I am getting so confused over the rules on this, for some reason it won't click. For this ranger, I have STR 17, DEX 19 and BAB of 1. He has a shortbow (not composite). Can y'all just tell me what his weapon layout would be?
ATTACK BONUS = ? + ? (if anything and where it came from)
DAMAGE: = ? + ? (if anything and where it came from)
And what/which applies to what/which? Just give me a rundown of what I'm adding to which rolls without telling me what it says in the core rulebook (right in front of me and just not clicking, like I said, because of how it's worded).
Like...
1. I roll for attack... what do I add to my d20 roll?
2. On a successful hit, I roll for damage... what do I add to my d6 roll?
Sorry if I sound blunt, sometimes I am just so frustrated with how the rules are worded in the book and when I look on other Pathfinder sites they just quote the book and it still doesn't make sense!

You would add the BAB to the Dex modifier for the attack, in this case +1 + +4, for an attack of d20+5.
The damage would be a straight d6, as non composite bows do not add Str modifiers.
None of this takes into account any enchantment the bow may have or any feats the character has, which can both modify the attack and damage rolls.

Attack roll: BAB + Dex mod + size mod + range penalty
For a Medium archer with the stats you gave, it'd be
1 + 4 + 0 + 0 = 5 against a target 60' away or nearer.
1 + 4 + 0 - 1 = 4 against a target 120' away or nearer (but more than 60')
and so on. If the archer (and thus the bow) is Small, it's
1 + 4 + 1 + 0 = 6 against a target 60' away or nearer
etc.
Damage: Under the weapons table it lists 1d6 as the damage for a Medium short bow. If the archer/bow is Small, it's 1d4.
That's pretty much it. Special abilities and magic bows/arrows can modify this further, but those are the basics.
So, attacking? Roll 1d20 + 5. If it hits the target's AC, roll 1d6 damage. Done.

Mostly correct except for one small thing, the bolded line should be:
1 + 4 + 0 - 2 = 3 against a target 120' away or nearer (but more than 60')He didn't mention having far shot or anything else that cut the range penalties in half, and the normal ranged increment penalty is a -2.

Oops, you're absolutely right. (I always forget that one!)
