Gen Con 2024: That’s a Wrap!

Thursday, August 8, 2024

We're back from Gen Con, and at this point we’re just about caught up on sleep! [editor’s note: okay, at least one of us is still in Indiana under quarantine, but we didn’t know that when we wrote this blog]

During the Best Four Days in Gaming, we ran:

  • 415 Pathfinder Society tables
  • 129 Starfinder Society tables
  • 198 tables of the Starfinder Playtest
  • 115 demo tables of Pathfinder and Starfinder Second Edition
A Starfinder Second Edition Demo guided by organized play volunteers

During our Starfinder Society special on Friday night, 38 tables fled an awakening Swarm horde! On Saturday night, 71 tables of Pathfinders braved the Eye of Abendego to stop a fiendish plot.

We also recognized outstanding volunteers! David Malkewicz and Darrel Currey received campaign coins for their service to Paizo Organized Play. Additionally, Lucas Servideo was awarded this year’s Order of the Wayfinder for outstanding service to the Pathfinder Academy program.

The Sagamore ballroom also hosted demos of our Foundry offerings, a character creation station from our friends at Pathfinder Nexus, and even a satellite booth for extra shopping!

We had such a wonderful time at Gen Con this year, and we hope you did too. If you want to join the best group of volunteer GMs in the business, applications will go live in January.

Only 364 days until Gen Con 2025!

I am impressed!!! How does this compare with last year?

My Foundry demo on Sunday evening was cancelled and I didn’t get a chance to learn. I purchased Foundry and some of the Paizo Asset packs. I’m wondering if any “Learn to use Paizo on Foundry” webinars could be scheduled.

Thanks!

It was so much fun to be part of all of this!

Congratulations for new Campaign Coins (so well-deserved!) for Darrel Curry and David Malciewicz! David I was so happy to be there for your final 5-glyph table! And Lucas, congratulations on the Order of the Wayfinder, my friend!

Hmm

I did enjoy my time in the Sagamore, although I might change how I handled my judge/play balance next year. Not sure which way it will go (this depends on how situation changes between now and then).

That being said, I see ways that I need to improve to make my Gen Con experience better.

The GM Indentured Servitude Plan is a lot of work, though it makes going to GenCon so much more affordable. There are some years when I just don't go because I'm not up for the 7-slot commitment, and I enjoy myself at Origins Game Fair instead, which is so much more mellow an experience.

But when I go on the GenCon GM Indentured Servitude Plan, I know what I'm going in for. My tips: Try to eat healthy (even if the lunch meal is just a peanut butter sandwich and some bagged veggies eaten in the room) for all three meals, get sleep and pace yourself. Give yourself permission to make mistakes, learn from them, and then get back to the game with a fresh start. Eventually you'll get your second wind, and then you're flying on the energy of the room, and everything is great again.

Do what you need to get peace between sessions. Take a walk. Say hello to friends, or go off and be antisocial if you need to chill.

When you are back on duty, delight in your tables and give them energy and they'll energize you back. I think that GenCon is worth it, but I know it's not for everyone.

Great fun. Time to rest and prepare for 2025. July 31st will come quickly!

Hey Guys,

I've been away from the Pathfinder Society and the RPGA for a long time now, but I'm looking to get involved again. I miss its heyday in 3rd edition/Pathfinder 1E where there were hundreds of conventions nationwide holding events. I know the RPGA is long dead, and it seems that Pathfinder Society 2e is still going strong. Can anyone recommend some of the local or national conventions were there's still a strong Pathfinder Society Presence? I see GenCon had a good turnout in # of tables, What about Origins or Winter fantasy? Megacon still rocking on Orlando? PaizoCon back to a physical format or is that still running events online? I live in Maine these days, and would love to take my kids to a gaming convention

And if any of my old groups or Ss'ressen players are still out there running, I'd love to hear from you.

Thanks

Hey Duane, where are you located? There are tons of in person conventions going on now.

  • Origins absolutely has a strong PFS / SFS presence, and the Ohio team is very well organized.
  • PaizoCon is a hybrid. Much of it is online, but it also had satellite PaizoCons at a bunch of game stores last year.
  • In Minnesota in September, SkalCon is coming up, and we would love to have you.

Also, there may be local play located near you. Give us a city and we'll try to help you find it!

    Hmm

Plug for Gamehole Con in Madison which has really grown in size for all kinds of gaming and guests. Oct 17th-20th this year. We have over 100 Org play tables scheduled for 1e, 2e, Starfinder and Playtest. Big enough to easily need a convention center, but were parking is still pretty simple. Also congrats to all the honorees this year especially Darrel for making every Starfinder table he is a part of an absolute blast.

I know that there is an Organized Play events forum and there may be other forums to use to advertise the con. Good luck!!!

It is always a wonderful experience to make the drive to Indianapolis and reunite with my friends from all across the US. Many of those friends were made at earlier Gen Cons. I also look forward to meeting nu-friends just as much. Plus, I get to learn from my peers at the tables. It was great to GM tables next to GM HMM, who took the time to help me learn how to play online via the PbP system several years ago as well as some of my other friends and comrades in purple.

I'll echo GM HMM here as well about the GM Servitude program. I would not have been able to attend Gen Con at all without it. While I do not get to play very often as a result, I feel that the program is worth doing. It's an incredible experience, the rewards are rather generous, and the gratitude of the players is genuine. I get an incredible rush just stepping into the Sag on the first day in my purple volunteer shirt knowing that I am helping to make somebody's Gen Con a positive experience.

I'm already looking forward to next year's Gen Con!

It was so awesome having you as my GM neighbor, Xathos! One thing about having a great GM neighbor is that I had the chance to hear some of your GM intros and outros and learn from them. The Starfinder Playtest team of GMs were all exceptional - I learned so much from my fellow Starfinder Playtest GMs this year!

I wish I could do more society play. I was just starting to dive into GMing society "full-time" when the local PFS fell apart in the Phoenix area because our Venture-Captain quit suddenly last autumn. I haven't been able to find a PFS game since and I don't know anything about setting one up. I was in the process of learning how from the VC when he quit.

Cons are a great way to get started, but there's also online play.

Warhorn is shutting down, but for the moment it's still the place to go to find PFS games on Virtual Table Tops. And the play-by-post forum here always has PFS games. If you're at all interested in that style of playing, check out the PbP Gameday event being advertised right now--open seating starts in a few days, and while it's a kind of a con there's no ticket price.

We can help you set up PFS. Do you have a favorite gaming store venue that you would like to run games at? We could connect you with your RVC, and offer advice. Would you be interested in helping make PFS happen?

EDIT: I just cast 'Summon RVC' to see if we can get you some help.

*HMM's cast was successful. The wild RVC appears.*

It's not a difficult process really.

Step 1: Find a location and talk to them about setting up a date and time to play.

Step 2: Announce to people that the game is going to take place with the who, what, where, and when.

Step 3: Select an adventure to run and prep to run it

We have some games happening in Tacoma but we definitely want to get thins up again in Phoenix. I'd love to chat more about it. Hit me up at my email: OPFSouthwestRVCJon@gmail.com

Thank you both. Sorry for the late response here. I have been distracted with dead AC in my house after posting. I have to get a new one now. Anyway, I will reach out to get in touch with you once I complete step 1. Thanks again!
