Faith and the Sword—New Class Decks Headed Your Way!

Tuesday, June 30, 2015

Greetings, Pathfinders.

We've got an exciting new announcement for you this week, but first, I want to talk about the characters from the new August release, the Paladin Class Deck. Meet the band:

First up is Koren. When the design team started kicking around paladin character concepts, I immediately pitched the idea for a self-sacrificing martyrish fellow, one who's always saving other people at cost to himself. Because the design team has a... quirky... sense of humor, Koren quickly morphed into a self-hating half-orc who follows Sarenrae. He's all about saving people from themselves. His roles allow him to branch out into undead slaying or to stick with his team. (Fun Fact: that last one, the Unflagging Companion role, was originally called Creepy Stalker. Editorial is so mean.)

Next we have my personal favorite, Raz the gnome. She's definitely a cavalier-like take on the paladin. She's inspired by a perennial RPG character of mine: a halfling paladin dog rider. Conveniently, I talk about her a bit on this podcast. From Raz's token card:

“Raz is the only gnome paladin she's ever met. Therefore, she's clearly the best gnome paladin there ever was. At an early age, Raz decided she wanted to be different from her mischievous kin. She did so by kicking bad guy butt and protecting the good guys.”

That tells you most of what you need to know. She's got a role devoted to helping people get stuff, and she's got a role named Dog Rider Knight. I'm not going to tell you what to do or anything, but Dog. Rider. Knight.

Last but certainly not least, we've got a fresh new take on the iconic paladin Seelah. This Iomedae-following sword-wielding lover of good and righteousness shows off her "lay on hands" ability in the Paladin Class Deck. For the uninitiated, Lay On Hands is a classic paladin ability—the paladin calls forth divine aid to heal someone with a mere touch, faith healer-style. In fact, Faith Healer is one of her roles, good for those who like supportive paladin builds. Unlike Raz, Seelah has no interest in loot, so she tends to ignore it in her endless search for justice.

You may have noticed that this deck features only three characters rather than the four featured in each of the first seven class decks. That's a change that you'll see going forward in the rest of the Class Deck line. Based on extensive player feedback, we've increased the number of boons in the deck. Each character can now get a greater range of worthwhile options to choose from while progressing through an adventure path. We think you'll be pleased with the results while still appreciating the variety of innovative characters that we present in these products.

Oh, and that news I foreshadowed so subtly earlier? CLASS DECK SUBSCRIPTIONS, Y'ALL. They're starting with the August release of the Paladin Class Deck. Check the details:

With your ongoing Pathfinder Adventure Card Game Class Deck subscription, we'll automatically send you each new Pathfinder Adventure Card Game Class Deck, charging your credit card automatically as we ship each product. You only need to sign up once, so you'll never need to worry about renewal notices or missed products! Best of all, each subscription shipment will give you a discount of 20% off the MSRP of that release. Items from your Class Deck subscription will be combined with your other Paizo subscriptions (including your Adventure Card Game subscription) to save money on shipping.

When you start an ongoing subscription, any existing preorders for products covered by your subscription are automatically cancelled (or if you've preordered more than one of an item, they'll have their quantity reduced by one). If you've already preordered any of the upcoming decks, you do not need to do anything special when you subscribe.

Exciting, right? Next week, you'll learn what the real Best Character Ever is, because I'm taking my turn at the helm.

Until next time, Pathfinders.

I don't think that's correct. As I recall, only the Owner can treat it as Basic; other characters of the same class treat it as a 'B' card (and therefore an easy upgrade).

Thanks for fast response.

You're correct—I misspoke. For reference, the actual rules:

Each Adventure Card Guild character’s Class Deck may contain exactly one copy of each of its class’s Owner-associated promo card from the Iconic Heroes product line, indicated with a “Iconic Heroes” banner in the top left and a set indicator of P in the top right.
For example, Agna may add one copy of the Teapot and one copy of Biter to her Ranger Class Deck, because those cards have Harsk listed as their Owner, and Harsk is in the Ranger Class Deck. Agna may not have any other promo cards in her Class Deck. She may select the Teapot as an item deck upgrade when she gets one. Harsk, as per the Owner rules in the rulebook, can select the Teapot as part of his starting deck. Promo cards may be added to a Class Deck box at the start of a scenario.

Still, that house rule wouldn't cause any problems.

Vic says no promos.

To add to what Vic said above (especially "It won't cause any problems at home"), I'll say this: the Iconic Heroes promo cards are meant to represent things that are important to that specific character (while still being playable cards for anyone who gets them). I mean, sure, Enora could wear a Splendiferous Hat, but it's Balazar's Hat, so it's not like it's the sort of thing that she should start with (i.e. it wouldn't be Basic her her).

Just my contractually obligated post to marvel at the fact that I got to make Balazar's hat. As an ally.

I still call shenanigans on that one. Any hat that is alive enough to not be an item can't be good

Not even The Sorting Hat? (Harry Potter)

If I remember correctly, on multiple occasions people found an all powerful sword inside that hat.

How do we know that hat wasn't planning on murdering everyone at the school with it?

The flavor text says that Balazar talks to his hat; it doesn't tell us whether the hat talks back. And if Sweet Dragon Costume has the Dragon trait solely because its wearer believes it does, who's to say exactly what's going on here?

Sovereign Court

So Balazar might be better suited in an asylum than adventuring across the world? Good to know, don't trust him!

Taratata! I KNOW it's a real dragon even if the wearer is Ranzak and not me. It has nothing to do with belief. It's plain truth. Follow my lead and run when you see it coming. And try to keep up cause I'm wearing my REAL Jaberwocky Rabbit boots.

I gotta come back to this and ask, is the artwork for Raz new, or has it, been used before, like most class deck character artwork?

Who was the UNLUCKY fourth hero in the paladin band??? :-)))

Grand Lodge

Rudolph. They never let him play.

-—

Since this class deck was probably playtested, any playtester is under an NDA and not allowed to disclose that info. I think you'd have to get an answer from either Tanis, Vic and/or Mike.

Rudolph, the red-nose rendeer was a Paladin, really?

Come on!

Try asking again next time Mike has been locked in the cupboard whilst someone writes a blog.

I suspect it was Ranzak - the next chapter on his path to redemption. Maybe that was just a stretch too far for some...

Adventure Card Game Designer

Sorry, not revealing that. Playtest data is sacred.

Seriously Mike, do you really beleive we will buy that it was banished because of playtesting?
We know you better, you evil mastermind... ;-)

It was Ekkie, she just wanted some pals a' din(ner), but silly longshanks kept going on and on about codes and boring stuff, plus one of them was even riding a dog! Ekkie knows no trust dogs, silly Raz probably get eaten soon.

Come on, Mike ... You already revealed who is the fourth!

I downloaded the picture of the game box when it was revealed - there are 4 character pictures on that. I could identify 3 of them with the above introduced characters, one character pic remains unidentified as I dont have the corresponding rPG advanced class book. Just look the charcter pic up and @woosh@ you know who it is...

I dont get that something that was already revealed becomes suddenly sacred?
Or is PACG a religion? That gives me some sour feeling in my stomach ... *need milk to compensate*

Are we a smart or dumb gaming community?

The 4 character artwork was not final and did not represent what would be in the box (other than Seelah). Note that the Oracle box art currently has Damiel as one of the portraits and he definitely will not be in that box.

Sir Lance-a-loot of Came-a-loot....

Badgering him isn't going to get you what you want. He said he's not going to do it.

Besides, it's [REDACTED].

So, about that Raz artwork...?

Glad they went to three then. No-one would like that character anyways. I mean, being able to [REDACTED]? That's just bad.

Yeah, [REDACTED] was a bit odd, but I will miss the ability to [REDACTED], that was fun. Hopefully they managed to incorporate it into another character instead.

Sovereign Court

I could see them giving it to [REDACTED] from the Barbarian deck, it'd combo well with [REDACTED]

I think it was Merisiel. There isn't enough Merisiel so she showed up as a Pally.

^ I'm on board.

But I don't think [REDACTED]'s in that deck anymore, so they'd have to put it back in. Maybe [REDACTED]?

Please define [REDACTED] more precisely...

Why was the poor guy fired?

It would have been his lifetime appearance!

Sovereign Court

He murdered someone in cold blood and refused to atone.

Grand Lodge

Then he told Iomedae to "S*ck it!"

It wasn't pretty.

ps-On the road to GenCon! Weeeee

He pissed off the playtesters by trying to get 269 times all the past and future promo cards delivered by Hawks for free in Germany without saying please ?
I guess that's enough to lose paladinhood...

Andrew L Klein wrote:

He will however be re-appearing in the future as the Iconic Anti-Paladin?

Yes.
