A Haughty Horse and Some Funky Furniture

It's the end of another exciting week here at Paizo Inc., and what better way to celebrate than by revealing a few new miniatures from November's Deadly Foes set of Pathfinder Battles prepainted plastic miniatures! Time is short today, so I'm going to jump right into it with four exciting new reveals!

Everybody loves a good Unicorn, and I think WizKids has done a great job with this one. Use it to represent a paladin's mount, a fun forest encounter, or as a captive in need of rescue. It's a Unicorn. The Unicorn is a Large, uncommon figure.

Speaking of captives, why not use this Cage to imprison your player characters? With a lid that removes from the flat base, you actually can fit miniatures inside this simple metal Cage for an encounter they won't soon forget. As dungeon dressing, the Cage will appear about once per case, in place of an Uncommon figure.

Speaking of cool dungeon dressing, check out this spooky Candelabra! The Candelabra is also randomly inserted, about one per case.

There are a lot of devils and devil-aligned critters in Deadly Foes, and they've got to have come from somewhere. Watch your players eyes go wide with fear when you place the Hellgate upon the table. The gate probably leads to the home plane of devils, but you can really use it for just about any kind of evil-aligned magical portal. Your secret is safe with me. I (probably) won't tell Asmodeus. Again, as a bit of dungeon dressing, the Hellgate should appear once per case.

And that's it for this week's short-and-sweet preview. We'll see you next week, for what I believe will be the final four figures of the set!

Until then, I remain...

Finally, a decent Unicorn!

The Candelabra needs to be much more than one per case. :(

I'm glad to see we can expect a couple of Cages, though.

All three dungeon dressings are a hit with me.

Silver Crusade Contributor

Awesome! ^_^

I hope we get a promo Candelabra at some point, though - it's not exactly a one-off.

This is where those of us that want dungeon dressing are at odds with those that don't. We need to find a way to connect, for trades. Turn those pesky poeces of furniture into something more to your liking! I'm game if anyone wants to unload their unwanted dungeon dressings!

Dark Archive

Unfortunately guys it says the cage replaces an uncommon piece and is one to a case.
Once again throwing support behind a set of dressing. As one cage and one candelabra are for the most point useless and secondary market prices stink.

Unicorn in good. Not something I use a lot but I appreciate its inclusion for others.
I'd like to reiterate the above. At one per case the cage and cadelabra aren't very useful, I personally would want 6+ of each. Hopefully one of these does become a repaint. In the past I have managed to get many of the dressings (bets, crates, braziers) as singles so I suspect/hope it will be the same here. Quite often these are the only thing I need outside of the cases I order. I'm firmly in the camp of those that love the inclusion of the dressing pieces.

So what's left? 2 dressing pieces, a large rare and a medium/small rare?

I'll do what I can on dungeon dressing repaints.

Your estimate is almost right. We've still got:

1 dungeon dressing
2 small/medium rares
1 large rare

I hope that last large is a bone devil!

Will we get to see actual production minis before the set releases (not paint masters)?

All of the dungeon dressing pieces are wonderful. However, I do think you have to look at their availability per case. It seems many are interested in these pieces so why not test a separate line of simple dungeon dressing pieces? That would allow persons that don't want them to ignore these item and ones that do getting the numbers they want instead of having to try and chase them for ridiculous prices on the aftermarket? I like the idea as a terrain collector, but the Pathfinder offer has not met my needs or interest. I think the idea is fantastic, but you have to rethink the sale strategy.

The unicorn is nice, but I have way to many already that my interest is very limited. I have yet to use any that I do have.

Dark Archive

-The Unicorn is satisfying, even though i like the thicker proportions of the "Deep Cuts" version better. This takes care of another missing Pathfinder Bestiary creature, cementing this set as the best yet in terms of "basic monsters" numbers.

-The Cage doesn´t look like it can contain every medium or small mini, depending on how tall it is, what weapon it holds, or if it has wings etc. going over the base. Yet most PCs or NPCs should fit in.
It would have been better in large instead of medium and even though it is useful at one per case, more would have been better.

-The Candelabra replacing an uncommon mini is a little bothersome.
One of it is absolutely useless, excluding the most special of encounters.
I´d rather have any other uncommon mini instead.
Still, a repaint for this piece would be useful to people that buy from Paizo directly. Better yet, make four of it part of a multi-pack together with tables, chairs and stuff.

-The Hellgate is ok, rarity-wise - one of it should suffice for most purposes. I don´t like the clear plastic effect for some reason (even if it won´t look the same from both sides as shown in the render, but reversed). Without the clear plastic i would find it more useful, as it could be used as an actual doorway, but still it´s ok.

Dressing pieces are bothering me more and more, they are cool if it is a unique item like the Anghazan Idol, Iron Maiden, Sarcophagus, Book of the Damned or Hellgate, ok if rarely appearing like the Bubbling Cauldron, Bed, Arcane Pillar or Cage but absolutely obsolete if so common that one by itself is useless, like the candelabra, crate, barrel, table, burning brazier or chest.

Unique or rare items (one or two per room needed) should continue to appear in blind boxes, but please: no more common pieces, they just make me sad because i would like to use them but can´t.

That said, Deadly Foes is my favorite set of all 11 so far and i´m really looking forward to next weeks minis reveal (hopefully) including:

-Aasimar Paladin (Aram Golden-Heart), medium rare
-Bone Devil, large rare
-Shensen, medium rare
-Crimson Throne, dressing rare

We still need an Astral Deva/Messanger Angel and Planetar in the next set.

I'm going to take that hope so referencing the bone devil! Yay for social media! Nah I understand you means production minis.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for a well designed set. the thought and attention is much appreciated. Thank you Erik

I'd rather it not be the bone devil. I want that at uncommon, I need a lot of them. :/

Loving this set. Have y'all ever considered creating lamassu or shedu miniatures? I don't know why but I've been feeling the need to create an adventure featuring one of these for my homebrew game.

Oh I agree but that would also mean waiting until next year! I just can't do that.

By the way Erik, any word on the future of the iconics? I want some occult iconics in a nice little box, maybe some mythic versions as well. How about it?

From what i heard:

Iconic Heroes 1 sold REALLY well and has since been reprinted.

Iconic Heroes 2 is almost sold out.

Iconic Heroes 3 is doing ok.

Sets 4-6 have been hurt by the delays (due to quality problems) and price increase and are not close to selling out soon.

So i guess we will see more boxed sets, but not anytime soon.
The Occult and Mythic Iconics don't have the recognition appeal that the others have, and even the Advanced Class Iconics have some problems.

I haven't yet seriously considered either of those, but will add them to the list of stuff to take a closer look at.

Marco knows a lot about Pathfinder Battles.

Sometimes more than I do.

But his knowledge is a bit shaky about this topic, I'm afraid. :)

Paizo Employee Publisher, Chief Creative Officer

I can confirm that we do not currently have plans for an Iconic Heroes set featuring the Mythic Adventures iconics.

Many of those will appear in WizKids's "Deep Cuts" unpainted figure line, however.

I also agree, finally a good unicorn - no gumball colors or MLP lookalikes.

I love, love, love the 3 dressing pieces. Especially love the cage, totally useful in so many ways. The Gate is also beautiful.

As far as mix and the way they are put into the sets, I am totally ok with it. For every person who wants 6, there is somebody who wants none. I am ok trading or using the secondary market to fill quantities. "Trying" a separate sale box of something, whether dressing or other, is risky and expensive and can doom a line if it doesn't sell well (I don't want that).

Keep up the good work, Erik!! We appreciate it.

Marco Massoudi wrote:

the chest is a mimic which hasn't moved yet.

Throw it in everytime there is a Poorly Locked Chest from level 1 and it may just come in as a surprise when you swap it out with the actual mimic mini.

The unicorn looks quite horsey, I might just de-horn one if I get more than 2 to have another horse

Do people want more horses?

I really liked the riding horse and draft horse in The Red Dragon Inn. But they covered most of my horse needs to the point I don't need a bunch more. If you were to go down the path of more beasts of burden, a Donkey or Camel might be a better choice.

When I first saw the Hellgate, I imagined it was a medium figure, sort of like the Arcane Portal from Lords of Madness. But, Then I realized that the Pathfinder approach to Dungeon Dressings does not require them to fit on any size base, and even the cage in this set is large enough to contain a typical medium figure. So, now I have no idea how large the Hellgate might actually be. Is it designed to be taller than the average medium mini?

We use the horses that came in the last set, but would also happily get medium sized ponies (mount for small PCs), or more chargers/destriers suitable such as knights or cavaliers would use (yes, I have Mounted Alain already).

Natural animal minis are useful in a variety of campaigns. I also have the fox, owl, raven some guard dogs, a goat, and squealy nord. Just throw in an aurochs and I can start PathFarmer Chronicles :)

I have all six Iconic Heroes sets (with no quality problems on any) and would happily snap up a #7 that includes the missing Occult Iconics (plus vigilante).

I will obtain multiples of all the dressings even if through the secondary market. But I am discouraged by nasty posts on here about them. Seriously, I could go the rest of my life without seeing another demon or devil mini but I don't come on here and trash other people's favorite types of figure.

I second whoever suggested dressing minis meant to be fit around other figures, such as circles of flame or other magical effects. Reminds of the the classic mini of a gelatinous cube that you could put a figure inside, a hit with every party that's seen it.

I definitely do NOT need anymore horses. Mounted characters would be fine though.

If possible I'd prefer them to come in mounted/non mounted in the same set though. So a mounted combat character has both.

If you guys get tired of specifically dungeon dressing, spell effects would be god. I get a lot of mileage out of my living flaming sphere DDM mini.

A spectral hand or spiritual weapon mini would be great.

Hellgate is large enough for a Medium figure to walk through. It, the Arcane Pillar from last week, and the Cage, are all about the same height, which translates to about 11 feet tall. Most Medium figures are about 6 feet tall.

Here are the horse-like things I can see us doing, not including actual monsters like nightmares and pegasi and stuff, which is obvious and which we'll get to eventually.

Horse with saddle
Armored warhorse
Donkey laden with gear

That might be it. Am I missing anything?

I would be interested in each of these. Realistically, I'd only be interested in multiples of the donkey.

That seems pretty thorough Erik.

I'd get the most use out of the Donkey laden with gear personally.

If you need more dressing type ideas, a campsite set might be good.

maybe 2 tents in a case, 1 camp fire (or two, I could see that being a 2 per case too)

Erik Mona wrote:

I really would like to see a couple good warhorse minis. A lightly armored (leather) and a heavily armored (plate) warhorse would be great (especially the plate). And since we are talking about wish list here... also a medium armored warhorse (chain).

Although I stocked up on WotC's riding horse (horse with a saddle), having a more recent one would be helpful and likely in demand.

As for the candelabra -- please make this available as a promo -- if you thought the brazier was in great demand -- just wait until you see the demand for the candelabra.

I've been trying to convince WizKids to do a campsite for years.

And they are finally doing one, only for that "other" brand. Victory, I guess? ;)

Anyway, all that means is that we had to try even harder to make the next set's dressing-heavy case incentive even more impressive! :)

But I'm getting ahead of myself, as usual. :)

Not that it'd be super affordable, but I can't stomach that "other brand" minis line.

That paint jobs are atrocious from every since one I've seen. Shame, because I'd have loved to have some pixies but the ones they made are....not good. So I don't have much confidence in them to do a good job :/

I don't know if it's you single handedly vetoing bad sculpts/paint apps, but thanks for any part you play in keep the quality up. If the pathfinder line looked like the D&D line I'd have bailed out long, long ago.

Erik, i think you're great.
Sorry if i sometimes come over as Mr. know-it-all, you certainly know more about PFB than i do. ;-)

My preference:

#1 A donkey with gear,
#2 Heavy-armored warhorse,
#3 Horse with saddle.

Are a medium-sized pony (Bestiary 1) and a camel out of question?
As far as i know they have never been made in PPM.

What i really loved, was the Orc Rider on Dire Wolf (RD #44), because you can easily remove the rider by wiggeling him, he stands upright on his legs and you can reattach him to the knob on the wolf - i did that a dozen times and it still works!

Go ahead and try it please, it's a lot of fun and the utility of 2 minis in one is awesome.
If that could be done with a guy in full plate it would rock.

Those are all good options, but flip the order for my preference. The Desert of Desolation Warhorse kind of fills the role of the Horse with Saddle, but I'm sure many people don't have that mini.

You could do the Half-Celestial Unicorn (Bestiary page 169) with detachable horn and wings, that way we would get 4 minis in one:

-Horse
-Unicorn
-Pegasus
-Half-Celestial Unicorn

The place where the wings would be placed could be replaced with a saddle piece and voila: horse with saddle. ;-)

Not really needing anymore horses, but as for riding beats a pony, mule and camel would be cool.

Erik Mona wrote:

A fully-laden pack animal would be useful, whether horse, donkey, or whatever. A pony could be useful too. But there are appropriately sized kids' plastic horses out there for straight-up horses.

And of course we could always find lots of uses for ponies since friendship is, after all, magic.

We've got one Alain (Iconic Chavalier) on horse and two Alain (Iconic Chavalier) off horse.

and even though it's yet another white horse, Alains Iconic Mount (with the exact armor of the Alain with mount mini) would be quite cool to complete the set.

also what he said

only with the pony as #3 for priority

Erik can we get a miniature of the Athach Qupenarth from the ice tomb of the giant queen. Awesome art that would make a magnificent miniature, huge though. Although in light of the "other groups" success with these, well, who knows....

Yes to riding horse with saddle.
Yes to armored warhorse.
Yes to pack mule or donkey.
Yes to pony or donkey with saddle for small characters.

Yes to multiples of common dumgeon dressing (candelabra, barrels, crates, tables, statues, small fires, bedrolls, etc)

Even though I've been collecting since forever, still don't have enough of these commonly needed items.

No to unicorns, dragons, manicures, chimeras, and other 'prestige' critters that are rarely encountered but have been produced in plastic many times.
