Pathfinder Society Guide to Play

Wednesday, August 14, 2019

The big news – we’ve moved the guide online. The link is http://www.organizedplayfoundation.org/encyclopedia/pfs2guide/.

We decided on an online version after reviewing the feedback from our guide survey last fall. Actually, most of the changes we made came from that survey. Going online allows for quick updates, instead of waiting until the launch of a new Year. This flexibility means a player no longer has to search through blog posts and multiple documents to determine character legality. It also means we can adjust our new campaign based on player feedback, especially important as we settle into the new edition.

Other guide highlights –
• Included a quick start guide
• Revised organization
• Charts and examples for new processes
• Best practices more reflect how the community utilizes the program
• Renamed Additional Resources/Campaign Clarifications to Character Options

The current guide is an interim step, as the guide team looks at different platforms that will accomplish our goals. Some of our short-term desires include removing the alphabetical search function at the top that isn’t very functional, adding a means of downloading content as a pdf file. Based on user feedback, we also a method of printing and the inclusion of robust searching engine on our to-do list.

To aid users in tracking changes, we included a version history and changelog on the top of the main page. Please check back often and make sure you have the most up to date version.

As with all changes, we expect bumps and hiccups. We’ve opened a forum thread for guide commentary. Please add your feedback to this thread.

Come back later to hear what is in store for the Starfinder Society in regards to the Second Seekers.

Until next time – Explore, Report, Cooperate!

This is cool! But also not. I'd really like to have a PDF version of the guide. The PDF navigation y'all put in your PDFs is really top knotch and I actually find it easier to browse that way (in a good PDF reader, like foxit for desktop or Xodo for mobile) than literally any website.

With that said, it is nice to have an online guide for many reasons. One of which is that actually *downloading* the latest version of the guide to a device that doesn't have it yet is a multi step process that is time consuming when I just need a quick answer.

It's in the works.

@Jared: I think key things we need to make this a success are:

* Ability to download as a single-file document. Searching through a dozen pages on a phone at the table is not workable.

* Ability to search exhaustively for a term and be absolutely sure you found all references to it. Note that a single-file or single-page solution automatically enables this through Ctrl+F.

* Clear versioning. If someone downloaded or printed the guide as a file I need to be able to determine if I'm looking at a current version. Given that individual pages might get updated, this needs some thought on how to version single-page/file representations.

* A changelog to help us see what changed during updates.

* A notification system that we can subscribe to so that we stay on top of updates. Maybe enable RSS on the changelog page or a mailing list you can subscribe to for updates?

* One clear place where we can report questions/issues, so that they don't get lost.

All of these are things we are working on.

Sweet i cant wait for you to change the alphabetical search function i agree its not very functional. Good to hear there's possibility of a downloadable version, i have for the last couple of years kept a printed out version in my gm kit for players to reference at the table. Thanks for the update

A website that can update when needed is a great improvement! I'm sure the little starting bugs will be ironed out soon.

This is oh so very complicated. I can't just show up? I guess I'll try to register, but I'll probably end up sticking to private games.

I would definitely communicate ahead of time instead randomly showing up at someone's house.

Awesome! Being new to Pathfinder Society and helping others who have never participated in something like this before, I have found the guide incredibly helpful, especially the examples. Looking forward to more content and more fun.

If it's at a public gaming store or something, then sure, you can just show up. Most groups try to welcome new players and help new players learn as they go.

But once you start making your own characters, and tracking which adventures you've played so you can advance that character, you'll have to be aware of a couple of the rules in the Guide. But again, you can easily learn as you go, and lean on the more experienced players in Society play to point you in the right direction, if you're overwhelmed by learning everything in the Guide, while also learning the new 2e rules.

Edit: On an unrelated note, where'd my GM stars go? I know I haven't been around much lately, but I did earn 4 of them.

Fortunately, if you are just a casual gamer, you can ignore 99% of the complexity.

Just go straight to the Quick Start Guide

That, and the other players at the table, should get you through your first several games.

Your GM stars are on a vacation they are at some undisclosed beach house drinking margaritas. Im sure they will return after con season is over.

I wonder if my GM stars are travelling with Fromper's stars?

Maybe Try going into your "Organized Play", going to the "GM/Event Organizer" tab, and clicking the Recalculate button?

I do like having an online guide that can be updated dynamically. That said, it's super hard to find things with the current UI. Might I recommend a sidebar navigation column similar to D20PFSRD or the PDFs that let you drive down to specific topics?

I never noticed that was there.

Just tried it. It didn't work. Then I tried it again. I think it may have worked the second time.

Edit: Nope. My number of tables on the GM/Event page was updated correctly, but the stars still aren't showing.

The biggest problem with your online guide is that there are no links to it from most of this website.

For example you main page is still showing PF1 links.

Luckily I remembered this blog post, but most people don't even visit this web site.

I know that you lost a web master, but the web site is really a mess considering you just launched a huge new product. I guess at least the forums still work.
