New Ways to Play on VTTs

Tuesday, April 27, 2021

We’re now well past the 1-year mark for social distancing, working from home, and other ways to deal with the ongoing pandemic, and that means we’ve all had a long time to start Pathfinder and Starfinder games on virtual tabletops (VTTs), like Astral, d20Pro, Fantasy Grounds, Foundry Virtual Tabletop, and Roll20. As we approach our second virtual PaizoCon next month, I wanted to give an update on some of the progress we’ve made in making distanced play easier for both players and GMs.

Navasi, the iconic envoy, is engrossed in an array of computer screens, each displaying a different view of an alien world.

We’ve long had partnerships with Astral, d20Pro, Fantasy Grounds, and Roll20, and each continues to support both our games to varying degrees. Starting today, we also offer premium content for Foundry Virtual Tabletop as well. The community has done an incredible job of supporting Pathfinder and Starfinder using the OGL and Community Use Policy, but we thought it made sense to offer more official content for those who want it.

A Foundry Module Sample with flip mats, icons, and pop up module art

You can purchase the first five Pathfinder Bounties for $5 each right now, and we’re looking into how we can add more great Foundry-compatible modules in the future! These are something of a test for us, as they’re converted internally (rather than by someone at Foundry Virtual Tabletop) and are hosted here on the Paizo store. Let us know how the process works and what other premium content you’d like to see and we’ll build out a plan to expand our offerings.

We’re continuing to look into our options for getting more accessories like item cards, pawn/token sets, and other products you’ve all come to expect from both Pathfinder and Starfinder onto our various VTT partners’ stores, so let us know what you want to see and we’ll try to make it happen.

Regardless of how much longer we’re all living under the restrictions of the pandemic, VTTs are here to stay, and we want to make it as easy as possible for you to enjoy our many Pathfinder and Starfinder products on them for years to come.

Fantastic! I would love to see an official token pack for Foundry but it's great to have official support!

Finally, partnerships with Foundry! Hooray! Really hope we can get full APs there in the future :)

Great to hear the Foundry support! The software and community is out of this world awesome!

Side note: Link to Foundry (https://foundryvtt.com/) is missing in the first sentence.

It's great to see that Foundry is now officially on Paizo's radar as a VTT worth targeting and supporting. Looking forward to seeing more integrated material on there in the future!

I am very excited about this! I hope eventually we're able to get some licensed token packs within FoundryVTT!

This is friggin' awesome.

Finally!!! This is great news! I really hope the next AP comes as natively supported by Foundry, with walls and dynamic lighting set up and maybe ambience sounds as well! That would be awesome and guarantee a much deeper automatic immersion without having GMs jumps through hoops to make that happen

Thank you for adding the chronicle sheet to the content of the Bounties, that makes them much easier to recommend.

So with the partnership. Will we be able to get a system with the most up to date rules/sourcebooks?

As well as AP books being imported as worlds?

Would be a nice thing to get along side the PDFs for those with subscriptions.

How does this affect PDF to Foundry and other community-use compliant modules?

My personal hope is that they continue doing what they do, but perhaps they will need to remove the content that Paizo is also offering. Are those modules being updated to remove the content Paizo's publishing?

I am happy to pay, but I do think a discount for PDF-owners is in order, especially for APs/Modules, which are more expensive to begin with. I hope that is at least being considered: one of the main draws of Foundry is its cost-efficiency as opposed to Roll20 or FGU, which can quickly soar into the hundreds of dollars with premium subscription models and pricey game addons.

So am I missing something? I purchased Bounty # 1, I see in my downloads but when I try to get the code to open it up in foundry from my downloads nothing happens. Is there an issue or am I not understanding how this should work?

By the way this is awesome!!!!

This is fantastic!

Thanks so much. Hoping to see much more of this in the future!

Excellent! Foundry has been the best VTT to play PF2E on for a while, now, and it's good to see Paizo bringing native content to it! Thanks!

Fantastic news, not too interested in the bounties, but if you made this for the bestiary 1/2/3 I would buy that instantly. Depending on the price I would be interested in the APs as well as I am running Extinction Curse, Age of Ashes and planning a Abomination Vault run as well in the future, but since I already have put a lot of work into those I may nor may not jump on it.

I am actually having the same issue. The problem is there does not seem to be a way to get the activation key from Paizo. You are supposed to be able to get it from your digital downloads area on the Paizo site. It just doesn't work.

I bought the first 5 offered bounties. Bounties 2,3, and 4 gave me the product code in my paizo downloads. For bounties 1 and 5 it says "click here to fetch serial number". When i click there, the web page looks like it's doing something, refreshes, and then no change. I have tried "refreshing" my downloads.

Is this a known issue or something I need to take to CS/Website feedback?

Exact same thing is happening with me.

Yay! Great move Paizo! Now, let's get the upcoming AP into Foundry as well... =D

Sounds good Aaron, thanks for being on top of it :)

As long as those modules are compliant with the Community Use Policy, this should have no effect on them. Paizo's premium Foundry content doesn't interact with the Community Use Policy at all, really.

Very excited about this! We love Foundry and look forward to more Pathfinder games using it!

I hope you support those who already own the bestiary, battle cards, and pawn sets with the free codes to get the art integrated into the PF2e bestiary compendium. The OGL bestiary is already free, so we just want the art.

Or enable the adventure importer to also be an art importer for all the books, as they already import npc art in the adventures for easy linking to the NPC sheets.

Also the isometric module is popular so I hope you provide the creature art in full portrait sans token rings, as well as tokens as appears in the GM placement maps. Even just as a directory of named .WEBP for easy import with the Image Compendium module, please do not use PNG or JPG.

Foundry modules have the most transparent DLC with automatic updates interface that is decades better than the Paizo download site, so I hope it is utilizing that.

This is something to worry about since their existing policy for other VTT is you pay physical book price comparable to what Amazon would charge and if you own the PDF then that is discounted using the Paizo/FG store links or you get the PDF using the FG/Paizo store link with the purchase of the FG module.

So you end up paying for each media you use the material in, rather than having portable materials which is what the PDF by definition is supposed to be.

I really like the way the Foundry PF2e adventure importer works, that your PDF watermark is your authorization codes, and on top of that you get the community created map wall layers as part of the import.

Make the watermarked PDF the authorization codes instead, simple as that. So what everybody really want is just named .webp (not .jpg not .png) for creatures (token and portrait versions) so we do not have to suffer thru PDF ripping methods for content we already own. Things like Flip Tiles are already available as .jpg alternates from Paizo and import straight into foundry with no other work than copying into the user data directory and pointing to that directory (unless you want to convert to .webp)

As a Foundry VTT user, what I really want are token packs. Bestiary token packs, with a variety of colours/options for each monster. AP Token packs. Module token packs. NPC / GMG Token Packs for when I go off-script.

The PDF2Foundry module already does a great job of allowing import of module PDFs into Foundry, so re-buying all the PDFs in a VTT (especially for AP Subscribers) doesn't seem like a good value proposition.

If you could just make the maps in your adventures available as vector images instead of bitmaps, they could easily be imported into any VTT without looking terrible.

The real question is, is support going to include first edition Pathfinder?

Without support for first edition, there would be no reason for me to purchase anything.

I'm convinced FoundryVTT is the best way to play PF2 right now. The developers over on discord have done an incredible job and it just keeps getting better and better.

What I'd like to see:

Portraits and token packs for Bestiary and Adventure creatures. Pretty much the same as those available as Pawns.

Some sort of package deal when you buy PDFs to include FoundryVTT assets as well, at the very least a discount when purchasing both the PDF and the FoundryVTT assets.

Thank you!

I just redownloaded the AP book to make sure, on a new computer, and the pictures were high resolution... then I redownloaded it on my normal computer, and the pictures were low resolutions... I fear that there's a browser cache issue or something... I'll try other things later tonight when I won't be during my work hours... this is starting to intrigate me a lot...

YES! As someone GMing the abomination vaults on Foundry can you please prioritize getting your awesome art/bestiary tokens to my module list as quick as possible? It would save me so much prep time tokenizing all the monsters.

This is great news!

Just bought all 5 bounties to show support for any official content from paizo for foundry!

Also really would love token packs for the bestiaries for foundry!

Personally not super interested in official modules, but I really, really want to buy token packs and high resolution AP/adventure maps so that I don't have to scavenge for DungeondDraft maps.

I'm buying hardcover only without a Paizo subscription (shipping to EU would double the price) and I can't really justify paying double for getting the PDFs as well.

Please throw an analog customer some bones :D

Really great news!

I checked out one scene of a bounty that someone was kind enough to host on Foundry today, and one of the things I noticed was that the token art had that circle around it that many use. I really hope that when you make tokens packs available that you will include art with just the creature image and a transparent background. I think that looks much better. More natural. Especially for larger creatures that take up more than 1 square, the circle background is really jarring.

Another thing I noticed was that you used a lot of little wall segments. You should know that the number of wall segments greatly impact performance on lower end computers. It's always a balance between what looks good vs. performance, and I think you could go more in favour of performance (at least on the one scene that I saw).

I couldn't tell if you already do this, but I would suggest making journal entries for every location in an adventure. That way the entry can be dragged onto the map for easy reference. Prepping a location is really a lot easier when you have the map with all the entries laid out if front of you, and can just click through them. I mean a _lot_ easier.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the feedback (both JavobJ and the rest of the folks on this thread, the Foundry discord, and beyond)!

This is something we've already got in there, but it might not be immediately obvious. When looking at the journal entries for the locations, click on the "Image" tab to see the tagged map for the associated location. If that's not working, please let us know so we can fix it!

Everything you need to run this bounty as part of the Pathfinder Society (second edition) organized play campaign, including notes on rewards and a distributable Chronicle Sheet.

I feel like Paizo buried the lede on product features here.

As someone newer to VTT, I honestly don't know what a "premium module" consists of, or what to expect. The phrase means nothing to me. Do all "premium modules" contain all the content you need? Is that something people know, in general?

I was concerned I'd have to buy the PDF and the module, thus making it cost around $8 per bounty. But digging a little further, it seems that is not the case as the module has everything you need. I guess I'm a big dummy, because I had to drill down into the product pages to figure all this out on my own.

And the chronicles even included! Awesome.

Now… please include chronicles as separate files in the regular scenarios too :p
