Starfinder Precog Playtest Coming Soon!

Tuesday, November 03, 2020

In less than two weeks, we will be launching a playtest for a new Starfinder spellcaster class—the precog!

A tall insect-like creature standing on its hind legs while summoning a ball of blue light between their hands

This playtest is your chance to get a look at an early version of this new class and have a hand in its development before it hits shelves in an upcoming book!

Playtesting the Precog

The precog playtest launches on November 16, 2020, and runs through December 25, 2020. So how can you help playtest this new class? First, you’ll want to download the free PDF of the playtest from starfinderplaytest.com (available starting on November 16th). Then you can create a brand new precog of any level using the new rules. We're most interested in feedback from actual play, so it's best if you can get some friends together and play a few sessions using your new character. If possible, make up characters at different levels to get a sense of how they work at different points in their career. There's no accompanying playtest adventure—you can use the new class in existing adventures like Starfinder Society scenarios or Starfinder Adventure Paths, or even mock combats that you create yourself using the Starfinder Core Rulebook’s encounter-creation rules. It might be helpful to take some notes during play, so you can remember your thoughts on the experience after the game session. To gather the most useful data for this playtest, we ask that you avoid using house rules and play these characters using only published rules from the Starfinder RPG.

Playtesting in the Starfinder Society

Players participating in Starfinder Society Organized Play can also join in the worldwide playtest to test the precog class. From November 16th until the playtest's completion, players can create custom precog characters of levels 1, 4 and 8. These custom characters use many of the same rules as pregenerated characters, though the Organized Play team has slightly relaxed the rules in order to encourage playtesting these new classes. For more information, check out this afternoon's blog about using the precog in Starfinder Society.

Survey

Our primary means of collecting feedback for the playtest is through a survey that we would like everyone participating in the playtest to complete. A link to the survey will be available on the playtest page starting on November 16th. Please make sure you've filled out your survey by December 25,2020.

In addition to responding via the official survey, you can engage with other players and designers on the playtest forum—a link will appear on starfinderplaytest.com—to discuss the precog and possibilities for the future. While we want to focus on actual-play feedback, we're interested in hearing all of your ideas about the class.

What are your thoughts about the playtest? Are you excited? Do you have any questions about the playtest process? Let us know in the comments below!

More Starfinder casting classes? Yes, please! This is super exciting and I can't wait to see it.

So does this mean we're getting a magic-book after tech revolution? Color me excited!

Ahhhhhh! SUPER EXCITEMENT! I actually wrote the first version of this class (which SF Lead Designer Joe went and expertly fixed up!).

But yeah, first class of mine out in the wild. I'm only mostly anxious on seeing all the reactions!

Because 2020 couldn't get any crazier, someone let Thursty write a class??

I like insanity, though: I'm in. This should be good! I'm really looking forward to seeing how this turns out...

Shouldn't the precog know how the playtest will go?

Thursty saw 14,000,605 futures... The only one where we stalled Shax's plan to turn Absalom Station into his House of Pain included a playtest.

That is ghibrani bestiary art from dead suns

Second Seekers (Jadnura)

Can't wait!

Doesn't sound exciting, although I missed the mech and nanocyte classes.

Dope! Very excited to see where this (presumably spellcaster?) sits in relation to the other classes.

The actual iconic will be a jabroni.

Placeholder art. We might have an iconic sketch by the launch of the playtest? We will share it when we get it!

Very exciting! I've been hoping for a more "future magic" dedicated book for Starfinder for a long time.

Do we have a sketch for the iconic Nanocyte yet? Since I assume we'll presumably be getting this class after the full Nanocyte drops.

At this point, we'll probably hold off showing the nanocyte at all until they get a Meet the Iconics backstory. The sketches are cool in playtests when the timing works out, but my preference would be to hold off and show the complete, shiny final art instead of works in progress if we miss that timing window.

Wait, mech is a CLASS? I thought it was a new category of equipment...

I am surprised. Precog seems nicher than the other casting classes concept wise. Perhaps with nanocyte it is a new direction for SF classes.

Well... definitely did not expect this. I agree with the remark that this seems a bit more niche. At least compared to the Witchwarper or the Nanocyte. But then again all we have is the name and that its a spell caster.

Curious, but I'm more curious what this means behind the scenes. This can't be for GEM, too late and doesn't feel like it fits the theme of the book. Can't be for Tech Revolution, not unless Paizo's breaking their "one class per Ultimate Sourcebook" rule. Precog doesn't sound like it fits the theme anyway.

So unless they're sick of monster manuals or plan on doing some weird for 2021, we're not going to see this again after the playtest until 2022... Or this is a really early April Fools gag.

The playtest is at the end of year (it literally ends on Christmas), why would you think we get it early-ish next year?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Whoa, another class playtest already? Thanks, Paizo! That's really nice.

Precog...nition? As in a "psychic" class?

....

I was speculating where the hell this was going to be fit in based on the time table and what we know about the release schedule. Next time pay attention.

I read your whole post, next time don't weave insults into your questions ("Or is this a really early April's Fools gag.") and get snippy when people who try to focus on your query respond.

Pre-cog, and anti-Mechanic class focused on using gremlins to sabotage stuff.

From the name I assume it will be a supporter/buffer. Not sure if SF needs another support class.

I doubt that Paizo will use wordplay for class names (Pre-Cog) as the class names should describe what the class does and not mislead the reader. (Although it would be nice flavor)

I've seen first hand Shax's House of Pain on Absalom Station under Thursty's designs. It's beautiful. And terrifying.

The only thing I get from the name is that it's gimmick is going to be based on some form of precognition of the future. Support & buffing is certainly one way to go with that(you know what's coming so you're better able to prepare & warn your allies for it, I can see it), but they could be Spider-Man for we know.

Though the chosen picture of a membrane ghibrani casting a spell would indicate to me they're a caster.

So who knows.

Aside from the paizo devs.

The first sentence of the announcement is "spellcaster class"

7 months is tight, but they done it before. But no, I don't think it'll be in Tech revolution either, even if the final class abilities do end up fitting that theme. I can't think of a benefit to splitting up the playtest into two parts.

I imagine this is going to be a late 2021 release which has yet to be announced. Technically there's no reason they can't put it in an Alien Archive, but it is more likely they're skipping a bestiary next year and going with an additional rulebook.

Second Seekers (Ehu Hadif)

Ready? I was born ready. No seriously. Its VERY annoying.

Or, it is quite possible that Paizo will be taking the time ordinarily dedicated to analog convention season to produce an additional book for next year. Though, this is the less likely possibility.

We don't have extra time due to analog cons. We keep adding digital cons. But this will not be a rush job, no worries. :)

If you keep getting the same error, opening pages that give an error 500 in a private window brings them up normally for me.
