Hello Starfinders!
Earlier this month, we announced Starfinder Society Year 5: Year of Redemption’s Rise. While the previous blog post is packed full of information on the year itself, today we’re focusing on one of the two new factions you can expect to see in the Year of Redemption’s Rise: the Advocates!

The Advocates

When Zigvigix, former leader of the Exo-Guardians, emerged from their recent convalescence to find the Starfinder Society splitting apart at the seams, their heart broke. They had suffered more than most during the Data Scourge, but they still sympathized with those around them: the citizens whose lives were upended or cut short and the Starfinders who felt shame and suspicion. Determined to mend the widening rifts between agents and offer them the support they needed to recover, Ziggy founded a new faction: the Advocates.

The shirren Starfinder Zigvigix sits in their wheelchair, typing on a chair-mounted datapad while gazing at the viewer.

Ziggy’s passion, heart, and understanding caused the faction’s ranks to quickly swell. Members of the Advocates are sometimes referred to as “Heartloves” as a nod to both their mission and Ziggy’s favorite band (Strawberry Machine Cake).

Faction Leader: Zigvigix (LG host shirren soldier) was a long-standing member of the Exo-Guardians. They suffered severe injuries prior to the Scoured Stars, which prevented them from taking part in that ill-fated expedition. Despite being overwhelmed with survivor’s guilt, Zigvigix took up leadership of the remaining Exo-Guardians. During the Data Scourge, they were taken prisoner by the Scourge’s perpetrator, who later used the shirren’s cybernetics to infect Guidance with a corrupting virus. Zigvigix tore out their own cybernetic implants to prevent the digital infection from spreading and has only recently recovered from the ordeal. Though Zigvigix admits they have much healing to do, they take comfort in their relationship with Celita, their favorite sugar-pop music, and the support of their colleagues and community.

Motto: We’re here for you!

Year 5 Goal: The Advocates aim to heal the widening rifts between factions, unite the squabbling Starfinder agents into an accepting, loving, and supportive community, and encourage the Starfinder Society to do good throughout the Pact Worlds and beyond.

Boons: Like all our factions, the Advocates have a slate of unique boons available for purchase with Achievement Points by members of the Advocates faction with the appropriate amount of Reputation. Today we’re revealing three of these boons! Note that these boons are not yet final and may change slightly before release.

Loyal Friend (Slotless Boon):
Your strong bonds of friendship help center your thoughts. You gain a +1 morale bonus to saving throws against the confused condition. When you have the confused condition and would be forced to attack an ally, you instead do nothing but babble incoherently.
Requirements: 5+ Reputation with Advocates
AcP Cost: 2

Protector’s Offense (Slotless Boon):
You’ve trained to protect your allies from harm as often as you protect yourself. When you successfully strike a target with a melee attack using a weapon with the block special property and increase your AC against that target, your adjacent allies gain a +1 enhancement bonus to their AC for 1 round against melee attacks from that same target. This bonus only applies as long as they remain adjacent to you.
Requirements: 15+ Reputation with Advocates
AcP Cost: 4

Determined Medic (Slotless Boon):
You’ve trained for innumerable emergency situations and are a capable combat medic in a pinch. Once per adventure as a standard action, you can treat a willing, adjacent creature to remove one of the following conditions: frightened, nauseated, paralyzed, shaken, sickened, or staggered. This doesn’t end the effect that caused the condition, and the target can regain the condition from any source as normal.
Requirements: 25+ Reputation with Advocates
AcP Cost: 4

I hope you’ve enjoyed this sneak peek at the upcoming Advocates faction! Come back at the end of the month when we reveal information on the Cognates!

Wishing you all the best, Starfinders! Take care of each other out there.

The previous blog post said there would be three new factions. This one says two. Is there a miscommunication somewhere, or is the third just Manifold Host or something like that?

(EDIT: Alex said on Discord that the other two are the Cognates and Manifold Host.)

As for the advocates themselves, hm, this sounds like the perfect faction for my -701. Granted, he's 13th level, so he's probably not going to get a whole lot of play anyway...

As I understand it, Fame is gone in Starfinder Society. I'm guessing you meant converting reputation from already-played games? You're probably right when you say probably not. If nothing else, it would mangle Paizo's tracking information. However, since there's no longer a "cost" to champion a particular faction anymore, just starting to play for one of the new factions shouldn't be an issue.

If you go to the GM/Event Coordinator tab of your My Organized Play page, and then hit "Refresh Points," it'll give you achievement points based on all your pre-achievement point SFS games that were reported! Which is to say, the option is already there.

But outside of the achievement point/Fame discussion, this is exactly what several of my SFS characters have been gunning for. Sola Ford has even been trying to form a faction like this unofficially since 2020... so I'm quite pleased, to say the least.

And remember, folks. Starship hulls are UNION STRONG.

The reason it says two new factions is probably that our organization, the Manifold Host, has existed for a while, unlike the other two which are newly founded due to recent events. Despite the lack of recognition and support from the rest of the Society, Harmony of Many, Charla Ritzpan and the rest of us have been working to protect and further the interests of minority species within the ranks of the Starfinder Society for years now.

It is wonderful First Seeker Ehu Hadif and the Forum will be giving us a chance to take a more active role within the Society.

Ziggy! I wanna be a Heartlove!

Will the Advocates (and Cognates) be full factions, or minor factions like Manifold Host and SS Roheas?

Dataphiles

From the sound of it, full factions. The Manifold Host is going to be joining the ranks of fully and freely joinable factions as well.

So as of Season Five, it seems there are going to be almost 10 Factions to support

Edit: Correction, there will be at least 10. The three well known flavors of Second Seekers (Jadnura, Luwasi, Ehu, but not sure about Roheas or others), the four factions that developed during the Scoured Stars Incident (Acquisitives, Dataphiles, Exo-Guardians and Wayfinders), and the three factions newly coming to the forefront (Advocates, Cognates, and the Manifold Host). Personally interested in learning about the Cognates, since they seem likely to be a foil to the Dataphiles, certainly from what I recall about ol' Royo.

So they are expanding Manifold Host into a full faction? Awesome! It is what we always deserved!

It depends on how you define minor factions. We're calling them minor factions because they don't quite have the same in-world influence that the previous factions have (yet!). However, you will be able to freely join all three beginning with the launch of Year 5, and they will all have a full slate of boons (lovingly crafted by Jessica) for faction members to obtain.

Oh I won't sue! It's very flattering that my character was the inspiration for Miss Ritzpan, who I look forward to meeting in a game one day. So... did you write the adventure where we finally learn more about the Manifold Host, Alex?

My question about Minor Factions is has Manifold Hosts boons and tier levels expanded to be the same size as those from the Wayfinders or Exo-Guardians? My copy of the Manifold Host boon only shows three tiers currently. I am wondering if you expanded it.

To the first: Yup!

To the second: Yup!

I'm also wondering about that. Will Manifold Host be getting new boons? Other than the tier 3 Manifold Host Exemplar that frees up your personal boon slot the other boons are a hodgepodge of boons from the other factions.

Also, while probably impossible to implement it might be neat if we had something for pre-year 5 Manifold Host members, like a Manifold Host Veteran boon or vanity.

Wayfinders 4/5 5/55/55/55/5 ****

(Creepy deadpan voice) I started as Manifold Host, then went to wayfarers when I learned all I could from them. But these Advocates sound like an even better match.

Guess I should have done more Starfinder recently as this is a bit of a spoiler for me, but at least Ziggy seems fine that is the most important bit.

I absolutely love the evolution of Ziggys story, it's a fantastic change and direction from the usual 'hero' story we see and just as, if not more important to see such things in fiction and to tell the stories about it.

However, I admit that I think ever putting fan, employee, or other personal characters into your for profit fiction is a poor choice. Whilst I very much get desire to celebrate friends and associates or put forth a personal character someone is proud of there's very little to be gained imo and it can potentially have huge fallout in the future in some rare cases, beyond that it simply feels in poor taste and supports the view that if you know the right people you get preferential treatment.

I do wish Ziggy had taken back over the Exo-Gs (as the new guy feels very interim coach-y and I'm not really a fan)but this new faction sounds interesting at least. Intrigued to see what sort of scenarios they lead to.

I believe that is why Charla Ritzpan is Charla Ritzpan and not Charli Poshkettle -- she was inspired by a character of mine, but is ultimately her own thing. I was not consulted when the character was first created, though thrilled by the compliment. In my head canon, she's a fellow gnome that spent more time on the Starfinder Society factions and less on her own personal tea empire.

I did achieve the 'Starfinder of Note' boon, but ultimately, Charla Ritzpan is a separate entity and NPC.

You could just stop talking about it, to avoid feeding the narrative that people wrote you a faction based on favoritism.

I am with Rich on this one, whether it is a copy or heavily inspired, I think it is a very bad idea to attach fictional characters to real people like this.

Hmm

And i just realized the Season 5 art is someone (patrha?), Ehu, some buglike person, and Ziggy. Maybe the new faction leaders.
Is the Manifold Host leader already known?

I suspect that is Harmony of Many, the barathu leader of Manifold Host.

By process of elimination, that suggests the remaining character is Royo.
