It Takes A Village

Monday, August 12, 2019

Last week we started looking at the forthcoming Pathfinder Battles: Legendary Adventures set of pre-painted plastic miniatures from our partners at WizKids. This week we’ll explore the Goblin Village premium set that releases alongside the Huge booster-based set.

Longtime goblin fans will notice a lot of nods to past goblin adventures in this premium set. When we first started designing this set, I knew we needed to include iconic goblin elements from Pathfinder’s long history, and we plumbed not just our past adventures like Burnt Offerings and We Be Goblins!, but also the “Goblins!” comics from Dynamite Entertainment.

Included in the set are the following components:

• Large Tent x1
• Small Tent x2
• Barricade x3
• Baby Goblin Gate x1
• Palisade Walls x3
• Pigpen Gate x1
• Goblin Babies x1
• Palisade Gate x1
• Pigpen Fence x4
• Magic Pig x1
• Bonfire x2
• Junk Statue x1
• Junk Pile x2
• Pickle Barrel x2
• Throne x1
• Chief Goblin x1
A double-tentpole goblin tent covered in roughly sewn-on patches. A single tentpole goblin tent with frayed edges. Set of three miniatures, each with sharpened pikes sticking up at various angles. A bonfire! A goblin-like figure made from various pieces of junk. The head is a glowing jack-o-lantern with a skull on top. A big pile of junk. A goblin chief sits on a skull-faced throne. Four grinning goblin babies. A gate made of tightly packed wooden poles. A makeshift pig-pen made of sticks and stones. A happy, smiling pig in a sitting position. He wears a wooden crown with flowers on it.

With one Goblin Village premium set, a GM will get enough components to set up a full 360° palisade wall, large enough to hold most of the other components based on the needs of their campaign. That might be a series of tents and the tribe’s magic pig in its pen, or a clutch of goblin babies, ready to present adventurers with a moral quandary about what to do with these innocent balls of destruction. It might be a bonfire to honor the junk effigy worshiped by the superstitious tribe, or a war council overseen by the presiding chief. The possibilities are endless!

A closeup of a goblin village, focused on a large goblin tent with a gate across the opening. Three goblin tents sit inside a circular gated area. The gating is made from long wooden poles. A bonfire is aglow in the center. A pigpen has been set up next o one of the tents and the magic pig sits in hte middle. A close-up shot of the front of the gates of the village. The gates are closed. A closeup of the goblin chieftain on his throne in front of one of the tents. A group of goblin babies stand nearby.

The Chief Goblin is presented in a sitting position and is removable from the throne, and is the same figure as the Goblin Chieftain (Small rare) in the main set.

A goblin chieftain with both hands in the air. The left hand holds a mace with a skull on the end, spikes poking through the openings.

In addition to the goblin babies (unbased) and both versions of the goblin chief, Legendary Adventures also includes a number of goblinoid figures appropriate for both player characters and adversaries. The only goblin that has yet to be revealed is the goblin ankle-slasher (Small uncommon), as both the preview and standard versions of the goblin dog-slicer and goblin guard appeared in previous blogs, and we looked at the goblin horse-chopper “sculpt-share” last week.

A goblin with weapons in each hand, ready to slash any ankles that make themselves available.

Goblins aren’t the only goblinoids in Legendary Adventures, though. Both hobgoblins and bugbears got conceptual makeovers by Wayne Reynolds during our early days of developing Pathfinder Second Edition, and we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to include some figures based on Wayne’s designs in this set. In this set, you will find the bugbear mauler (Medium common), hobgoblin sharpshooter (Medium common), hobgoblin commander (Medium rare), and bugbear butcher (Medium rare) as well as those goblinoids already released in the Legendary Adventures Preview Pack.

A bugbear mauler, large rectangular shield in the left hand, right arm raised with a weapon similar to a glaive. He leans forward as though rushing toward battle. A hobgoblin sharpshooter has bow and arrow at the ready, waiting for a good angle. The hobgoblin commander stands at the read with a long weapon with curved blades on each end. The bugbear butcher menaces with sharp tools in each hand.

And while they’re not particularly thematically linked to the goblinoids of this blog, but because I’d be remiss not to show off a Large or Huge figure from the set at every opportunity, here are the pteranodon (Large uncommon) and boar demon (Huge rare).

A large prehistoric-looking bird with a long face and beak, wings up as though flying. A huge demonic-looking boar, mouth open in a large grin.

Next week we’ll look at the many player character ancestries represented in this set and some of the giant foes the Huge booster format allows GMs to add to their games.

The Teranadon sure is a surprise, and I’m looking forward to the Boar Demon. Too bad he’s a rare. With dinosaurs, demons and aberrations, this set certainly is covering a wide selection of creatures. But I guess that is to be expected for the first huge offerings in quite some time.

The camp exceeded my expectations, it is amazing that all that stuff fits within the walls.

Dark Archive

Are the two bonfires fitted with a LED?
They really look like there is the option to light them up.

I really have to say that this is THE goblinoid set, never have there been so many in one offering.
I count 5 different goblins (6 with the alternate Paint version),
3 bugbears (+1 alternate) &
3 hobgoblins (+ 1 alternate).
In addition to at least three orcs (+ 2 alternate versions).

That makes for a dozen different monstrous humanoids (the alternate weapon versions replace the dressings) out of 44 minis in the set, which is quite a lot.

I am not sure about the pose of the Pteranodon being a good one for use in a battle, it looks more like it is in "flight-mode".
An open maw and broader gliding wings would maybe be better, but i am glad that we get this creature .

We now know 30 of the 44 minis in this set plus two of the (six?) alternate weapon sculpts.

On the Pteranodon, I think it's more combatty that one with the wings open - it looks like it has folded it's wings and is diving in on the party...

Dang, I want all of these. How are these things sold? Is it one complete set you buy or is it a booster pack model that you need to keep snagging things for?

And what should I expect them to cost?

In my count, we should get two more uncommon huge minis in this set.

The most used huge creature in the Adventures which hasn't been made is by far the BULETTE, a CR 7 magical beast in 1e and a creature 8 animal in 2e.

That leaves a whopping 26 other possibilities from the first Bestiary.

I doubt we will get a dinosaur, as there are many toys in the right size.
That eleminates the Ankylosaurus, Elasmosaurus, Stegosaurus & Triceratops.
I also doubt that we will get a real world animal, which takes care of the Elephant, Giant Squid, Mastodon & Orca.
With the huge blue dragon being a rare in this set, it is unlikely it also has the huge green, which is the only missing chromatic huge dragon.
A metallic huge is unlikely too, imo.

That leaves:
-Bebilith (not in the 2e Bestiary)
-Behir (same)
-Black Pudding
-Cloud Giant (the only missing giant)
-Cauchemar
-Froghemoth (we just had one from D&D)
-Giant Flytrap
-Giant Slug
-Remorhaz
-Retriever (Not in the 2e Bestiary)
-Shoggoth
-Treant

Normally i'd say it has to be the SHOGGOTH, as that creature also shows up in every second AP, but i don't think we'll get a third huge rare in this set, which this CR 19 ooze/ creature 18 aberration would have to be.

That makes the Treant being the most likely imo.

Other minis that are much needed are:
-Boar (there is one in "Fall of Plaguestone")
-Cat (as familiar & town animal & animal form)
-Crocodile
-Dire Hyena/Hyaenodon never done in ppm
-Drider (the unique male PF Version)
-Homunculus (never done in ppm)
-Merfolk (male & female please)
-Monkey (never done)
-Pony (never done)
-Rat (never done)
-Rust Monster
-Sea Hag (never done)
-Shocker Lizard (never done)
-Toad/Frog (never done)
-Viper/Snake (never done)

Went to add a subscription and the price discount for the new set isn't the same discount for the previous, its like it is flagged by MSRP instead of Paizo Price. Posted in a couple spots but since this is up I am posting here too.

Posted in the Sub Thread and in CS forum.

Thanks! Want to add the sub under the correct prices!

Boosters are blind boxes, broken out of a brick/case. Bricks are broken from a Case. In a Case you are pretty much guaranteed to get at least 1 of each of the items. This is why there are subscriptions that cost quite a bit less, even get the case incentive at a discount.

Normal Case is 399 from Paizo. Subscription cuts 30% of that cost down to about 280. Case incentives are 75% off for each case you get with your subscription. So you sub to 1 case and get 1 incentive (Goblin Village) at 75% off. MSRP on the village is 100$ so 25 bucks

Subscriptions wind up being right around the 300$ mark for a Sub and Incentive. Gets you the whole set, multiple copies of commons and uncommons and typically at least 1 of each rare, sometimes more.

I just went to make a subscription and the cost appears to be wrong, looks like the discount is applying to the MSRP and I posted in a couple of spots hoping to get it fixed before I subscribe!

WizKids might have put an LED in them for the diorama for dramatic effect, but there are no LEDs in the retail version of the bonfires. You could easily modify them to include such, but they don't come that was standard.

I can't help but interject here, given the article title. :-p

While we're talking about "It takes a village," let's hear it for the many Pathfinder Society volunteers who put in an incredible number of unpaid hours to promote Society play and Paizo's products in general.

Thank you venture officers, agents, store coordinators, judges. None of this larger enterprise would work without your efforts!

That goblin village looks amazing! So excited for this set!

So there are goblin babies in this set? I think the real question here is 'should the paladin get rid of them?'

And that, my friend, is why they are in the set

That is simply diabolical.

nah, goblins aren‘t evil.

Seeing and hearing what all is included in this set has me seriously considering subscribing to the Pathfinder Battles miniatures again. A HUGE dragon! OMG! That is my all-time favorite chromatic dragon!
And of course, an Aboleth and all the other wonderful creatures and characters! (Just not sure if I can afford it).

But I’m really thinking about it.

Well ... I took a little bite, and ordered the preview set of 8 miniatures.

Goblins aren't bad, they're just ... sculpted that way. ;-)

Goblins don’t kill people, DM’s kill people.

These look fantastic.

I'd really like to see a set done for kobolds at some point at this level of detail and care. There's a real lack of decent entries in the adorable lizard in miniature category.

Goblins don't kill people; superfluous apostrophes kill people. <Goblin Grin>

What is the PF1e / D&D name for a boar demon? I cant say I recognize it. Or is it new to 2e?

@Mark Moreland

Could you share how many different HUGE minis are in the set?
My guess is six (4 uncommons & 2 rares), but it could be a different split with the larges.

Thank you, looking forward for (hopefully) tonight's Blog. :-)
