Call to Volunteer: PAX Unplugged 2025

Friday, August 22, 2025

Greetings, players! We’re pleased to announce that we’ll be attending PAX Unplugged in Philadelphia, PA this November 21-23! We’ll be running scenarios, quests, and demos for Pathfinder and the Starfinder Society, as well as demos of our board games!

We’re now soliciting volunteers for the show! We are currently seeking volunteers for the following roles:

  • Game Master: Run tables of Pathfinder and Starfinder Society quests and scenarios.
  • Board Game Demo GM: Run demo tables for Pathfinder Quest and Pathfinder Monster Match. Applicants should have strong board game knowledge (both our games and general board games) and preferably have related demo experience.
  • Headquarters (HQ): Answer player and GM questions, seat players, handle conflicts and disputes, and report games after completion

Please read this important information before applying:

  • Volunteer applications will be reviewed and accepted or rejected by the PAX Unplugged Organizing Committee. Filling this form out does not guarantee acceptance; you will receive an email with further information from the PAXU committee.
  • PAX Unplugged schedules will be assigned by the committee. You will be asked for your preference of system and level, but you will not necessarily be able to choose the specific scenario(s) you run. The committee’s intention is to assign people to run the same scenario multiple times during the weekend. There is a free-form field at the end of the form to enter specific requests, though there’s no guarantee they will be honored.
  • Reward information is listed in the table below. GMs who do not qualify for a badge will still need to purchase one.
  • Applications will be processed on a rolling basis, beginning no later than September 16. The earlier you get your application in, the more likely it is you’ll get the scenarios you want. Please be patient as we put the final details on the convention internally before we send out GM emails!
  • Please note that we will not be providing hotel rooms for GMs. All GMs will need to provide their own accommodation. Parking reimbursement is available for 8+ slot GMs if requested.
    • A sub-note on this: the weekend of PAX is also the weekend of the Philadelphia marathon. We recommend GMs make housing/parking arrangements ASAP!
  • Any questions about the GM signup process should be sent to the committee at paxunplugged@gmail.com

I can't volunteer, but I hope that anyone that can, see this! HUZZAH!

Ooof... I would love to. But...

I was looking over the logistics and... With the Marathon, this is going to be a nightmare. The marathon route goes past the convention center north and south within a few blocks. Both Chestnut and Arch streets are involved for several blocks in both directions. There is a subway system, so check your logistics and route planning carefully. If anyone is planning on going, get to booking now!

Good luck, and best wishes to all who go.

Anyone here volunteered before? How’s the experience?

I've had a great experience volunteering the last few years. The venture-officers have been organized, the other GMs have been generous in sharing their handouts/fancy tokens (shoutout to David Malkiewicz!), and the players have almost all been engaged and a joy to run for. Maybe a little noisy in the room, but not in a way that really sticks out in my memory, especially considering the overall con is IMO pretty overwhelming in terms of its sheer size.

The convention center is right near Reading Terminal Market, so lots of good food opportunities too if you're willing to deal with the crowd.

I've offered to run games again Friday and Saturday (but will sadly be avoiding coming in at all Sunday because of the marathon). I'm hoping PAX returns to the usual early December schedule again next year.

Thanks, Jacob! I'm a long-time player/GM and always appreciated the extra effort so I'm very happy to pass those along.

Volunteering has been great at PAX, and we usually land a premium location that gives us easy access to bathrooms and exits. I am also looking forward to returning to an early December schedule. - Dave M.
