Pathfinder Battles: Shining Crusaders

Tuesday, January 15, 2019

Welcome to 4719, Pathfinders! We in the Paizo word mines are hard at work putting together a huge slate of new products for the year but that doesn't mean that I can't take a few minutes to show off some of the new figures coming out this April in the next set of Pathfinder Battles prepainted plastic miniatures from our partners at WizKids.

The Ruins of Lastwall set features lots of figures useful in playing out the conflict between the knights of Lastwall and the forces of the lich lord known as the Whispering Tyrant. For nearly 900 years the stalwart Knights of Ozem have stood watch over the lich's prison from their fortified capital of Vigil, the last remnant of the forces of good whose victory in the Shining Crusade saved the world from the tyrant's grasp. And now players and GMs will have all the figures they need to amass their own army of paladins, knights, and regimented soldiers of light.

The first two figures were drawn from the same inspiring piece of art from the Pathfinder library, this stunning half-page illustration of Lastwall's forces preparing for battle by Craig J. Spearing. In the foreground, we have the Lastwall Soldier, a rank-and-file soldier in the crusader army. Wearing a simple cloak of the purest white, emblazoned with the holy symbol of Iomedae, this Medium common figure is one you'll be glad to have multiples of.

Towering over the soldiers is the Lastwall General atop his rearing charger. His polished gold plate and raised standard serve as inspiration to his subordinates and paint an intimidating picture for the forces of undeath rallied against them. A Large uncommon figure, the Lastwall General can also serve as a PC cavalier or paladin when mounted.

I showed off the Lastwall Knight (Medium uncommon) back in September when the set was announced, but she's not the only elite figure in the set. Check out the Lastwall Paladin with his banner and longsword issuing a challenge to the forces of evil. He's a Medium uncommon figure, so collectors should end up with a few of him to add variety to their Lastwall army or to serve as PCs, cohorts, or prominent NPCs from the ranks of the Knights of Ozem.

When these noble warriors fall in battle, they deserve a fitting final rest. In the catacombs of Vigil lie the remains of countless paladins and soldiers who dedicated themselves to keeping the Whispering Tyrant contained in his prison. The Crypt Wall set dressing depicts one of these catacomb niches, complete with four removable shelves and three decaying corpses so you can customize your use of it.

The Knights of Lastwall don't stand alone against the forces of evil, though. No, the Great Beytond is full of powerful beings who want to see the Whispering Tyrant's forces turned back from their ambitions of conquest. Among them are the noble gold dragons who call Golarion's plains home. The Large Gold Dragon here (Large uncommon) is just one of the mortal beings who may come to the knights' aid (or serve as wise advisors or “quest-givers” for PCs).

From beyond the borders of our realities, the celestial hosts of the upper planes may be summoned or called by powerful clerics or arcane spellcasters, the most formidable of which is the Empyrean Angel. First appearing in Pathfinder RPG Bestiary 5 and coming in at a whopping CR 20, this Large rare figure is sure to awe all who see it when it appears on the battlefield.

No celestial force is more interested in the outcome of the long war with the Whispering Tyrant than the goddess, Iomedae, who was herself a knight of Ozem before ascending to godhood. The first of five gods making their Pathfinder Battles debut in this set, Iomedae, Goddess of Valor is a Medium rare figure, perfect for GMs running the Wrath of the Righteous Adventure Path or for players of paladins or clerics of the goddess who might attempt to emulate her appearance beyond simply wearing her holy symbol.

That's it for this preview, but it's far from the last you'll see of Lastwall. Check back next time for a look at the agents of undeath working to undermine the knights' efforts and spread their cold, evil will across the Inner Sea region.

Ugh, I JUST needed Iomedae last game session.

Still, awesome sculpt!

Very nice sculps. I look forward to this set.

Thanks for a 7 minis preview!

While i don't like the first three minis (i got enough humans) & the Angel (where are the three Angels from the Bestiary?), i like the wall & the last missing metallic dragon.
I'm kinda meh about Iomedae (looks like another human), but like that there will be four more deities in the set (one of them we know to be Pharasma & none of them being Caiden).

So far, i am not in for a case, but that may change with the preview of Thar-Baphon & his crew (hopefully a Mohrg & Shadow are among them).

I think I might need new glasses, but that doesn't QUITE look golden to me. The dragon I mean. The rest are pretty sweet. (Especially Iomedae.)

These are just the digital renders, which don't do metallic paint very well. The paint master we approved was pretty golden.

Mark, I think you need to do a little recounting:

Looks like three shelves and four corpses.

I will definitely need one or two of these.

Yeah, that's what I meant.

Fortunately my favorite mini out of these 7 is a common -- so I will be getting lots of the Lastwall Soldiers :)

I’m excited at the prospect of putting together a matching warband of crusaders. While we do have a lot of human figures, I always appreciate being able to sport forces that are easily identifiable as belonging to a specific faction. That way when there is a whole mess of humans on the table, it’s easy to figure out who are the good guys and bad guys.

I’m certainly intrigued about what kind of troops the Whispering Tyrant might employ, I imagine being a lich affords many options.

Great preview, I look forward to finding out more about this set in the coming weeks.

Off to a good start. I’m happy to get all of these, although it may well take me to my limit for knights and paladins.

I am definitely going to need to source a couple of copies of the dressing piece, this is something I could see me using a lot.

The gold dragon is an awesome representation, looks our it may be balanced well. Not sure about the uncommon rarity, do I need 3-4of them? Could be good repaint fodder though.

The angel is a 100% success in my eyes. Since I first saw the art inB5 I have wanted to see this mini produced. Of the final is anything like the render I’m going to be an extremely happy man. I may even hunt down a second or third.

If this is the good guy preview I can not wait to see the undead in this set. Now I just need to wait and see the final minis in hand, that’s the tell, Kingmaker had some amazing minis but the final production was a bit all over - I’m looking at you devourer.

Have they announced the cool bonus figure for this set? Its the only thing I buy from each of these sets now

It's the Cemetery of the Fallen premium set

You can see the anouncement and some images in this old blog

I don't see what the models look like is it another set piece like the bar and the thrown?

Yes, the Cemetery of the Fallen set contains a mausoleum with removable roof and interior coffin, some raised tombs, gravestones, and a cemetery gate and fence. I'll be showing off more of those in the coming weeks as well.

Mark, thanks for the preview. I think they look good and while I usualy don't want more humans, I exclude those who work well in units like those as they are always usefull in large number. Bonus point they will match with the other Iomedean (sp?) knight/soldiers from previous sets. Will we have an unmounted version of the general? It's great, when use for a PC, to have both versions of the same figure for mounted/unmounted use.

I realy like the empyrean angel and I can't wait to see how it will turn in real.

Looking foward for the remaining of the set lineup, it's a good start!

I on the other hand don’t mind a variety of humans. They tend to sick around longer used as NPCs or even PCs

look alike „five minutes on the gaming table“ monsters and do-overs are my pet peeve.
and while the manticore of this set looks good, the H&M manticore is still (or again) in stock at paizo.

Slight correction to the gallery, Kor. The crypt wall is a piece of dungeon dressing, not part of the Cemetery of the Fallen premium set.

Great preview! I'm hoping the secondary market price on the crypt wall won't be prohibitive; I'd like four of them. I've got conversion plans for Iomedae and the Lastwall Paladin. I plan to replace Iomedae's sword with a mace and remove the paladin's banner and replace it with a shield from one of the Lastwall soldiers.

The crypt looks amazing!

Dungeon dressing wasn't something I'd have asked for or thought I needed but since they've been introduced I've gotten a lot of use out of them.

I was hoping that the roof would be removable, but what has me even more excited is your revelation of the gate and fence!

Can you share how many pieces the fence has and how long and high they are?

I am now planning on ordering two incentives to build a bigger cemetary with two gates, but i wonder how long of a fence i will be able to build. ;-)
Thanks again, Mark! :-)

This set is awesome, definitely bringing me back to PF Battles mins. I'm probably going to purchase at least two cases just based off of the reveals so far.

While I'm glad we got a Large Gold Dragon I'm still very much hoping we get a Huge-sized or even Gargantuan-sized sized series of Metallic Dragons.

I was always a big fan of the evolution sets, I’d have been all in for mettalics as well as finishing out the base chromatics.

I think I quoted too much, but Kor, another error in the gallery is the gold dragon is weirdly an uncommon.

It's probably a safe bet that the third goddess after
-Iomedae &
-Pharasma is
-Urgathoa.

That leaves two deities to go.

We already had Caiden & Lamashtu in previous sets.

Which ones do you think will be in this set?

I think we can rule out Rovagug as he's too big.

I also think it will be "core deities", which leaves 14 possibilities.

Gorum & Nethys?

Dark Archive

Minis that absolutely need to be done in the last Pathfinder 1.0 set (for me, obviously):

-Astral Deva
-Boar
-Cat (none in ppm)
-Drider (male more than female, because of Pathfinder's unique design)
-Drow (none in over 5 years)
-Kyton/Velstrac
-Merfolk (none in ppm)
-Mohrg (none in ppm)
-Pony (none in ppm)
-Shadow (quasi-two-dimensional)
-Shocker Lizard (none in ppm)
-Vargouille
-Wolverine (none in ppm)

-Aboleth (the most wanted missing mini for me) is not possible anymore, but i hope that it will still be done in huge size in the Pathfinder Battles line, as DnD 5e changed it to large size.

Which creatures do you want to be made into Pathfinder Battles miniatures?

I‘d take those of your list any day

My players can't find hardly any suitable minis if they want to play these races: catfolk, ifrit, kitsune, oread, sylph, and undine.

I mentioned this years ago when wish lists were brought up and it never happened and I'm guessing never will anymore unfortunately.

Yeah, i really don't understand that we get one human mini after the other, when very basic monsters & humanoid races which are very popular among players haven't been represented at all.

Basically half of the "featured races" & none of the "uncommon races" (with the exception of one Strix) from the "Advanced Race Guide" have been done as minis.

Even well done minis like "Iomedae" above fail to excite me, as i have maybe five that look similiar enough to proxy.

I really wish that the first Pathfinder 2.0 minis set (when we hopefully get it) will do a better job of representing the different races.

On the positive side: I like the fact, that the "Pathfinder Iconic Heroes Evolved" set scheduled for may 2019, features Fumbus the Goblin Alchemist, Kyra the human cleric, Valeros the human fighter, Harsk the dwarf ranger, Merisiel the elf rogue & Seoni the human sorcerer.

I hope we'll also get a second set featuring the other six iconics.

Dark Archive

With the Paizo crew taking a well deserved rest today, i hope we'll get another minis blog this week. ;-)

The resolution of the render pictures above is not the best available, i imagine due to technical restrictions.

Here is a link to all seven renders in a higher resolution:

minisgallery.com

We also have booster box art for Icons of the Realms set #11 & an actual picture of the case incentive, i'll make a seperate thread in miniatures.
