your character gains levels.
Having seen what some of my players do to their character sheets with a simple pencil and repeated erasing (I've seen holes rubbed in the paper from erasing), this is probably not the product for them. Just erase and rewrite doesn't necessarily mean that the paper will hold up long term.
What I've done in the past is used the Scotch tape that has a matte finish and put it over areas that are frequently erased. With a decent pencil (and eraser), the tape is pretty durable and can be erased and re-used without damaging the paper underneath.

If I buy one of these, I'm buying a bunch of 8.5" x 11" clear acrylic labels to place over the pages. That way I can write with wet erase (or dry erase for hit points).

I'm completely with Laithoron as far as this product's inclusion in the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Subscription. I tend toward the obsessive-compulsive in terms of my purchases, so there's a good chance I'd have picked one up in any case, even if I never got around to using it, but I really feel that character folders aren't the default format for the majority of players, so making them an "opt out" subscription item rather than just an accessory available for purchase seems odd at best.

I did opt out of the Beginner's Box last year, but that was something I was certain I'd never use and ran a good deal more than $10. This one I'll take.

In addition to the Beginner Box, the GM Screen was another example of this type of product being included in the RPG line. The precedent was set long ago, and Paizo has been very clear and upfront in its description of what this subscription can include. On top of that, the fact that opting out is so painless and easy really makes this a no-brainer to me. So, personally, I have no issues with this being in the RPG line, and I am greatly looking forward to receiving it next month!

It won't be fillable or savable. As I understand things, it's not currently possible to provide that feature whilst still maintaining the watermarks and other protections Paizo use on their PDFs, but that should that change (ie if Adobe give them a finer degree of control) they may revisit the issue.

Is there a pdf version

I believe that is a character sheet for each class

I can not imagine paying $ 10 for a character sheet with all the skills and abilities for each class mixed in the same sheet.

Or the other is to take out a one folio for each Class ... or as they like to sell everything, Sell a generator of character sheets.

at my table, we play with house rules, and we do not serve much the official character sheets

For example, I would love that within each Players Guide Adventure Paths came a character sheet with the rules used in this Adventure Path.
For example carrion crown and trust points, sanity, etc ...

Another example in the book of Ultimate Combat are a lot of options:
Vigor and Vitality
Partial Armor
damage reduction given by armor
options duels (with respective switches)

The Ultimate Combat come spellblights

In the Advanced Players Guide can be found:
racial traits
Hero Points

among other things ... maybe I forgot one.
I think it would be nice (and you owe us) a character sheet that includes all the above options...that should have been included in each of those books.
I guess a typo with these inclusions would not be bad

Does the Pdf look exactly like the book? or are there changes?

I bought the Folio and really enjoy it. I tried making some copies of it for my other characters and it did not Xerox well. So I ended up getting the PDF too. They are the exact same product.

Out of curiosity, the 'main page/inside cover' where the Hit Points go... is there something special I should have been doing with that? Pencil does NOT show up well on that AT ALL... After a year and half, some of the coating is worn off and it's ok now... but I really felt like I was doing something wrong there for a long time...
