Pathfinder Battles: So Many Bugs!

Monday, February 11, 2019

Paizo is closed today due to inclement weather (better safe than sorry), but that won't keep me from showing off a few new figures from the forthcoming Pathfinder Battles: Ruins of Lastwall set, due out in April. I'll keep the commentary short, however, since almost everyone is working from home.

Here we have three of the bug-people you'll find in Ruins of Lastwall: the Formian Worker (Small common), Formian Warrior (Medium uncommon), and Formian Queen (Large rare). Together, they should form quite the hive for Game Masters using them as either foes or allies of the party.

Formians aren't Pathfinder's only race of anthropomorphic bugs. Ruins of Lastwall also features the prepainted plastic miniatures debut of the Scorpionfolk (Large uncommon), a desert-dwelling race of centaur-like arachnids who guard ancient ruins and other places of power with religious zeal.

While not technically a bug, the Warmonger Devil certainly has features resembling an arthropod. A Large uncommon figure, these denizens of Hell are sure to strike fear into any army they march to battle against.

Our last two previews for the week aren't bugs, per se, but they are certainly bug-adjacent. The first is the Roiling Oil, a Large uncommon ooze designed to fit a Medium or smaller figure at its center, engulfing the poor creature with its suffocating slime.

And finally, we have the Wormswarm Sorcerer (Medium rare), a sinister spellcaster whose body is composed entirely of a mass of wriggling worms.

That's it from snow-covered Seattle this week. Check in next time to be converted to one of Lake Encarthan's most ambitious faiths, the cult of the Living God, Razmir.

RAZMIR!

I want that wormswarm sorcerer so bad. I've got an idea for a worm-that-walks BBEG and that'd be perfect.

Excellent now I have a Formain for my Starfinder character.

Yes! Formians were on my bucketlist, and now there are three varieties. I’m really looking forward to amassing a small army of them.

And the Roiling Oil looks fantastic. Between it and the new shadow, enveloping monsters are becoming ever more effective on the tabletop. I hope that swarms going forward are as functional.

And a really cool worm that ealks option is another must have.

This review has turned the corner for me on retaining my subscription.

No creatures from the Bestiary this week. ;-(

Bestiary 2:
Worm that Walks: We already had a named version of this CR 14 vermin as a rare in "Wrath of the Righteous" (#47 Xanthir Vang). This one looks better, almost exactly like the art on page 237, but it is a rare again.

Bestiary 3:
Girtablilu: This CR 8 monstrous humanoid from page 130 looks pretty cool and at uncommon rarity, it should be easy to put together a "patrol" (3-5) of them. Nice job.

Bestiary 4:
Formian Worker: This CR 1/2 monstrous humanoid from page 113 looks pretty cool and at common variety it should be possible to amass enough of them.

Formian Warrior:Unfortunately the spear pose is stupid on this CR 3 monstrous humanoid from page 112.

These two are also appearing in the "Starfinder Alien Archive" on pages 50 & 51, but they look slightly different there.

Formian Queen: This CR 17 leader of the "hive" looks great and is definetly on my list.

Bestiary 5:
Roiling Oil: This CR ooze from page 210 is a solitary creature, so it's rarity is strange. It could be used for all kinds of oozes though i suppose.

Warmonger Devil: This CR 7 outsider from page 81 also appears in "Starfinder Alien Archive 2", so getting three of them will be doubly useful.

We have now seen all twelve large minis, which is cool.

I also assume that "Razmir" is the fourth "deity" to appear in this set, most likely with a common cultist and an uncommon one.

I only wish we could have seen the whole "Cemetary of the Fallen" case incentive earlier, as i would likely have ordered two if i had known it includes fences and a gate.

I would love to know how many palisades walls the "Goblin Village" includes in time to know how many i need to order. ;-)

So many bugs, still so few wayangs, vine leshies, kitsune, nagaji and other playable races.

I just realized this:

The good thing about this set:
We get 12 different large minis again instead of 11 as in "Kingmaker".

The bad thing: The "Ankou" mini cut from Kingmaker isn't in it.

I second the need for playable race minis, the less common races are woefully unrepresented. The roiling oil thing is great! Larges made to accomadate mediums would also be good for mounts and companion creatures.

I too want to emphasize this. Too many times we've had these races at the table and they don't have a proper mini. It's been brought up before by staff that a "true kitsune" can use any mini because no one's supposed to know that you're a kitsune. >_>

Bit surprised they gave Formian Queen wings since 1) they don't have fly speed 2) I don't think queens in bug hives usually have wings anymore once they become queens? They have wings at princess stage

First off, this entire set looks very appealing to me. The psychopomps and other creatures announced earlier have me really excited--they were a glaring omission in my eyes leading up to this set.

That trend continues with the reveals this week. The Formian crew is amazing, and sates my appetite for Monstrous Humanoids. It also checks off the boxes for more group-building, something Paizo has been excellent with in regards to their Battles line. I'm big into vermin, at least in my games, so this whole preview was great for me.

The Girtablilu is a major win for me, too. I've always had a thing for scorpions, so naturally they've made it into my campaigns somewhat frequently. I've been using the scorpion we received a handful of sets back for a stand-in, but now I'll have the real thing!

I'll never say no to more devils. Admittedly, I've only ever used the warmonger devils once, but it's nice to have them. I know they are from Bestiary 5, but I feel like they go way back before that. I've found that while I'll never not use a creature just because it has no mini, when it does have representation I tend to use it more often.

The Roiling Oil sounds like the failed name of a Texas team from the new Alliance of American Football League that just started play this past weekend. Great concept, tough name to say. In all seriousness, those of us purchasing a case will likely get three or four. I just got a mini-painting set for holidays; I'll likely be repainting a few so I have different types of ooze. The miniature itself looks great. Oozes are one of the more under-represented types in miniature form. Everyone does the basics, like Grey ooze, Gelatinous Cube, and a few others. But it's always nice to get new types.

Among the bigger downsides should Pathfinder Battles completely transition to PF2 (in miniatures production) after Ruins of Lastwall is how many great opportunities we'll lose. Pathfinder has some of the best artwork when it comes to Ooze, Plants, and Fey throughout their Bestiaries. Here's hoping that if they do stick to the Pathfinder 2 track with their newer sets, the new Bestiary isn't a carbon copy of the Bestiary 1 in terms of creature selection. That goes double, now that it appears Huge-sized creatures are possible.

Hope they make up for it in the first PF2 set, with the new art style.

I doubt anyone who wants them would have minded the rare player races in both art styles, instead of „yet another goblin“.

I like the formian, the Warmonger Devil looks like a decent stand in for a Myrmarch or Taskmaster, a shame we didn’t get either of those as an uncommon to complete the hive composition.

Allow me to fourth the need for these.

Of the two things I regret most about the Pathfinder Battles line, it is the lack of Huge-sized creatures, and the lack of representation for playable races. The former looks to have been taken care of going forward. The latter...we shall see.

I totally understand that the desire for such minis likely isn't far-reaching. But considering they are actual playable-races this company put forth as options, it's a bit disappointing to see them get the miniature shaft. To be fair, this criticism basically applies to all areas of Pathfinder content. The Advanced Race Guide was put out in 2012, and then many of the races largely forgotten. Here's hoping hat isn't the case for PF2.

I know PF1 is closing up shop soon, but I still think it would have behooved the good folks at Paizo to have kept a design team going for PF1 material. Maybe just one possible subscription-option, that encompassed PF1 Player Companions, Campaign Settings, Modules, and even an Adventure Path every now and then. Instead of focusing mainly on the original options, they could have continued to flesh out all the playable races in Advanced Race Guide that never received much love. Likewise, they could have continued working with the Occult classes and other such under-represented Pathfinder classes. After finally having a chance to run some campaigns that featured these classes, all I can say is they were a blast. Probably the most fun I've had in a long time, both as a DM and as a player, too!

Getting back to miniatures... I'm really hoping we see some of these playable races represented at some point in PF2 lines. At the minimum, a Pathfinder Battles: Advanced Race line would be great. Even if we only get one representation of each mini, at least we'd have one.

While i think that PFB set #17 aka "Legendary Adventures" will probably feature the more basic creatures judging from the previews and considering it is the starter set for an entire new edition (and it seems already planned out completely), i think PFB set #18 should include a few "Advanced races" minis.

We don't know which races will make it into the new "Bestiary 2.0", though
and it is questionable if creatures which don't exist (yet) will be getting a miniature.

The actual Bestiary has the following playable races minis:

-Aasimar (RR #58 & DF #34) f & m
-Drow (NONE)
-Duergar (GenCon 2015 repaint) m
-Genie, Janni (LG #41) male
-Goblin (numerous minis) 2f, rest m
-Hobgoblin (DF #8, #9 & #10) 1f, 2m
-Kobold (LG #3, #4, #16, #17 & #39)
-Merfolk (NONE)
-Orc (HM #5 & #6, LG #12, #13 & #14, CF #34) all m
-Svirfneblin (NONE)
-Tengu (SAS #26,MD #35) both m
-Tiefling (WR #42, MD #7) both male

Out of twelve playable races, three didn't receive any minis & one only a special miniature.

Out of the eight races which did receive regular minis, four didn't receive female versions.

I really hope that PFB 2.0 does a better job overall, at least we know that orcs get both male and female minis. ;-)

And it should be emphasized that if a race is playable, there is also a good chance that bad guys of that race will appear, and minis will be needed by the GM. For example, there is a PFS scenario wherein most of your opponents are wayangs.

These Wizkids New York Toy Fair pictures show both the "Ruins of Lastwall" boosters and the "Cemetary of the Fallen" case incentive and it looks absolutely incredible!!!

Twentyone pieces!

I only wish i had known earlier that the set includes so many cool fences pieces (one gate, four long fences and two short fences), i would have ordered two.
I hope i'll get the one i ordered (as the order cut-off from www.blackfire.eu and www.previews.com was already over by the time we got that info) and try to order a second one.

This is the first playset which allows a complete scenery to be built and let's face it, a cemetary/graveyard scene is part of almost every campaign.
Super-usefull!

It looks like the "Goblin Village" case incentive could be the next complete scenery set, as a wooden palisades encampment are also a staple in fantasy rpgs.

Please Mark Moreland, show us or at least tell us, how many walls are included and if you can use two sets to build a larger village early enough (probably by june), so i can order two. ;-)

Wizkids have pushed the release date for "Ruins of Lastwall" from april to may 2019!

"Pathfinder Battles: Iconic Heroes Evolved" is also still scheduled for may 2019.

No changes (yet) for the "Legendary Adventures preview pack" (august 2019) & "Pathfinder Battles: Legendary Adventures" miniatures set (september 2019).

More recent minis news:

"D&D Icons of the Realms: Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage" miniatures will release on march 6th.

I at least am not complaining, running low on shelf space and the extension will not be up till September.

It will be interesting to see how much that evolved Goblin is gonna cost if separated from the pack, as I really don’t need yet another version of the other iconics.

MTG is listing Damiel with 24€ for which I‘m like „yeah, good I got the whole box“

Yesterday on Presidents Day we understandably didn't get a new minis blog, but i hope we'll get the one with "Razmir" tonight, even if the release date is still 10-14 weeks away.

There are currently no plans to delay the last few minis previews until later, in part because we expect the blog to be very full in a month or two's time
